 | With just over an hour before the midnight deadline, Republicans and Democrats agreed on $38 billion in federal budget cuts to avert a government shutdown. President Obama acknowledged the cuts would hurt, but they were needed, "We protected the investments we need to win the future, adding, "The government will be open for business. Both parties reached an agreement that will allow our small businesses to get the loans they need, our families to get the mortgages they applied for, and hundreds of thousands of Americans to show up at work and take home their paychecks on time."... And according to some Californians, it's better than In-N-Out. One die hard In-N-Out fan recently made the switch, telling the LA Times, "We chose [Five Guys] over In-N-Out. It's the fourth time we've been here since they opened."... "It's unmanned and unpoliced...it's just a bad situation," said Robert Morris, executive vice president of the Port Authority PBA.... When last we saw Renato Seabra—the Portuguese male model accused of choking, stabbing, castrating with a corkscrew, ramming in the face with a computer monitor and stomping on the head of the gay Portuguese writer Carlos Castro in a Times Square Hotel room last January—his lawyer was mulling the possibility of dragging the case on with a psychiatric defense (while also trying to block prosecutors from using Seabra's confession). Today Seabra came back to court (this time ditching the orange jumper for a snazzy suit his mom bought him) and his lawyer told the judge that... they still haven't decided if they'll go the insanity route.... Because it's not just for banksters anymore, you know! And so, in an attempt to shed the neighborhood's reputation as an after-hours ghost town, they're trying to rebrand the area with a name that "embodies the new spirit and community": SoMa, for South Manhattan. So moronic, or so marvelous? Here's their pitch:... According to Newsday, Betty Bjorkman, 56, was hit with 103 counts of animal cruelty. Her lawyer said, "She was an animal lover. She cared for them. She always had the utmost respect for the animals and treated them properly," but a police detective said the apartment "needs to be condemned, gutted and started anew. Deplorable is the best word I can come up with."... [ MORE ] | | Last night Charlie Sheen made his triumphant return to New York City, where just six months ago he was reborn, naked and frothing at the mouth in the Plaza Hotel. Since that day, America has stood transfixed at the trainwreck, and Sheen has found a way to capitalize on his womanizing, domestic abuse issues, drug addiction, alcoholism, and what appears to be a deteriorating mental state. Last night we witnessed the man unravel even further, with our own eyes, at Radio City Music Hall... where he was allowed to smoke, inside, on stage. He told us the only way to get there was through practice (wrong venue buddy), and was under the impression he sold both nights in New York out (there were plenty of seats open, with more opening every minute). ...
