Earlier today, Gawker ran a story on upstate Republican congressman Chris Lee in which he sent some photos of himself—one shirtless—to a woman he met on Craigslist. In the e-mails he also told her he was a divorced 39-year-old lobbyist (he's married and 46). Honestly, we didn't think too much of it because in the age of Elliot Spitzer and John Edwards (not to mention European politicians like Silvio Berlusconi) a married pol seeking extracurricular lovin' is about as surprising as a hangover after a heavy night of drinking. But apparently Lee isn't as jaded as we are. His resignation notice, effective immediately, is already up on his website. One was giving her child a taste of her Coca-Cola, and received a prompt scolding from the other mother, who warned, "You give your baby Coke? You should at least give him Diet!" But that sage health advice may be bound for the Old Wives' Tale bin, because a federally-funded study of NYC soda drinkers suggests a link between diet soda consumption and an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks!... [ MORE ] | | Did you ever have a ham radio when you were a kid? Or see Contact? If not, this is a reminder that it's "the licensed and private use of designated radio bands, for purposes of private recreation, non-commercial exchange of messages, experimentation, self-training, and emergency communication." Paul Isaacs of the East Village has one, including a 30-foot radio tower that he insists was installed legally and licensed by the FCC. But neighbors who want it taken down complain that it's too tall, and the DOB recently issued a violation on the antenna.... [ MORE ] | | Potholes are a scourge whose depths of evil know no end: already, the DOT has had to fill more than 45,000 potholes, cave ins and the like since the first storm hit in December. There are tons of people writing about their struggles with them on NY1 and CNN, and we had our own brush with these doomholes when we were trapped on i278/BQE for over two hours last week due to "pothole maintenance." But now, there is one Staten Island man leading the charge against these portals of dilapidated pavement.... [ MORE ] | | An NYU professor whose big plan to document his life using a camera surgically implanted in the back of his head has hit a snag. You'll recall that Wafaa Bilal, a provocative "performative and interactive" artist, completed his transformation to cyborg at the beginning of December. The project, titled "The 3rd I," was commissioned by a museum in Qatar, and you can view all the photos taken so far here (one every minute!). Bilal had agreed to wear a lens cap on NYU grounds so as not to violate the privacy of the university's notoriously reclusive students, but now the project faces another challenge: his body has rejected the implant! Looks like the singularity is further than we thought.... [ MORE ] | | You almost have to feel sorry for Cathie Black. Almost. All she wanted to do was run the New York Department of Education in peace and instead all she gets are boos, angry parents and, now, threats her new job might not be hers for long. Remember how she had to get a waiver to take the job because she wasn't qualified? And how parents swore they'd appeal when she got it? Well, it looks like they're living up to their threat.... [ MORE ] | | The Department of Transportation is greatly expanding the number of reduced speed zones around the city, and Boerum Hill wants to get in on the slowdown. This year, the department will triple its 20 mph reduced speed zones around schools, and is also trying out a pilot 20 mph zone program that would slow traffic on an area-wide, rather than individual street, basis. The plan calls for at least 75 reduced speed zones, if a pilot zone in the Bronx is deemed a success. CBS 2 reports that in Boerum Hill, community leaders are already calling for the DOT to include them.... [ MORE ] | | |
