Who Will Pay For All Those School Lunches?

_Who Will Pay For All Those School Lunches?
The latest place for cash-strapped public schools to squeeze out every last penny? School lunches. After the first three months of school those famously hard-to-swallow meals were the source of a $2.5 million hole in the Department of Education's budget, and now school principals are being forced to put pressure on parents to pay up for their kid's grub. Bloomberg Questions That 41% Abortion Rate

Not many people were happy to find out that 41% of the city's pregnancies end in abortion, so much so that he is pretty much sticking his fingers in his ears and trying to forget the data even exist. He told WNYC, “I have no idea if that’s an accurate number or not. I just don’t know." Well Bloomy, here's a study that shows multiple groups coming up with similar numbers. And check out table 4.13 here. At least teen pregnancy is down?... [ MORE ]

Taco Bell Giving 10 Million Free Tacos, Grateful for Lawsuit

Taco Bell is aggressively defending itself against a lawsuit accusing the chain of false advertising because their "taco meat filling" is allegedly only about 35% beef, with binders, preservatives, additives and other agents making up the other 65%. First Taco Bell threatened to sue the plaintiffs and anybody else who talked trash about them. Then they took out full page ads in several major newspapers literally thanking the law firm that's suing them, because it's giving them the opportunity to clear the air about their beef. Now they're just giving the shit food product away for free.... [ MORE ]

Apartment Too Cold? Your Landlord May Be Cheating You

It's cold out there, if you hadn't noticed. And when it's cold, we'll forgive our radiator for the 6 a.m. wake-up call because we're just thankful the heat is on. But for many people across the city that's not the case, and City Council wants to do something about it. In new legislation debated by the Council yesterday, landlords would be fined up to $500 per day they don't provide adequate heat and hot water, and up to $1000 for subsequent violations.... [ MORE ]

Experiment Will Produce "Journalism" With Robotic Automation

A Carnegie Mellon research team specializing in human-computer interaction is conducting an experiment to see if they can create "an automated system for producing quality journalism using an army of untrained workers." Using the Amazon.com "Mechanical Turk" crowd-sourcing marketplace, the experiment, dubbed "My Boss Is A Robot," will attempt to produce a 500-word article on a newly-released scientific paper. An automated software system will use the unskilled workers on Mechanical Turk, assigning them tasks like reading the abstract and identifying the most interesting aspects. Hm, this all sounds very familiar...:... [ MORE ]

_New Jersey Getting All Our Mixed Martial Arts Revenue!

New Jersey Getting All Our Mixed Martial Arts Revenue!

If boxing already means men get repeatedly punched in the head so bad it can cause brain damage, we don't think that Mixed Martial Arts fighting could be that much worse. But it's still illegal in New York, which means New Jersey is seeing all the MMA action—and cash. NJ.com reports that an MMA event at Madison Square Garden would attract 10,000 local attendees, and would net the city around $1.4 million per event. But it's not like the city needs the money, right?... [ MORE ]
