Video: Clipping Your Nails On The Subway Is Gross

_Video: Clipping Your Nails On The Subway Is Gross
We thought we already had this covered: nail clipping on the subway is not cool, under any circumstances. As it is, we think even nail filing is on the edge of acceptability. But clipping? Between the nails-on-chalk sound and the discarded bits that fly all over the place, it is absurd that we're even having this conversation. And this assumes that we're only talking about fingernails! And yet, in the video below, a man is called a "mental case" for pointing out to a stranger that it's "kinda gross" that he was clipping his nails on the subway. [MORE]

Woman Accused Of Raping 13-Year-Old Boy Says Kid Is Lying

The attorney for a young woman on Staten Island accused of rape insists that her alleged 13-year-old victim is lying. Megan Donovan, a 20-year-old day care worker, was swiftly arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly having sex with an unidentified 13-year-old the night before. Sources tell the Staten Island Advance that Donovan knew the boy's sister, and that the two had "struck up a romance" that was consensually consummated Tuesday night at the boy's home, while his mother was out. His mom, as it happens, was indicted for perjury last year for allegedly lying to help a man accused of rape.... [ MORE ]

Video: Woman Shows Off 90-Square-Foot Apartment

The below video is making the rounds today (and, no, it's not an April Fool's joke), which shows a woman giving a tour of her studio apartment... all 90-square-feet of it. That's smaller than the previously proclaimed smallest apartment in New York! Felice Cohen (who we mentioned a year before this video was made—so she's been in there for quite some time!), has traded in not having a kitchen for being one block from Central Park, and having other city luxuries that are right outside her front door. Take a look at what $700 will get you on the Upper West Side:... [ MORE ]

11-Year-Old Boy Accused Of Hate Crime Gives Press The Finger

11-year-old Osman Daramy, a Staten Island sixth-grader who faces felony hate crime charges for assaulting a Muslim classmate, appeared in Family Court yesterday in the Bronx. Previously, the Post ran a sad photo of Daramy getting marched out of school in handcuffs and ankle shackles, and today the tabloid follows up with a photo of Daramy defiantly flipping off the tabloid's photographer. We realize Daramy—who was born in a refugee camp Sierra Leone—has his problems, but we've got to give the kid credit for giving the Post the salute it deserves. ... [ MORE ]

Not Sbarro! Ubiquitous Pizza Chain Prepares For Bankruptcy

Sbarro, arguably the king of mall food court pizza (and Michael Scott's favorite pizza), is getting ready to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as soon as Monday, the Journal reports. The chain, which originally started in Brooklyn (really!), has been struggling amidst the down economy with roughly $365 million in debt.... [ MORE ]

Angry Adult Storms School Bus, Beats Bronx Boy

Last Friday morning one Bronx man had enough with those pesky kids leaning out of their fancy school buses and taunting him and his niece. So naturally he stormed up to the back of one of those offending vehicles—a bus for special needs kids—opened the unlocked emergency exit, climbed aboard and started beating on 11-year-old Jameel Grant.... Wiccan Claims She Was Target Of TSA Witch Hunt

A former TSA agent says that she was fired from her job touching people's junk in airports because of her Wiccan beliefs. Carole Smith says that a coworker complained that she had cast a disabling spell on the heater of her car one snowy evening. When her boss confronted her about the allegations, she said: “I was dumbfounded. I told him, that's not what Wicca is. We don't cast spells. That's not witchcraft. That's black magic or voodoo or something else. To put a spell on a heater of a car, if I had that kind of power, I wouldn't be working for TSA. I would go buy lottery tickets and put a spell on the balls.”... [ MORE ]

Tiger Mom's Job Is Half-Done: Eldest Cub Is Harvard-Bound

In January, an excerpt of Amy Chua's parenting memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, led to an intense debate about, well, the intense techniques Chua said she used with her two daughters in order to ensure their academic and musical success (no-holds-barred shaming! no sleepovers! hours of hours of practice!). And Chua, who was simultaneously pilloried and celebrated, defended herself everywhere, even The Colbert Report, but her latest crowning achievement may be this: Her 18-year-old daughter Sophia's acceptance to Harvard. ...
