NYU Students Demonstrate Their Massive Debt

_NYU Students Demonstrate Their Massive Debt

NYU students have a lot of debt and they are sick of it, apparently. Earlier this afternoon a group of students raged (peacefully) against the machine in Washington Square Park, donning masks and t-shirts on which they had written how much they owe. The aim was to bring attention to the fact that NYU's students carry a cumulative $659 million in debt, the highest in the country for a non-profit college or university. [MORE]

Scholar Who Mocked Lara Logan's Attack: Twitter Is Not For Nuance

The journalist and now ex-NYU fellow who belittled the "brutal and sustained sexual assault" on CBS correspondent Lara Logan last week in Cairo, Egypt is now on an apology tour. Well, sort of: Nir Rosen, who resigned his position at NYU's Center on Law and Security yesterday after the uproar his Tweets ("Jesus Christ, at a moment when she is going to become a martyr and glorified we should at least remember her role as a major war monger") caused, told CNN's Anderson Cooper he had no excuse, he "was a jerk," but then blamed his actions on the late hour, "It was 2 AM and I was just being thoughtless," and not really knowing what happened to Logan. But Cooper called him out on that.... [ MORE ]

Justin Bieber Gives His Two Cents On Abortion

There's nothing like spotting a surefire controversy in its infancy: in a front cover story with Rolling Stone magazine, pint-sized haircut/prepubescent girl magnet Justin Bieber waxes rhapsodic about classic teenage stuff like girlfriends, Will Ferrell movies, annnnnnd abortion. According to RS: "'I really don't believe in abortion,' Bieber says. 'It's like killing a baby?' How about in cases of rape? 'Um. Well, I think that's really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don't know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that.'" We finally GOTCHA Bieb!... [ MORE ]

[UPDATE] NJ Mom Sues Century 21 for Millions Over 80 Cents

[Update Below] New Jersey hat maker and housewife Tova Gerson has filed a $5 million class action lawsuit against Century 21, accusing the retailer of shortchanging her 80 cents after she returned some clothing that she bought with a $5 coupon. According to the lawsuit, which the Post reports was filed by her father, Gerson had bought over $100 worth of clothes and later returned a $17.97 children's ensemble because she didn't like the color. But instead of giving her the full refund, the store deducted the 80 cents she'd saved, on a pro-rated basis, by using the discount coupon! Seems like Century 21 had no idea who they were dealing with. ... [ MORE ]

Handcuffs, Ball Gag, Whip Found In Craigslist "Sex Slave" Apartment

There are more details about the alleged rape and imprisonment of a Wisconsin woman in a Brooklyn apartment. The Brooklyn Paper reports, "When police arrived, they found [suspect John] Hopkins and his victim as well as bolts on the ceiling, a rope on the floor, and a bag by the bed with a pair of handcuffs, a ball gag, a whip and several other sex toys, according to sources."... When Destroying Pot Evidence, Don't Brag About It to Cops

A Queens man who survived the infamous Sean Bell shooting is in trouble with the law again. Police sources tell the Post that Trent Benefield was "brazenly" smoking a marijuana-stuffed cigar, or "blunt," on a street in Jamaica yesterday afternoon when cops spotted him. But Benefield thought fast and swallowed the remaining contraband. Unfortunately, he then proceeded to stop thinking, reportedly telling the officers, "You have nothing on me, I ate it!"... [ MORE ]

Is It Offensive to Honor Black History Month With Fried Chicken?

In what seems to be part of a trend of awkward, possibly offensive corporate cafeteria menus, Citigroup is the latest company to raise some eyebrows with its staff Black History Month meal. Last year, ?uestlove of The Roots raised questions about a Black History Month meal in the NBC cafeteria, which featured fried chicken, collard greens, corn bread, black eyed peas. The drummer tweeted about it, and the sign announcing the menu was quickly removed. Now it's Citi's turn to backpedal!... [ MORE ]

New Anti-Abortion Bus Ads Sure To Not Stir Any Pots

Pro-life organization the Chiaroscuro Foundation is putting up the above ad on buses across the city for the next month. The ads are in response to a report last month that 41 percent of viable pregnancies end in abortion in NYC. After the report was released, the Chiaroscuro Foundation organized a press conference with Archbishop Timothy Dolan, during which he called the figure "downright chilling." The group is allegedly annoyed at Mayor Bloomberg's understated response to the figure—he told WNYC, “I have no idea if that’s an accurate number or not. I just don’t know." ... [ MORE ]
