The innocent man who was wrongly imprisoned for nearly four years because of false rape charges is now suing the city for his ordeal. William McCaffery is seeking $20 million in compensatory damages, as well as another $10 million for what he calls "conduct...so outrageous as to exceed the bounds of all common and civilized decency." [ MORE] | Fox 5 is making a big stink about a nasty situation in the Herald Square subway station, where it appears that someone did a #2 and didn't flush... because there was no toilet available where the bowel movement occured. Apparently, it's been two weeks since the human waste first debuted on the landing of a stairwell, and although the MTA put up a yellow caution sign, it seems that no one bothered to clean up fecal remnants. Baby steps? Area man Paul Arking is sick of walking through the stench gauntlet during his daily commute, and this video shows he's not the only one. ... [ MORE ] | | "It's open night mic on bike lanes tonight," announced Community Board 6 Chairman Daniel Kummer at the start of last night's public hearing on the infamous Prospect Park West bike lane in Park Slope. (You may have read about it... in the UK's Guardian!) The two-and-a-half hour meeting, held in the muggy auditorium at John Jay High School, drew an overwhelming number of bike lane supporters. Out of an estimated 350 people in attendance, perhaps a dozen spoke against the bike lane through the course of the evening. Here's video of the most spirited bike lane boosters and detractors:... Peta2, PETA's youth division has held these debates at colleges all over the country, from the University of Texas (wonder how that went?) to Harvard and Princeton. The monthly pass costs him $334 (!) and should entitle him, as his lawyer puts it, to ride the LIRR as much as he wants during every day of a month. Sounds like a dream come true! But for four days from late December to early February, inclement weather shut down Stathakos's leg of the LIRR, and now he's suing the MTA to get a refund.... Up to 300 bodies have been found in the city of Sendai in northeastern Japan, which the LA Times reports is an area believed to have been hit hardest by a massive Tsunami that swept across the Pacific at 500 mph. A wave over 33 feet high hit the city of 1 million, which is without power. 1,100 people are estimated to be stranded at the airport. Below, via Media Memo, first-hand video of the earthquake rattling Tokyo, and aerial video of the tsunami sweeping up everything in its path:... Zhanna Smsarian, 16, was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court for pouring acid on 15-year-old Albina Eshimbaeva’s head during a class at Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge. And would you believe it: the attack was (at least partially) over an older man.... YouTube user MessiahSez is possessed of a deep, abiding hatred for bike lanes, which must make his marriage quite lively, since his wife happens to be "a very big environmentalist and bike lane advocate." Perhaps that's why he's so pissed off. In this video, he settles the great Prospect Park West bike lane debate once and for all with a decisive deployment of F-bombs. If you've got sensitive ears or workplace rules about vulgarities, it's time to put on the earmuffs:... [ MORE ] | | |
