Raul Barrera, the man who allegedly confessed to fatally stabbing his girlfriend in a Lower East Side apartment, was arraigned on second-degree murder charges, held without bail, and put on suicide watch yesterday. Barrera, 33, is accused of attacking Sarah Coit, 23, with a knife so brutally that her internal organs were showing by the time the police arrived to the apartment at 63 Clinton Street. But a woman who used to live next to the couple said, "I knew he was going to kill her...His eyes were insane. He was a killer." [MORE]

Hollywood doesn't always get the city's details down to perfection, and sometimes their portrayal is downright insulting. We're launching a new series to out the worst of the worst—so if you see something off on the big or small screen, say something. ... [ MORE ]
_Did Texas Pizza Joint Rip Off Brooklyn Brewery Logo?

Did Texas Pizza Joint Rip Off Brooklyn Brewery Logo?

[UPDATE BELOW] Sometimes a font is just a font. And sometimes it's copyright infringement. On their blog, Brooklyn Brewery is accusing Dallas pizza joint Eno's Pizza Tavern of ripping off their logo. They write, "It appears that Eno’s Pizza Tavern in Dallas, TX exhausted a great amount of energy and resources to develop an original logo for their business. Or perhaps they were drinking a bottle of Brooklyn beer and noticed that reflected in a mirror, a backwards B resembles an E? Either way, those smoke and mirrors don’t fool us!" And after flipping the Eno's logo around, we see their point!... [ MORE ]
_Big Bay Ridge Bike Lane Proposal Shot Down

Big Bay Ridge Bike Lane Proposal Shot Down

The DOT's proposal to install a 6.3 mile stretch of bike lane connecting Bay Ridge to Bensonhurst has been spiked, in no small part due to opposition from City Councilmember Domenic Recchia, whom you may recall for his cheerleading the evictions of the Coney Island Eight. The proposed bike lane [pdf] would have run along Bay Ridge Parkway from Shore Road to Bay Parkway, making it safer for cyclists throughout South Brooklyn to access the gorgeous Shore Road Greenway. But today the Post reports that Recchia put the brakes on the bike lane... for safety.... [ MORE ]

Japan Nuclear Crisis Now On Same Level As Chernobyl

The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan has raised the crisis level at the Fukushima Daiichi plant to level 7, which has only been applied to the nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl. Previously, Fukushima's ongoing crisis had been designated level 5—on par with the Three Mile Island accident in Pennsylvania in 1979. "This is an admission by the Japanese government that the amount of radiation released into the environment has reached a new order of magnitude," Tetsuo Iguchi, a quantum engineering professor at Nagoya University told the Times. ... Trump May Run As Independent In 2012, But For Now He's Critiquing Blogs

Donald "Worst Nightmare" Trump told the Wall Street Journal yesterday that he'd "probably" run as an independent if he doesn't get the nod from the GOP, declaring, “I hate what’s happening to the country." But, unlike Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney, Trump won't decide until this summer—see, even though he hates what's happening to this country, "I can’t run during the airing of [Celebrity Apprentice]. I’m not allowed to." Hmm, will the Republicans beg NBC to order another few seasons of the show to run back-to-back for a while?... [ MORE ]

Photo: Tractor-Trailer Stuck In Toll Booth After Dump Truck Rear-Ends It

No humans were injured in the making of this comical photo of a tractor trailer truck wedged in a toll booth on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The Staten Island Advance reports that the truck was hit from behind this morning by a Department of Transportation dump truck, causing "the larger vehicle to overturn and get stuck in a toll booth as it careened sideways through it." ...
