Call Me When Streaming Matches Blu-ray Posted: 15 Jan 2011 09:45 AM PST I'll be the first to admit that when Blu-ray first launched, I was skeptical. I wasn't sure if the new technology was a worthwhile investment for someone like me. Sure, it delivered more storage and higher-quality video and audio, but I simply saw it as another way to take my hard-earned cash for little benefit over DVD.
Over time, I realized that my perception was off. Blu-ray has not only become my go-to platform when I want to buy movies or television shows, but it has also helped me replace the need for DVD in my home. Practically my entire DVD collection has been wiped out in favor of Blu-ray. And as time has gone on, I haven't missed my once-beloved DVD one bit. But now my time is being split between watching Blu-ray content and streaming video via services like Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand. I've found that not having to get off the couch to watch something I'm interested in is far more preferable than finding the DVD copy and popping that into a player. Call me lazy, but that convenience is something that makes streaming a staple in my home. However, when I pit streaming against Blu-ray, I can't help but choose the latter option when I want to sit back, relax, and enjoy a movie. The streaming option is certainly much easier to get up and running, and if I went all-streaming, I could reduce all the clutter in my entertainment center, but then I would lose the higher-quality video and audio that comes with Blu-ray. Streaming is great, but do me a favor and pop Avatar into your Blu-ray player, running on your 1080p set, and tell me that isn't the best way to enjoy that film. Yes, most streaming services, like Apple's iTunes content on the Apple TV, are available in 720p, rather than 1080p, which makes the comparison a bit unfair, but isn't that central to this entire argument? Until streaming can match Blu-ray in terms of overall quality and sound, it's simply not the best way to enjoy content. Luckily, companies like Vudu realize that. The company offers a 1080p option to customers that actually looks quite nice. But even in those cases where folks get 1080p content from Vudu, it can't quite live up to the audio-visual quality we enjoy on Blu-ray. And as convenient as Netflix is, the company's streaming option in no way comes close to matching the experience of watching the same film on Blu-ray. As much as I enjoy the many streaming services I use, they have a long way to go to match Blu-ray. Yes, streaming is convenient, and yes, it's getting better by the day. But to say that it can be a replacement for Blu-ray, at least right now, is simply outrageous. |
Best Buy lists three new iPad models “coming soon” Posted: 15 Jan 2011 07:38 AM PST Best Buy has added listings for three new iPad models, each tipped as “coming soon” and as having WiFi access. No mention of any 3G support is listed for any of the three SKUs – 1945674, 1945595 and 1945531 – only WiFi, making it perhaps unlikely that these are Verizon’s tipped incoming CDMA iPads; instead, it could be early listings for the second-gen iPad 2.
Two of the models are priced at $599.99, while the third is $100 more expensive, at $699.99. Best Buy has no images to accompany the listings, and each has the same “Apple iPad SKU WiFi” description and “Apple iPad” model. Apple is expected to announce the iPad 2 later this quarter, perhaps as early as late-January or early February 2011. The tablet is expected to have a more squared-off design, together with new speakers and ports as evidenced by leaked iPad 2 cases, along with a higher resolution display and new, dual-core ARM Cortex A9 based processor. [Thanks Eric!] |
More iPad 2 cases leak for second-gen Apple slate Posted: 15 Jan 2011 03:16 AM PST Despite Apple’s best efforts, details of the iPad 2 continue to trickle out; yesterday it was talk of an ARM Cortex A9 dual-core processor, a “super high resolution” display and dual-mode GSM/CDMA support, while today it’s a batch of supposed iPad 2 cases. The handiwork of TopAppo, the silicone case shows the by-now familiar squared-off back plate believed to distinguish the second-gen iPad, along with cut-outs for a larger speaker.
Now, it’s unclear where the company has got the details for the case from – this could all be speculative, it could be based on leaked information or rumor, or it might be relying on more official measurements – so as with all these leaks we’re grabbing a fistful of salt. Still, it’s not the first case to look like this, and as we’ve seen with previous accessories for Apple devices the Shenzhen industry do seem to have an uncanny knack for narrowing in on the official design. According to TopAppo, manufacturing of the iPad 2 case is ready to begin now, while iPhone 5 accessory manufacture is also expected to start imminently. Apple is tipped to announce the iPad 2 later this quarter, while the fifth-generation iPhone isn’t expected until midway through the year. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Notion Ink Adam clears FCC ahead of midweek shipping Posted: 15 Jan 2011 03:05 AM PST Notion Ink has confirmed that its Adam slate has finally passed through the FCC, which means full clearance for the Android tablet and that the company can print the mandatory labels. That’s expected to begin on Monday, with Adam shipping out from Wednesday; delays in the FCC granting the appropriate codes had held up finalizing the production models.
Adam will have a product code of NI3421A01 (while the FCC guarantee code and FNR are Y2G and 0020356499 respectively). That’s apparently named after consecutive numbers in the Fibonacci series, each iteration – and there have been nine, including the shipping batch – marking a significant event (good or bad) in Notion Ink’s progress to market. A01, meanwhile, stands for the first in the Adam series; the company isn’t being shy about having plans beyond this initial model. As for the second round of pre-orders, due to the issues surrounding the first batch, Notion Ink has perhaps wisely held off until it can come up with a more inclusive solution. The company is apparently “a few days away” from deliveries in the US and Europe. Notion Ink Adam UI demo: |

iPad 2 with High Res Screen, SD Card Slot and iPhone 5 with A5 Processor? Posted: 14 Jan 2011 07:40 PM PST Take a peek at some high probability rumors coming your way via Engadget, a couple about the iPad 2, iPhone 5, and a next generation Apple TV. First there’s a few bits having to do with that super mysterious iPad 2 dummy model that was sighted at a booth at CES 2011 – non working, not confirmed as anything legit, but the details here don’t seem that far fetched: a “super high resolution” screen similar to that of iPhone 4′s Retina Display (hotness.) Then there’s the notion of an SD card slot – this one I and we are a little bit less confident in, unless Apple plans on marketing the iPad to be more like the easy-open G3 towers of yore, openable and customizable – almost like a computer that was meant to be modified!
The final couple of details on the iPad two are thus – a screen size that’s exactly the same as the current model (likely,) and both front and rear cameras (also likely.) Next there’s a cool rumor surrounding Apple’s selection of communication chipsets – they’re moving to Qualcomm! How likely is that? This move would let Apple work with dual-modes that would allow two carriers (Verizon and ATT for example) to work in the same model phone. iPhone 5 would be able to support both CDMA and GSM – no problem. Finally there’s a double rumor that says the iPhone 5 will both be “completely redesigned” and will be launching this summer. The current Apple A4 processor inside the iPhone is a single-core Cortex A8 processor – this would, if the rumors are true, be upgraded to a Cortext A9-based multicore processor (called then the Apple A5) – and this same processor would then be used in the newest version of Apple TV. A couple (if not several) of these rumors can be substantiated by this iPhone 5 post written by Chris Davies earlier today. That all sound alright to you? |
