Can You Use A Subway Seat For Something Besides Sitting?

_Can You Use A Subway Seat For Something Besides Sitting?

Subway etiquette is a tricky thing when it comes to seats. The police the past few years have been very aggressive about cracking down on seat hogs who dare put their bag or their feet on another seat, and last week our readers were very vocal about when you should give your seat up for pregnant women. But what is the rule if a person uses a seat for their bag but doesn't sit down themselves? That's the question brought up in post on Transportation Nation. [MORE]

Grisly Account Of Yesterday's Sanitation Truck Accident

Yesterday, a pedestrian was fatally hit by a private sanitation truck in an accident at the Myrtle Avenue and Broadway intersection in Brooklyn. The victim, who was identified by police as a black male in his 60s, was struck by an employee of Yankel's Demolition and Rubbish Removal while crossing the street; he was DOA on the scene, and the driver hasn't been charged with anything. Reader Sabina Martin wrote us with this eyewitness account of the accident:... [ MORE ]
_What Happened Outside The Delancey Last Night?

What Happened Outside The Delancey Last Night?

Around 3 a.m. we received word over the wire that there was a "large crowd" on 168 Delancey Street, AKA bar & nightclub The Delancey. However, the NYPD told us, "That's just typical of any night. It's not something we would be reporting on," so we'll have to rely on our "Twitnesses" for information. Here's what we're piecing together.... [ MORE ]

Some People Are Still Dealing With Blizzard Tickets

It seems strange on a day like today to reminisce on winter, and the fact that it was only two months ago that we were dealing with blizzards, snow piles and slowdowns. But that's just what the Times did today, in an article about four people who believe that they were unfairly ticketed for failing to shovel their sidewalks at the same time when the city was failing to clear many of the streets. ... Giuliani Blasts Obama, Flirts With 2012 During NH Talk

Former mayor Rudy Giuliani was in New Hampshire last night, speaking at a Manchester Republican fundraiser and, surprise, surprise, criticizing President Obama. According to Concord Monitor, the Mayor of 9/11 had a field day calling Obama's foreign policy actions weak, noting that when France proposed instituting a no-fly zone, "Our president, the leader of the free world, said, 'A what? That's hard! A no fly zone is r-r-r-really hard!' Can we stand two more years of this? We have to. Can we stand six more of this? We don't have to. It's up to you, and it's up to me. It's up to the Republican Party.... This president has been a failure in just about everything he's done."... [ MORE ]
_Reminder: SUPERMOON Tonight!

Reminder: SUPERMOON Tonight!

If you don't have rooftop access in your building, tonight might be the night to finally bite the bullet and break in. Due to the moon's elliptical orbit, the moon will appear bigger and closer tonight than it has in about 18 years, making it just that much easier to yell at. "It is called a supermoon because this is a very noticeable alignment that at first glance would seem to have an effect. The 'super' in supermoon is really just the appearance of being closer, but unless we were measuring the Earth-Moon distance by laser rangefinders...there is really no difference." said NASA's Dr. James Garvin. Here's a video explaining it:... [ MORE ]

Allies Enter Libyan Airspace, Led By French Fighter Jets

French fighter jets flew over Libya, after Libyan leader Moammer Gadhafi's forces seemed intent to flout the U.N.'s no-fly zone declaration. However, Gadhafi sent a letter to President Barack Obama stating, "I have all the Libyan people with me and I'm prepared to die. And they are prepared to die for me. Men, women and even children."... Photo: Everyone's Irish On St. Patty's Day, Even Rats

Oh, don't you know these proud Irish rats McBitey and O'Plaguey never miss the St. Patrick's Day parade along Fifth Avenue? Every year they dye their fur a vibrant shade of green and dash along the route, hopping from one shoulder to the next to cheer everyone on. And when the last kilt has been crawled up and the last lass has been kissed, they go get wasted on the window sills of the Irish Historical Society, like all the other "inebriated Irish."...
