_NYPD Busts Massive 8,000 Plant Pot Farm

There must be a lot of pot farms sprinkled nearby New York! In the same month as police found a Staten Island grow house with 376 plants and a New Jersey man with 58 plants, the NYPD and the DEA have busted a pot farm spread in and around seven houses in Wurtsboro with roughly 8,000 marijuana plants. According to police, the crop is worth about $8 million on the street. Good thing we're the pot arrest capital of the world, eh? [MORE]

Police are searching for a group of thugs that beat up Damian Furtch, 26, at a West Village McDonald's on Sunday, leaving him with two black eyes and multiple stitches. Furtch posted photos of his injuries on Facebook, and wrote "I thought I was safe in the city I loved but apparently wearing fluorescent colored clothing and pink shoelaces really bother some f-----g a--holes to blind side me and hit me." Police are investigating the beating as a hate crime.... [ MORE ]

Video: Times Square Subway, 1986

We've looked back at Times Square in 1986 before, but that was above ground... what was happening underneath all the action? One tourist from the time just uploaded his 25 year old footage to YouTube, saying while on a visit he "was going in the underground at 43nd St & Times Square" to film. He recently "opened my archive once again with the original film and composed it with the original stereo sound to this over 10 minutes long 'directors cut' of all scenes I filmed at this day in June 1986. Enjoy it!"... [ MORE ]

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Deserves Better Publicity Stunts

Happy Global BDS Day of Action on Land Day! Today activists like the ones in this video will be calling for a boycott of Israel "until it respects the basic rights of Palestinians living under occupation, within Israel and in exile." Cringing already? Watch the video and get ready to change your name to Cringer Rogers:... [ MORE ]

"Deported" 4-Year-Old Is Back On American Soil

Emily Ruiz, the 4-year-old U.S. citizen who was sent back to Guatemala earlier this month, is back with her family on American soil. Her family's lawyer, David Sperling, even tweeted photos of the reunion with the caption "mission accomplished." Meanwhile, lawmakers and lawyers are still trying to figure out exactly how, in the words of LI congressman Steve Israel, “This bureaucratic overreach and utter failure of commonsense left a little girl, a U.S. citizen no less, stranded thousands of miles from her parents.”... Chinese-Hating Vietnamese Pickpocket Busted For Chinatown Spree

A retired Vietnamese-American restaurateur living in Florida was indicted in Manhattan yesterday on charges of grand larceny, bribery, and "jostling," which is the legal term for pickpocketing. 67-year-old Ha Vasko, who is reportedly well-off and owns a $400,000 home in Melbourne, Florida, enjoys taking trips to NYC and robbing Chinese people in Chinatown because she can't stand the Chinese, court papers allege. "I hate Chinese people," Vasko explained to the police after her fourth arrest in March. And she doesn't hate them because she's jealous they have a "town" in NYC and Vietnam doesn't. No, she hates them because of their knock-offs. ... [ MORE ]

Comedy Venue Trying To Turn East Village Into Twisted David Lynch Fantasy, Clearly

Earlier this month East Village locals rallied against the UCB Theater's Hot Chicks Room, a bar attached to their new comedy venue. The name was discarded, the sign was taken down, and the NIMBYs target heart rates went back to normal... until the red curtains came up. ... [ MORE ]
