Mayor Bloomberg is no fan of guns, but two gun advocacy groups are accusing him of violating the Second Amendment by making guns cost prohibitive in this town. In a lawsuit filed against the city (below) the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association and the Second Amendment Foundation say that the $340 fee for issuance or renewal of a 3-year “Residence Premises” handgun license is "excessive and is not used to defray administrative costs, and hence, it impermissibly burdens the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms." But Bloomberg already said he'd fix everything! [ MORE] | On Monday, cyclist message boards lit up with outrage over the story of a woman who was arrested after supposedly running a red light on her bicycle on Amsterdam Avenue. But it turns out the truth is actually more outrageous: Chistina Thede, the cyclist in question, tells us she didn't run a red light at all. Her crime? Criticizing a plainclothes cop who nearly doored her. ... [ MORE ] | | Jury duty is a double-edged sword for most: the pleasure of participating in one of the core tenants of democracy is mixed with the reality of a tedious, long process with little pay. People literally have mental breakdowns over it! So many wear inappropriate t-shirts, or touch themselves, to escape it. And then other people try to get out of it by trashing the NYPD and minorities in the most offensive way possible. Hey, it's not like it could possibly blow up in your face, right?... [ MORE ] | | Let's be clear, it is still a crime to sleep with a minor while in a foreign country. For example: Bergen County police last night arrested two chaperones from the Paramus Catholic High School Belgium/Germany exchange program, 27-year-old Michael Sumulikoski and 31-year-old Artur Sopel, for allegedly engaging in "inappropriate sexual contact" with three female students on the ten-day February jaunt abroad. A fourth girl has also come forward to say she had sexual activities with Sopel last spring while she was a student at the school. Both men are faculty members, and alumni, of the Paramus Catholic High School.... The car careened off the bridge into the same group of stores. The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. and MyFoxNY reports, "The driver of a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta driving Queens-bound on the lower level of the Queensboro Bridge lost control and crashed into a building at Crescent Street and Queens Plaza."... [ MORE ] | | We've seen plenty of anecdotal evidence that the NYPD has a major hard-on for cyclists in Brooklyn these days, but now we have some actual stats, thanks to the Brooklyn Paper, which reports that cops' cycling crackdown resulted in nearly twice as many tickets in February than it did last February. Officers wrote at least 695 bicycle summonses throughout Brooklyn that month, compared to 375 in the same period last year. Naturally, cyclists are fuming.... [ MORE ] | | For his latest stunt, comedian Mark Malkoff—who previously lived in an IKEA and visited 171 Starbucks in one day—set out to prove the obvious: the crosstown bus lines can be agonizingly slow. So slow, in fact, that you're actually better off riding a child's big wheel tricycle. Riding a Razor Rip Rider 360, Malkoff raced the bus for a mile on 42nd Street, from 10th Avenue to Madison Avenue, being sure to pedal in traffic so as not to get a summons for triking on the sidewalk. Here is his triumphant video:... [ MORE ] | | The two Staten Island children facing felony hate crime charges aren't getting any special treatment because of their age. Daramy Osman, the 11-year-old boy who was the first to get collared, has been kept in a juvenile detention facility since last Wednesday. On Friday night, his alleged accomplice, 13-year-old Krista Callender, was also arrested, and although she was initially released into the custody of her mother, yesterday a judge decided the girl was too dangerous to be on the loose. "Based on [Callender's] history, I do believe she is capable of committing another crime," Judge Helene Sacco ruled in Staten Island Family Court yesterday.... [ MORE ] | | |
