You'll recall that during his first mayoral campaign, a New York magazine reporter asked Mike Bloomberg if he'd ever smoked grass, to which the future plutocrat replied, "You bet I did. And I enjoyed it." And since taking office, he's also enjoyed locking up New Yorkers (most of them minorities) for low-level marijuana possession. During his administration, the NYPD has made more than 350,000 misdemeanor pot arrests—more than Dinkins, Koch, and Giuliani combined. Last year this folly cost NYC an estimated $75 million dollars, according to a report by the Drug Policy Alliance (below). [MORE] | Yesterday, we were tantalized by the "hipster trap," baited with PBR, American Spirits, pink sunglasses and a yellow bike chain. We talked to Will Simon today, who took the above picture on Sunday, and he told us a little more background info on the cardboard traps.... He'll be at Radio City Music Hall on April 8 (a Friday night!) and tickets go on sale tomorrow—they are $79 (plus a $14.35 fee) and $109 (plus a $17.55 fee). Here's the show's description:... Cafarella by the head of the Nassau Police Benevolent Association. Cafarella, 58, lives nearby and was reportedly driving by moments after Nassau police fatally shot an emotionally disturbed man in his house. Now, with the frenzy of the iPad 2's debut, the Post has found a "cutthroat Asian group" which "[scored] nearly every iPad 2 it can get its hands since the hot gizmo went on sale last week, to re-peddle at exorbitant prices here and in China."... Gottfried, who can probably relate to feeling washed up, was fired for making such remarks as "I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, 'They'll be another one floating by any minute now.' " (He later apologized "to anyone who was offended by my attempt at humor regarding the tragedy in Japan.") And he's not the only one displaying a sickening disregard for victims of the catastrophe. A rapper, a WNBA player, and a Fox news pundit have all used the tsunami as an opportunity to share their warped worldview. ... According to a Fidelity survey of 1,000 millionaire households, a couple million just isn't enough to feel like a millionaire anymore! About four in ten millionaires do not feel wealthy anymore, and those who don't said that they would need an asset level of $7.5 million to feel that high again. Just $7.5 million? That's barely enough to keep one's private hunting island stocked with attractive human quarry! ... [ MORE ] | | The endless war over the controversial Park 51 Islamic community center and mosque planned for Lower Manhattan spilled into court yesterday, as Pat Robertson's American Center for Law and Justice—using former firefighter Timothy Brown as a prop—accused the Landmarks Preservation Commission of being Mayor Bloomberg's puppet. The plaintiffs say the LPC did the bidding of City Hall when it ruled that the 150-year-old building on Park Place didn't merit landmark status, but a lawyer for the city said that's just a bunch of tinfoil hat ALL CAPS 9/11 GRASSY KNOLL STUFF....
