_Allies Destroy Gadhafi's Compound, NY Times Reporters Freed

Last night, a missile strike hit Libyan strongman leader Moammer Gadhafi's compound in Bab al-Aziza. CNN reported that the compound "lay in shambles Monday following bombing by the United States and its allies, prompting a debate about whether the allies were trying to kill the Libyan leader." But a coalition military official told the network "neither Gadhafi nor his residence were intended targets of the bombing late Sunday...[and he] said the compound was targeted because it contained command-and-control facilities for Libyan forces." U.S. Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said at a Pentagon press briefing, "We are not going after Gadhafi." [MORE]

Cops Tell Queens Holi Celebrators That Powder Is Illegal

Yesterday, Hindus (and fans of fun spring parties) gathered in Queens for the annual Festival of Colors, Holi (or Phagwah). Traditionally the festival, which is supposed to bring luck for the spring, is celebrated by people throwing colored talcum powder and water at each other. What Are Your Ideas For An NYPD Mascot?

He shows up at any Tokyo police event, has some brother and sister mascots, and even has his own theme song! So it got us thinking: why doesn't the NYPD have a mascot? ... [ MORE ]

This week New York magazine's cover story concerns the battle over bike lanes, and if you've been following along with this ongoing saga, you won't be surprised that the in-depth article is full of reasonable, circumspect, and totally-not-paranoid statements from both sides of the debate. Here are our five favorite:... [ MORE ]

Cyclist, Pedestrian Victims In Separate Hit-And-Run Incidents

A pedestrian in the Bronx and bicyclist in Queens were victims of separate hit-and-run crashes over the weekend. In the Bronx, police quickly rounded up a suspect: Seth Johnson, 35, who was allegedly intoxicated at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday and fatally struck Thomas Riley, 23, who was trying to flag a cab on East Fordham Road near Bathgate Avenue. Police sources tell the Post that Johnson stopped and got out of his minivan after the accident, but when a witness tried to grab him, he drove off.... [ MORE ]

Woman Who Photographed Cops Got Beatdown, Files $24 Million Lawsuit

A Harlem woman has filed a $24 million lawsuit against the city, accusing cops of breaking her nose with billy clubs because she was photographing them during an arrest. Hope Gonzalez, 30, was shopping on Riverside Drive and West 158th Street in October, 2009, when she saw several cops "abusing" a young man. The Post article doesn't have much detail, but Gonzalez says she took out her cell phone to document the incident, and that's when she got swept up into the vaguely-described incident.... [ MORE ]
