_Shutdown Looms As GOP "Courageously" Pushes Nauseating Budget
House Speaker John Boehner emerged from a closed-door budget meeting with President Obama yesterday and announced that no deal had been reached, increasingly the likelihood of a government shutdown. House Republicans say they are open to approving another one-week stop-gap budget extension, but Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, also told the Times, "The White House has increased the likelihood of a shut down." The impasse comes as the House Budget Committee chairman, Republican Paul Ryan, released the proposed Republican budget, which cuddly conservative columnist David Brooks hails as "courageous" and "serious." So you know it must be really messed up. [MORE]

Councilman: Ban Embarrassing Parking Violation Stickers

Ever come down five minutes too late to move your car for alternate side parking only to find the Sanitation Department has slapped on one of those stickers that's totally impossible to get off without leaving scratch marks and a sticky residue on your window? Councilman David Greenfield hates that too, so tomorrow he's planning on introducing legislation to ban the stickers, saying fines are plenty for parking scofflaws. He asked the Daily News, "It's a pretty punitive form of punishment. I mean, what's next? We're going to start slashing people's tires when they don't park on the correct side?" ... [ MORE ]

Cop Didn't Rape Woman, Merely "Succumbed To Physical Contact," Lawyer Argues

Officer Kenneth Moreno has his work cut out for him beating charges that he raped a drunk woman in her East Village apartment after helping her into her apartment. The alleged victim later recorded a confrontation with Moreno, and though he denied raping her when she was passed out in December 2008, he allegedly told her he used a condom when she threatened to make a scene. But as Moreno's trial (and the trial of his partner, three-year-vet Officer Franklin Mata) kicked off yesterday, his lawyer insisted it was all a big misunderstanding.... [ MORE ]

Giuliani Calls WTC Building 7 Questioner A "Conspiracy Nut"

After listening to Rudy Giuliani talk for ninety minutes at the University of Arkansas Sunday night, the former Mayor of 9/11 Town opened the floor to questions. And people were still awake to ask them! One woman, in particular, had some very urgent inquires about WTC Building 7, which was destroyed on 9/11. As you may recall from reading the 1,000-plus comments on this story, some people believe the building—where Giuliani had his emergency command center—did not collapse on its own, but instead had help from shadowy government operatives who brought it down in a controlled demolition. ... Restaurant Runs Out Of Fried Chicken, Chicken-Addict Attacks

One Brooklyn man proved the food addiction skeptics wrong when he demonstrated that the disease can produce the kind of violence and crime associated with drug and alcohol addictions. David Murray, 23, arrived at Crown Fried Chicken on Tompkins Avenue around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, needing his fried chicken breast fix. But when an employee told him they were out, he freaked out and attacked. ... [ MORE ]

Colin Quinn Trashes "New" Park Slope

Colin Quinn—who you most likely best know from MTV's Remote Controlrecently discussed his upbringing in... Park Slope. The old Park Slope. His home on 1st Street would probably look different if he revisited it now; he says back in the day the neighborhood was filled with places like Greasy Jack's (which has a whole Facebook thread in tribute to it), Cheap Andy's (two burgers for a quarter), Al's Toy Land and Danny's Candy Store. ... Flashback: McCarren Park Pool, 1937

It warmed up today (finally!) and while it's not quite time to take a dip outdoors, let's take a look back at McCarren Park Pool as we await its reopening (in the Spring of 2012, if we're to believe current scheduling plans). The pool first opened in 1936, amidst the Great Depression, and was one of ten pools in the city to be opened by Robert Moses and Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia under the WPA (Works Progress Administration) Program. They were meant to provide recreation and an escape from the economy at the time, but also to generate employment.... [ MORE ]

WalMart Really Wants You To Welcome Them In NYC

WalMart has been desperately trying to enter the New York City market for years, and has been on a new tear to gain community support (hey, they did hire Bloomberg's old campaign manager for their efforts!). The mega-corporation has just sent out a new flyer explaining why, if you are a New Yorker who wants his/her rights, you should support Walmart in the Big Apple!... [ MORE ]
