[UPDATED BELOW] Last night one part of the Williamsburg community rose up against another, possibly more "social" part of the Williamsburg community. This all went down at the CB1 meeting, where much of the night was spent discussing that proposed moratorium on all new liquor licenses in the area (more on that later). The shocker came at the end of the meeting, however, when community board members voted unanimously to ban all concerts from the Williamsburg Waterfront! [ MORE] | Who ever through J. Crew would end up in the culture wars? But now the fashion company's president and creative director Jenna Lyons is getting the once-over from conservatives, led by psychologist Dr. Keith Ablow, who freaked out over the latest Jenna's Picks e-mailing from J. Crew, where Lyons has a cute picture of Lyons and her son Beckett and the caption "Quality Time. ‘Lucky for me, I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.’" Ablow frowns in his FoxNews.com Health column, "Yeah, well, it may be fun and games now, Jenna, but at least put some money aside for psychotherapy for the kid—and maybe a little for others who’ll be affected by your 'innocent' pleasure." ... You can't see any rats in this photo of trash on the 6 train, but the News headline says they're in there, and do you really want to root around and find out? Also unsettling is the color of the bags, which evokes those medical waste biohazard bags. An anonymous MTA worker tells the tabloid:... Barrera's father, who convinced him to turn himself in, gave his sympathy to the Coit family and spoke about his son: "He's a good person. I'm sure it was the passion in the moment...If I could see [the Coit's] in person, I'd tell them my heart goes out to them," Raul Barrera Sr. told the Post.... In their annual State of New York report, NYU's Furman Center examined census data to determine that only 0.6 percent of New Yorkers use bikes as their preferred mode of transportation [pdf]. This flies in the face of DOT numbers that show the number of cyclists doubling over the past four years [pdf]. It also flies in the face of what we see with our eyes when we're riding all over NYC, from South Brooklyn to Washington Heights. So what the deuce is going on here? ... [ MORE ] | | In court yesterday, the jury heard an audio recording of a 911 call made on the night an unidentified woman was allegedly raped by an NYPD officer as his partner acted as a lookout. Prosecutors have strongly implied that Officer Kenneth Moreno made the call himself in order to justify returning to the victim's apartment and buy time; on the tape, a man who identifies himself as a Canadian named John Edwards tells a 911 operator there is a homeless man sleeping in his lobby, and he wants police to clear him out. But in describing the man—whom prosecutors believe didn't exist—"Edwards" uses vernacular that may have outed himself as a cop. See if you can catch it:...
