Last month little Brianna Fischer of Cobble Hill was watching a television program in which children recited the Pledge of Allegiance in a classroom. What was this mysterious jingoistic incantation, Brianna asked her parents, who were shocked to learn that their 8-year-old daughter was not required to swear an oath to the flag every morning at PS 29. Empire State law requires students from Plattsburgh to Dunkirk to declare their allegiance daily, and so Brianna's parents marched right down to PS 29 to set that hippie principal straight. Residents were shaken and disgusted; one told NY1, "That's disgusting. I see it. It's a lynchman, a hangman's noose. I would never think that would happen in this neighborhood." ... And why shouldn't he, when he's already got Lewis Black and Rush Limbaugh on his side, and he's only the third least popular figure in NYC. But Trump made a dangerous move yesterday during a visit with the ladies of The View: he came out of the closet as a birther.... It’s the best gift from anyone." And he was happily surprised with the 38-12 City Council vote, "That’s better than what I thought would happen." But let's review some of the dissenting remarks from Council members like Peter Vallone (D-Queens) and Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn), who actually suggested Rikers Island be named after Koch.... The organization has petitioned the Committee on Bible Translation to suggest that its next translation remove "speciesist" language, by referring to animals as "he or she" instead of "it." “When the Bible moves toward inclusively in one area...it wasn’t much of a stretch to suggest they move toward inclusively in this area. Language matters. Calling an animal 'it' denies them something. They are beloved by God. They glorify God," Bruce Friedrich, PETA's vice president for policy, told CNN.... American Apparel CEO Dov Charney claims, via his lawyers, that 20-year-old Irene Morales was sending him naughty emails long before she filed a lawsuit against him for $260 million. According to the NY Post, Morales—who claims she was held as his sex slave—"appears more like a money-hungry vixen than a helpless victim" in the emails.... "We" sent a check out earlier this week by placing it in this mailbox on the corner of Water and Jay Streets in Brooklyn, as we have done in the past, but the NYC-based recipient has not yet received said check yet. Last night we checked the box on our way to the subway, recalling that it had seemed a bit full when we originally placed the check in, and lo and behold, it had envelopes bursting out of it. By this morning you couldn't even open the flap. A call to the Cadman Plaza Post Office (1.5 stars on Yelp!), which is responsible for the daily pick up at this box, garnered... no answer. A call to the USPS customer service got us a case opened, which we should be hearing about by... the middle of next week. And finally, we have reached out to two press contacts here in New York City, and one has contacted us and is looking into this mystery.... [ MORE ] | | |
