Yesterday evening a cab barreled into the Capital One bank on 69th Street and Broadway, taking down a traffic signal, a pedestrian crossing signal and a 32-year-old woman walking on the sidewalk. Cab driver Malkit Singh says he was rear ended while waiting at a red light on Broadway and smashed into the bank with a 46-year-old female passenger inside. Both of the women were taken to the hospital. The band, led by James Murphy, announced that their show at MSG on April 2nd will be their last one ever: "we are retiring from the game. gettin’ out. movin’ on. but for just one more night, we will be playing with friends and family for nearly 3 hours-playing stuff we’ve never played before and going out with a bang." ... City health officials say the three adults contracted the disease while in the Dominican Republic for a wedding, and though all of them have already recovered, health officials will test them to see if the strain they caught was the same strain that has ravaged Haiti.... [ MORE ] | | Police have charged Mario Vasquez of Brooklyn with vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of crime with a fatality, unauthorized use of a vehicle, driving a motor vehicle without a license and driving while intoxicated after he hit 80-year-old Maria Prikul and her caretaker on Bath Avenue and 18th Avenue yesterday morning, dragging Prikul a full block and leaving her dead. Passersby made Vasquez stop his car and helped to lift the van off Prikul. One good Samaritan said, "I looked at her face, but she was already dead. Her clothes were ripped. There was blood in her mouth."... [ MORE ] | | Yesterday it was reported that Mayor Bloomberg would be spending at least $245,000 of taxpayer money on his three Executive Chefs at Gracie Mansion. People were unsurprisingly not so thrilled with this, but at least one restaurant has an idea to avoid that cost: have all the different city restaurants cater a few pro bono meals for the Mayor. "Teachers are so instrumental in young people's lives. What's more important? Kids getting an education or putting on fancy dinners?", said Salvatore Rappo, manager at East Village restaurant Spina. Mayoral spokesman Jason Post sounded psyched about the idea, or at least the promise of "donated" food, and urged Rappo to follow-through on his offer with a call to City Hall.... Don't worry, it's a balmy 40 degrees and there is plenty else to do. The Daily News suggests seeing the ballet, eating cupcakes, watching movies or going to the Lunar New Year parade through Chinatown. Though we can't see why you'd venture outside for some parade when Puppy Bowl VII starts at 3! Our money's on CB, the Shih Tzu/Beagle mix who looks just scruffy enough to win.... [ MORE ] | | Yesterday J Greg De Felice sent us a photo of this car/art project, writing, "This graffiti-stained, newspaper-filled (and now snow-covered) car has been sitting abandoned on West 15th Street between 8th & 9th Ave since at least last fall. It has yet to be ticketed or towed." We can think of at least two explanations: one, the driver has been dutifully paying the tickets like rent to a storage company, in order to keep all of those old newspapers protected from the elements. Or two, the driver has somehow found a magical parking space immune to alternate sides rules. ... [ MORE ] | | All season, there has been a lot of conflicting reports about where All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony might end up: he will only sign with the Knicks, he won't sign with the Nets, Denver doesn't want to trade him, etc. But according to Yahoo Sports, several NBA sources say that Anthony's agent, Leon Rose, has been making things crystal clear: he has reportedly begun informing teams that Anthony is really, truly, we-swear-it, only interested in signing a contract extension with the Knicks....
