Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac Works with Zune HD Posted: 10 Jan 2011 02:15 PM PST When Microsoft officially unveiled Windows Phone 7, and unveiled that the device would sync with Zune Software, there were a lot of Mac owners out there trying to figure out how, exactly, they’d be able to utilize a Windows Phone 7 device, considering that Zune Software doesn’t work for Apple-branded computers. That’s where Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac comes in. A tool to sync your device, and bring your media from iTunes (that’s not still protected) onto your Windows Phone 7 device.
But what about the Zune HD, which has been out significantly longer than Windows Phone 7? It looks like thanks to some minor tweaks, found by some members at ZuneBoards, you can actually get the WP7 Connector for Mac to register your Zune HD. It isn’t as simple as plugging in your HD, unfortunately, but the steps aren’t too extensive. Of course, if you’re not comfortable changing some settings around, then you may not want to head on through the source link and find out how to do this. [via ZatzNotFunny] |
Gigabyte G1-Killer Series of Gaming Motherboards Unveiled at CES 2011 Posted: 10 Jan 2011 02:01 PM PST Gigabyte had more than one announcement to release at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The first, which focused on the company’s first AMD FusionT Mini-ITX mainboard, was an announcement that plenty of PC builders and enthusiasts were excited for. The company’s latest announcement at the event is geared specifically for gamers, and gamers who want to take their rigs seriously.
The company has officially announced their brand new G1-Killer Series of gaming motherboards, including the G1.Sniper, G1.Assassin, and G1.Guerilla. Each of the gaming motherboards will be based on the Intel X58 chipset, as well as include the Killer E2100 network solutions. The company says that the latter technology makes the new gaming motherboards the fastest ever created for online gaming. The system is designed to prioritize traffic within any particular game, while still managing to deliver remarkable control to how your network handles the bandwidth coming in and out. The price for the new gaming motherboards hasn’t been announced yet, nor has the release schedule. Press Release

AMD CEO Resigns, Search Begins for Replacement Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:52 PM PST Breaking just now, just a moment ago, AMD have announced that their CEO Dirk Meyer has resigned and that they’ve temporarily assigned Vide President and CFO Thomas Seifert to his post. They’ve begun searching with their CEO Search Committee which is led by Bruce Claflin, Chairman of AMD’s Board of Directors. You know what that means? Everyone get your resumes out, get all your business cards stacked up, your dohnuts eaten, and grab that super hard job and rock it!
In an effort to explain Meyer’s reasons for quitting the company, Claflin says the following: "Dirk became CEO during difficult times. He successfully stabilized AMD while simultaneously concluding strategic initiatives including the launch of GLOBALFOUNDRIES, the successful settlement of our litigation with Intel and delivering Fusion APUs to the market." Hard stuff. The rest of the press release (below) goes on to assure the world that AMD is still the greatest and that loosing their CEO is no big deal. They’re just sipping their coffee and having a good time looking through pages of headshots and business cards – easy Monday!

Dell Venue Pro in the UK Delayed Until February Due to Software Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:45 PM PST The Dell Venue Pro is one of the Windows Phone 7 handsets that, while it hasn’t seen a huge adoption rate due to the fact that it hasn’t seen an actual “smooth” release since its announcement, is still one of the more popular handsets. It’s got the features that people want, and a portrait slider that hides a physical keyboard. But, it looks like the device, as far as those heading to the United Kingdom are concerned anyway, won’t be making a timely arrival, either.
Clove UK has announced that the Dell Venue Pro will be delayed until about the middle of February, as the carrier is having trouble with the software that handles MMS. Clove is pointing the finger entirely at Microsoft, saying that it is their software having the issues. Clove was expecting to stock the device at the beginning of January. There’s not an exact date yet, but if you’re looking forward to the device, then stay tuned. Perhaps a certain upgrade can help with the situation. [via WMPowerUser] |
Intel Paying NVIDIA Technology Licensing Fees of $1.5 BILLION DOLLARS Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:33 PM PST Today NVIDIA lets the world know that it’s signed a six year cross-lisencing agreement with Intel that includes a payment to NVIDIA of an aggregate of $1.5 billion USD in licensing fees payable in five annual installments starting on January 18, 2011. This will not only be for the future use of NVIDIA’s technology, it’ll allow them (both companies) to agree to drop all outstanding legal disputes between the two of them. Now they can be good friends forever!
Their current agreement expires March 31, 2011. This new one will give Intel continued access to all of NVIDIA’s patents, while NVIDIA receives the monetary sum as well as retaining use of Intel’s patents. This agreement excludes Intel’s proprietary processors, flash memory and certain chipsets for the Intel platform. Take a peek at the full press release below, and we’ll be keeping you updated as this develops through the day and … you know… the oncoming years.

Apple Has Legal Battle with Nokia Moved to District of Delaware Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:27 PM PST The most legal problems between Apple and Nokia have taken a step forward today, with Apple winning a limited motion in the proceedings. The companies are both moving forward with assertions that each company has infringed on pertinent patens to technologies in use today. The motion, which was rewarded recently, means that the proceedings will be transferred from the Western District of Wisconsin, to the District of Delaware.
The switch means that this court will now see the proceedings between three lawsuits between Apple and Nokia. It wasn’t easy for Apple to win the motion, though, as Nokia’s lawyers challenged the motion to transfer it to the District of Delaware, citing that it could delay the rulings from Wisconsin by up to a year and a half. However, it’s been mentioned that Apple was successful in the process because the other filings in the District of Delaware, and the filing that was originally in the Western District of Wisconsin were similar. The process is still on going, and there’s no telling how long they will go on. [via Electronista] |
SlashGear Verizon Event Liveblog: Tuesday Jan 11 Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:41 PM PST There’s less than 24 hours to go until Verizon’s last-minute event in New York City, and SlashGear is getting ready to liveblog the whole process at http://live.slashgear.com. According to the rumor mill, we’re expecting Verizon’s first iPhone to make its debut at the event, bringing AT&T’s years of exclusivity in the US to a close.
Verizon and Apple are tight-lipped as to what we can expect, but that hasn’t stopped the leaks from supposedly confirming the CDMA iPhone complete with an unlimited data plan. We’ve also got a comprehensive run-down on why the Verizon iPhone is so eagerly anticipated, and earlier today analyst Ben Bajarin ran through some of the outstanding questions we’re hoping the carrier will answer tomorrow morning. So, join us at 11am EST on Tuesday January 11 2011 – that’s 8am Pacific or 4pm London – for all the details in the SlashGear liveblog. We’ll be kicking things off at http://live.slashgear.com and we’d love to hear your opinions and feedback during the event with our live comment system. |
Airborne Laser Test Bed to Try and Shoot Down Ballistic Missile as Soon as Tonight Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:20 PM PST It was a year ago that the United States military first attempted, and ultimately succeeded, in shooting down a ballistic missile with a laser. And now it looks like they are ready to test it again, and they could be doing it as soon as tonight, if sources are accurate. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Airborne Laser Test Bed, which is a heavily modified jumbo jet that has a chemical laser equipped to its frame, will take off from the California coast, and try to shoot down the missile.
While the military has already proven that they can shoot down a ballistic missile with a laser, the program itself hasn’t seen the best support from the government. In the past, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates actually downgraded the program to a research and development stage, which meant that acquiring another jumbo jet for further testing was out of the question. However, if this experiment is a success, it is likely that the project will receive congressional interest, which could lead to further funding. The military is trying to show that lasers can play an integral part to the strategy of its forces, especially if they can be used in such a manner as the Airborne Laser Test Bed. With this test, which will hopefully succeed versus the failures that the testers faced back in September due to several issues. The test is reportedly going to occur some time tonight, but no exact time frame was issued. [via The Wall Street Journal] |
Verizon Tweets from Twitter for iPhone Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:52 AM PST There’s a certain point where believing in coincidences just doesn’t work. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard the rumor mill churning out rumor after rumor regrading tomorrow’s Verizon event. The consensus is that it’s going to be an iPhone running on Verizon’s network. It’s reached a remarkable level, and now everyone is basically expecting an iPhone to show up on stage tomorrow. So while we wait, it looks like some Verizon employees haven’t had to — if the official Verizon Twitter account is any indicator, anyway.
As you can see in the image above, the tweet looks like any normal one. However, knowing that it’s officially from Verizon, and then seeing the line “via Twitter for iPhone” is kind of indicative of what we should (probably) expect tomorrow. Obviously nothing has been confirmed, as Verizon is keeping a tight lid on what’s to come. But we know that it’s going to be big. [via TechCrunch] |
News Corp’s “The Daily” iPad App Landing January 19th Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:05 AM PST The talk about News Corp’s The Daily application for the iPad has been a pretty constant piece of news for awhile now, with people guessing about the content therein, or trying to pinpoint the exact release date of the app. Others, though, didn’t even think it was coming out. But, thanks to a new “coming soon” site dedicated to The Daily, we can probably safely assume that it’s coming. And, according to Forbes, its launch date is only just a little off from that previous rumor we heard not too long ago.
While Forbes is reporting that The Daily will launch on January 19th now, further details about the application are still hazy at this point. We do know that the app will function as a sort of repository for news articles from many different sources across the United States. It will also include some international content. There are also writers that were specifically hired to write for The Daily, who will publish original content. What will be most notable about the app, though, is the push notification system that has been hinted at in the past. This is meant for a subscription plan, and not for notifications on the iPad. That means that iTunes will automatically bill customers, whether it be on a weekly or monthly schedule, depending on the individual user. If it comes to fruition, then there’s a possibility that magazines and other subscription-based periodicals could use the same system, and perhaps boost sales. And finally, The Daily now has a “coming soon” website, with a new logo which you can see above. [via Forbes] |
Silent Hill: Downpour is the Next Installment in the Series Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:41 AM PST The Silent Hill games are part of a long-running series from developer and publisher Konami. It’s a survival horror franchise that has seen releases on several different consoles over the year, but Konami has focused primarily on Sony’s home videogame console mostly, with a few divergents here and there. With the latest edition to the franchise, which is in development now, it marks the 8th title for Silent Hill, and it looks like rain is going to be playing a huge role in the upcoming title.
According to Game Informer, the next game will be titled Silent Hill: Downpour, and the developers are making sure that rain is an integral part of the game’s structure. And not just rain, but water in general, it seems. Details about the game are still sparse at the moment, but GI will have full details in their February edition of the magazine. In previous installments, the Silent Hill world has been invaded by a rust-covered version of the town, where the monsters and main antagonists of the franchise lurk. Fog has played a huge role in the games as well. Most recently, though, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories utilized snow and ice, instead of rust and broken down buildings to imagine Konami’s other world. It will be interesting to see how water might play into the nightmares of the main protagonist. [via Game Informer] |
Windows Phone 7 Performance Upgrade Demoed on Video Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:09 AM PST Microsoft has been open about their first update to Windows Phone 7, saying that the update would bring plenty of improvements to the mobile Operating System. What most people are waiting for is Copy & Paste, but Microsoft is also adding other flourishes to make sure that the package isn’t just a one-hit wonder. Namely, the update, which is build number 7.0.7353.0, also speeds up applications — especially the graphic-intensive games.
The demonstration below (filmed by Anandtech), which you can see in all of its video glory, showcases applications, mainly games, being loaded in two devices. The Samsung Taylor in question, of which one of them is loaded with the new software build of Windows Phone 7 (you’ll have to watch it to find out which one), is put against the same device running the older version of the mobile Operating System. Bejeweled manages to load up about 16.9 times faster than the same game opening on the previous version. The update, along with the updates mentioned above, is also meant to bring a better search experience to the Marketplace. However, the biggest question of all regarding the first software update for Microsoft’s newest mobile OS is when it’s coming, and that’s still not answered. So, check out the video, and if you have yourself a Windows Phone 7 handset, you’ll have to keep on waiting for that Copy & Paste update. [via WinRumors] |

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 09:35 AM PST There’s no doubt at this point that the Nexus S from Samsung, which out of the box runs Android’s latest version of Android (2.3), is a versatile device. We’ve already seen the handset boot up MeeGo, and now the developer is at it again. This time, though, we’ve got Ubuntu loading up on the device. The XDA developer forum member, stroughtonsmith — or Steven Troughton-Smith– has gone through the same method of bringing MeeGo to the device, but focusing his attention on Ubuntu this time around.
The Nexus S, while running the different Operating System, isn’t a perfect handset, and if you’re thinking about doing this, you should definitely not do it on your personal, every day device. stroughtonsmith points out that, as of right now, the touchscreen isn’t working. However, he says that is something to do with his kernel, and that it should be fixed soon. stroughtonsmith used the same Ubuntu image that was used in the HD2 process, but he used the same process to bring Ubuntu to the device that he used bringing MeeGo to the handset. Of course, there’s instructions through the source link below, and we shouldn’t have to say that you should be extremely careful when attempting anything like this, on any device. So tread carefully, if you do decide to step forward. [via XDA; thanks, Steven!] |
Verizon iPhone – An Analysis of the Major Questions Posted: 10 Jan 2011 09:30 AM PST Let me apologize in advance for writing yet another article about the Verizon iPhone. If the Verizon event tomorrow is actually the launch of an iPhone on Verizon's network I am personally very interested to the answers to several major questions that loom in my mind. The answers to these questions will be for me an indicator of the relationship between Apple and Verizon.
Will any Apple executive be on stage for any part of the presentation? I then changed my mind after a number of things happened. First was when I recalled the rumor we at SlashGear covered that morning highlighting employee blackouts at Verizon and Apple for the end of the month through February. Second was the Wall Street Journal article claiming the imminent release of the device at the end of January. The WSJ made this claim due to a highly trusted un-named source that confirmed the launch date of Jan 30th in Verizon stores. Third and the clincher for me was when no Gizmodo writer was invited in the face of the fact that they have not missed a Verizon event in the past three years. Now to the question I led off with. I am betting Steve Jobs will not be there, I will personally be shocked if he is. The next logical person is Phil Schiller and if no one is there I feel Apple's absence will say a great deal about their relationship with Verizon. More on that when this question gets answered. Will it have LTE? If it does in fact have LTE and the launch date is at the end of the month as has been reported, then the device may not be the first Verizon LTE device announced but it will be the first one available. Will there be a Verizon Logo on the device? What will it be named? Which then begs another series of questions about when Apple does bring out the "next" iPhone, meaning the latest and greatest. Questions like which network will it be available on? Will it be launched on both at the same time? If so, will those who bought this new Verizon device be severely disappointed that their iPhone is now outdated less then 6 months after they purchased it? Now, please keep in mind I could be completely wrong about all of this. Verizon may not even be launching an iPhone tomorrow. Even if they do, I could completely be overthinking this whole thing. So forgive me; I am an analyst by trade and at heart so I tend to do that sometimes. |
LG Revolution Hands-On [Video] Posted: 10 Jan 2011 09:30 AM PST One of the more overlooked phones that was announced at this year's CES was the LG Revolution. Being the first 4G handset from LG, the Revolution sports a large 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, Android 2.2, and dual cameras. One of the major focuses of the device is its ability to serve as a 4G wireless hotspot for up to 8 devices. Bringing 4G to the masses, the Revolution proved to be fast, but only "mid-grade fast." With our hands-on time with the LG device, we only saw a bit of lag. Maps didn't render as fast as they did on the Atrix or Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone, which is expected, but it still performed well. The device features a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, but compared to Samsung's we were definitely see a bit of a slowdown. Check out our hands-on with the device from the Verizon Press Conference. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
T-Mobile UK slashes data bundle, tells users to save video for home broadband Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:54 AM PST T-Mobile UK has prompted uproar among subscribers by slashing the bundled data it offers to 500MB from February 1 2011. According to the carrier’s announcement, “if you want to download, stream and watch video clips, save that stuff for your home broadband”; their 3G network is “best used for browsing.”
T-Mobile’s plans – and indeed the current offerings still listed on the carrier’s site – previously came with from 1GB to 3GB of included data on pay-monthly tariffs. The carrier’s new “fair use” policy slims that down to just 500MB, though if you exceed that “you won't be able to download, stream and watch video clips” but you will still be able to browse. It’s not clear whether this change in policy constitutes sufficient contract alteration that subscribers would be able to escape their agreements based on a significant change in provision. It’s also unclear whether T-Mobile will continue to bill their mobile data as “unlimited”. |
Palm Voice for Verizon Appears on Website, Features LTE Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:48 AM PST An interesting product page has popped up onto the Internet today, featuring a device that looks strikingly similar to a device that’s been available for quite some time now (but is no longer). We seem to be looking at a Palm Pre Plus for Verizon, and the specifications for the device listed here do indeed outline the handset in question. However, there’s a few key alterations in this product page that have us wondering if a mistake has been made, or if we’ve caught a glimpse of what we should expect to see at HP’s webOS special announcement.
The device is listed as the Palm Voice Test, on the rather official-looking product page. As for the subdomain “testman,” the same device appears as the Palm LTE Voice. While the 4G references are pretty clear, and it seems that Verizon is looking to launch a Palm/HP product with LTE on board, there’s no confirmation of this device existing. And, even more interesting, is that the specifications on the page don’t outline a sequel to the Palm Pre Plus — it describes the Pre Plus. There are obviously questions swirling around about the device shown above, along with the LTE references. While Verizon has an announcement to make on Tuesday (tomorrow), it seems pretty clear as to what device the majority of people believe will be announced. And it’s not the Palm Voice. However, HP’s event is in less than a month, where the device could certainly be announced. Stay tuned — it looks like things are about to get very interesting. [via PreCentral] |
OmniVision OV10810 10MP CMOS shoots 1080p HD & stills simultaneously Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:27 AM PST OmniVision has outed its latest mobile CMOS imaging sensor, the OV10810, offering 10-megapixel resolution stills and 1080p Full HD video capture for smartphone-scale devices. The OV10810 can manage HDR photography, full-resolution 30fps image capture, and the ability to shoot photos while simultaneously recording video.
Of course, there’s more to high quality photos than a huge number of megapixels: you also need a decent lens in front of that, too, if you don’t want to end up with a murky shots that look like you tried to take them in a nightclub. Still, as long as manufacturers bear that in mind, we’re glad to see more pixels (and pixels being used cleverly) in mobile devices. OmniVision is sampling the OV10810 CMOS now. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!] Press Release:

Verizon iPhone more expensive predicts analyst, missing the point completely Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:11 AM PST Verizon iPhone hyperbole continues, with the latest analyst angle being the potential price difference in UMTS and CDMA radios. J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has been crunching the numbers and is predicting that the Verizon iPhone could cost $20 to $30 more than its AT&T counterpart because of the more expensive components, according to Apple Insider.
The prediction seems bizarre, given Verizon is also expected to be offering unlimited data in an attempt to show up AT&T’s comparatively limited data caps. Following that path, but then slapping a surcharge on top of the handset for something mainstream customers aren’t likely to understand – the difference between CDMA and UMTS radios – doesn’t seem at all in keeping with Apple’s policies, and would be counter-intuitive to Verizon’s supposed strategy. More likely is that Verizon will stomach any extra wholesale handset costs itself, and push price parity with AT&T’s iPhone 4 models. $20 to $30 amortized over the course of a subscriber’s two year agreement is nothing in comparison to the ARPU they’ll be bringing in. |
Nintendo 3DS official accessories pictured Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:50 AM PST Details of the bundled accessories set to come with Nintendo’s 3DS have emerged, with Famitsu scoring graphics of the various bits & bobs that will come with the fast-approaching 3D handheld. The exact contents of the retail box have already been comfirmed, but now we can see the rather comically short USB charging cable Nintendo envisage (and which we’re guessing isn’t entirely indicative of what the final charger will look like).
There are also six “AR” (augmented reality) cards, which according to the (translated) description will be “reflecting the play outside the camera using the compatible software.” The charger stand is a nice touch, though, and something gamers will likely be making plenty of use of given Nintendo’s 3-5hr battery estimates. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [via Kotaku] |
Mindflex Duel pits brain against brain Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:40 AM PST Brain-monitoring mental agility game Mindflex has spawned a new version, Mindflex Dual, and as the name suggests it allows two players to go head to head and see who has the most powerful brain. Expected to ship on August 15, Mindflex Duel uses the same “mind-eye” concentration headbands as the original Mattel game, but allows you to battle it out against an opponents mental skills.
Various types of challenge are on offer, including collaborative modes for those less interested in competing, but all involve using the brain to guide a foam ball along the game area. Various slot-in obstacles can be fitted to add some extra challenge, or you can just play at virtual sumo, trying to push the ball into your opponent’s end-zone. It’s only a matter of time until someone rigs this up to an electroshock kit and turning it into a real-world equivalent of Domination from Never Say Never Again. Mattel Mindflex Duel is priced at $99.99. [via technabob] |
RIM told to turn off Indonesia mobile porn access or face web block Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:28 AM PST RIM is supposedly working with the Indonesian government on porn blocking technologies for BlackBerry smartphones, in an attempt to prevent XXX content being browsed by its mobile device users. According to BusinessWeek, RIM is in talks with domestic carriers to work out a “prompt, compliant filtering solution”; if they can’t do so by the government’s January 21 2011 deadline, the Canadian company faces legal action including a complete block on all BlackBerry web browsing.
According to Muhammad Budi Setyawan, director general of post and telecommunications at the Indonesian Communication and Information Technology Ministry, the filtering demands are not solely targeted at RIM but at the mobile industry in general. “If RIM agrees to filter, they may take two to three days to discuss or hold the meetings with the operators” Setyawan told BusinessWeek, but he went on to warn that “if they do not want to filter, we will ask RIM to close the browser service as a whole.” |
iPad wireless charger system just as fast as AC adapter Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:18 AM PST
That’s because the company has managed to increase its power output from a previous prototype, up to 10W like the standard iPad USB charger Apple supply with the iPad. A full re-juice takes 3-4hrs. The stand itself is an angled platform, and the iPad can be recharged no matter which way it’s stood. Murata won’t be selling a commercial version direct, instead looking to provide the tech to third-parties such as case manufacturers; they expect the wireless charging module to be priced at 1,000 yen ($12) when bought in 100,000 unit quantities. PlayStation Phone caught running PS1 ROMs on video Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:03 AM PST Video of the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone in action has been caught online, showing the XPERIA Play branded handset running a PS1 emulator and playing Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer. The clip, spotted by Edge Magazine, shows the unannounced smartphone loading an app called ROM Buddy and then playing titles from Sony’s original PlayStation console.
It’s unclear at this stage whether that’s functionality the shipping version of the XPERIA Play will actually support. Reports earlier from Chinese sites that acquired a PlayStation Phone prototype suggested they had been able to run a ROM emulator with some degree of success; this particular prototype could be doing just that, though Sony Ericsson’s plans for official gaming on the smartphone are likely to be more streamlined (and controlled). Still, it’s confirmation that the PlayStation Phone’s processor and GPU are up to the job, and that should come as good news to the homebrew community which is itching to get its hands on the device. We’re expecting Sony Ericsson to make the smartphone official at MWC 2011 next month. [via Android Community] |
Samsung promise new Galaxy Tabs & dual-core Super AMOLED Plus phones for MWC 2011 Posted: 10 Jan 2011 06:21 AM PST The dust is only just settling on CES 2011, but already Samsung has promised not only new smartphones but new Galaxy Tab tablet models at MWC 2011 next month. According to the Korea Herald, the new handsets will have dual-core processors, run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and pack the same Super AMOLED Plus displays as debuted on Verizon’s new Samsung 4G smartphone last week.
As for the tablets, the WSJ reports that the new slates are also headed to the Barcelona show in February. Samsung has been promising various Galaxy Tab models – spanning a range of sizes both smaller and larger than the first-gen 7-inch model – since IFA 2010 last year, though there’s no word on what new screen sizes will be offered. However, according to Samsung mobile exec Shin Jong-kyun, the new tablets will be based on “fourth generation technology” though it’s unclear whether he’s referring entirely to 4G connectivity. Samsung announced an updated first-gen Galaxy Tab for Verizon’s 4G LTE network last week. [via Android Community and via OLED-Info] |
Notion Ink Adam pre-orders suffer minor labeling delay? Posted: 10 Jan 2011 06:12 AM PST The first Notion Ink Adam tablet pre-order deliveries have apparently been delayed, with the company still waiting on final FCC and CE numbers before they can ship the slates out. SlashGear was forwarded a Notion Ink email from a pre-order customer, which claims that “the Holiday season in December pushed the administrative work and it will be cleared within this week.”
Notion Ink had previously said that FCC clearance was the final hoop before pre-order units could ship, and it seems the holidays have delayed the final silkscreen printing of the necessary approval codes onto the back of the Adam slates. It’s worth repeating that this isn’t an FCC approval delay, but just the final labeling required to make sure the hardware complies with regulations. We’re waiting on an official statement from Notion Ink regarding the delay, but for now it seems there are just a few more days to wait before Adam wings its way out to customers. For more on Adam, check out our hands-on report from CES 2011 last week complete with video of the innovative Eden UI and multitasking system. Have you received a delay email from Notion Ink? McIntosh clock looks like its audio gear and costs as much too Posted: 10 Jan 2011 06:11 AM PST Any audiophile will probably recognize the McIntosh name as the maker of some very expensive and high-end audio gear that has a very retro look to it. The company has announced a new clock for fans of its gear that has the same front styling as its other gear.
The clock is called the MCLK12 and it’s the front of one of the firm’s power amps with hours and minutes on the analog gauges. The gauges on audio gear would show the watts you were putting out and in the clock the left gauge is hours and the right side is minutes. If you are an audiophile, you might be thinking this would look great on your wall even if you can’t afford McIntosh audio gear. The problem is that this clock costs more than most audio gear does with a price of $2000. Via Dvice |
DisplayLink turns iPad into second display for computers Posted: 10 Jan 2011 06:00 AM PST DisplayLink has announced a new app for the iPad that turns the Apple tablet into a secondary screen for your display. This isn’t the first app for this type, but it's the first to come from DisplayLink App and it makes the iPad a secondary screen for Windows notebooks.
This is a great way to get more screen space on your notebook if you already own the iPad without having to purchase a new screen and makes it easy to take a second screen with you on the go too. The app is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP. DisplayLink says the app is not meant to be used for gaming. Running the app the iPad can operate in uncompressed Windows 7 Aero mode and the configuration for the app is done using the DisplayLink Windows graphics display. When the iPad is disconnected, the display will reposition automatically. The app is also very cheap; you can buy it now for $1.99. |
Apple follow AT&T with $49 iPhone 3GS deal Posted: 10 Jan 2011 05:48 AM PST
The discounting was believed to be a further stage in AT&T’s attempt to lock in subscribers with new two-year agreements ahead of what’s expected to be the official launch of the Verizon iPhone tomorrow. It’s unlikely that Apple would be making a Verizon-spec 3GS, so this official discounting is likely to be a move to shift old stock before the new CDMA device becomes official. |
