Yesterday, New Yorkers for Marriage Equality, a part Human Rights Campaign, released a video with former President George W. Bush's daughter Barbara announcing her support for gay marriage. Barbara Bush, who lives in Manhattan, says in the video, "I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality. New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love." [MORE]

Driver Who Fatally Doored Cyclist Indicted On Felony Charges

In September, Jasmine Herron was biking along Atlantic Avenue when motorist Krystal Francis opened the door of her parked car, sending Herron swerving into the street and under a B45 bus. Herron was killed, and Francis was charged with driving with a suspended license but claimed she had nothing to do with the accident and quickly left the scene to attend a party. Francis has now been indicted on felony charges of leaving the scene of an accident. But according to Francis's lawyer, "It's obvious she was at the scene."... [ MORE ]
_MTA Mulls Sliding Doors in Subway Stations

MTA Mulls Sliding Doors in Subway Stations

Nearly every time we report on a person jumping or falling into the subway tracks, we receive comments along the lines of "is it just me, or has this been happening a lot lately?" Sadly, it just happens a lot. In 2009 alone, 90 people were struck by trains and 40 of them died. In an effort to lower those numbers the MTA is going back to the idea well and is asking for proposals for a system of sliding doors on subway platforms. Like in other cities (and at AirTrain stops), the sliding glass doors would go on the edge of the platform and would only open when a train was in the station.... [ MORE ]

Guess The Year: Station Painting

What year did the MTA decide to give this station a paint job? (And was it the last time the station saw a fresh coat of paint?!) We'll update with the date, as well as the location, later today (along with a photo credit and link to the source site... which will prove it's not Photoshopped!).... [ MORE ]

City Taps IBM To Take Servers To The Cloud

Because CityTime worked out so well, our mayor has decided to try his hand at another massive attempt to streamline city infrastructure. IBM has just landed a $100 million, five-year NYC Citywide IT Infrastructure Services (CITIServ) contract. Meant to centralize and update data centers at 50 city agencies as well "provide better security and improve efficiency," the contract should, in layman's terms, take the city's servers "to the cloud." Just don't let this cloud rain where it shouldn't—OK Bloomberg?... [ MORE ]

No, Really: Lying Nun Cries Rape To Hide Fake Sex Romp

Oh, where to start with this one? A Brooklyn nun has recanted her story of being raped and dragged eight blocks through the snow by a 250-pound 6"4' black man. According to the nun, she made up the story to cover up a consensual sex romp she'd had with a bodega worker she slipped into her convent. Not crazy enough for you? Well, according to the nun's convent, the Apostles of Infinite Love in East Flatbush, neither the rape nor the bumping and grinding with the bodega boy is true. ... [ MORE ]

Wall Street Execs Warned They Are Al Qaeda Targets

Al Qada terrorists in Yemen have apparently been plotting to attack some Wall Street firms and their executives, prompting intelligence officials to warn the Masters of the Universe. According to NBC New York, "Intelligence officials stress the threats are general in nature and there is 'no indication of a targeted assassination plot' against any Wall Street executive. But NBCNewYork.com has learned officials fear the names of some top banking executives have been discussed by terror operatives overseas."... [ MORE ]

Pro-Palestine Brooklyn College Prof Rehired, Hikind Ashamed

In a surprise twist, Brooklyn College has rehired the professor who was previously unhired after Assemblyman Dov Hikind complained about his alleged anti-Israeli leanings. The college has maintained that Kristofer Petersen-Overton, 26, was fired from teaching a Middle East politics seminar because he didn't have a Ph.D.—not because of his political beliefs. The Political Science Department had unanimously voted to approve Petersen-Overton to teach the seminar, but last week—within 24 hours after Hikind complained—the administration overruled the vote. Accusations of academic repression flew, and a petition in support of Petersen-Overton drew 1,700 signatures. Hikind's not happy, and tells us:... [ MORE ]
