Is Facebook Shutting Down March 15 2011?

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 08:58 AM PST

No. Absolutely not. Anyone who says Facebook will be shutting down any time soon (or ever, for the rest of history and time,) is doing so because they’re misinformed or just for the hype of it.* This utterly false rumor is spreading through these internets like wildfire, catching sway apparently on Twitter and of course Facebook quickly. Would you like to know the source of this rumor? I bet you do. You’re gonna love it. Hint: it involves Bat Boy!

The internet is flipping out over the rumor that Facebook will be done and over starting March 15th, 2011. This story has gone so far as to reach Huffington Post, a sensationalist periodical in their own right. What everyone who didn’t take the time to do a quick search of the term “Facebook Shutting Down” and click a couple times haven’t realized is that the source of the rumor is none other than the OG of fake-news hype, Weekly World News.

This newspaper, now supposedly defunct (but their blog seems to be running just fine?) has been creating fake news since waaay before the Onion was ever conceived of. Images of drug dealers being sawed in half, young adults moving into nursing homes, Bat Boy making such an impact on the world as to be worthy of an off-Broadway play – wacky!

*But wait, Chris Burns, editor for SlashGear – isn’t the post I’m reading right this second all about hype as well? No. Dispelling a rumor isn’t the same as burning a fat one before breaking out the keyboard to create and speed up rumors that have no basis in reality. If this post gets hits, it’s because people are curious about the real truth in the matter, and they’ve found their way here, to the truth mill.

Take a peek at the original text of the WWN post that started a furious lol-fest:

PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.

"Facebook has gotten out of control," said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, "and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness."

Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

"After March 15th the whole website shuts down," said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. "So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won't be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business."

Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

"I personally don't think it's a big deal," he said in a private phone interview. "And to be honest, I think it's for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That's always a good thing."

"I don't care about the money," said Zuckerberg. "I just want my old life back."

The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

Well played, WWN, well played. Not that you (JB Smitts, the author of the article) had any idea that it’d be taken seriously since your whole brand is severely obviously false and comedic in nature. Well played anyway.

SlashGear Week in Review- Week 2 2011

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 07:56 AM PST

Welcome to the second edition of the Week in Review of 2011. This week was CES 2011 so we have tons of cool new gear to talk about. One of the coolest DIY projects I have ever seen is the Return of the Jedi lightsaber made by Bradley Lewis. He made the thing out of machined aluminum parts and it has a removable blade.

WallWizard showed off its new line of motorized wall mounts that have a cool iPhone app for control. The app allows you to control the mount from across the room using your iPhone. Angry Birds hit the PSP and PS3 consoles this week as a mini game. The game offers 63 levels and will land on other game consoles later in the year.

An interesting MID called the OCOSMOS OSC1 landed at CES. The tablet has an Intel Oak Trail processor inside along with a 5-inch touchscreen, a slide out keyboard and it runs Windows 7. I bet there are some of you out there that didn’t wake up on time last weekend thanks to the iPhone alarm bug. That bug was supposed to fix itself on January 3 and didn’t. We still don't know exactly what caused the alarm issue to start with.

AMD made its cool Fusion APUs official this week. These little gems pack in support for DirectX 11, 1080p HD, and 10 hours of battery life. Angry Birds for Windows Phone 7 won’t launch for months apparently. The game is on most other mobile platforms, is very popular, and has even made its way to some game consoles this week.

The Garmin StreetPilot app for the iPhone landed this week. The app is on the App Store right now for $39.99. The Tesla Model S and BMW vehicles are getting NVIDIA Tegra inside their vehicle infotainment systems. The Tegra chip will run the gauges and the large 12.1-inch touchscreen in the Tesla Model S.

50 Cent is the latest rapper to get in on the branded headphone market, but his set is much cooler than others I have seen. Fity calls his headphones the Sleek by 50 Cent and they have carbon fiber in the design. Asus went official with the EeePad Slider at CES. The tablet runs Android and has a cool slide out keyboard and a 10.1-inch screen.

We laid eyes on the cool Toshiba 3D TV at CES that needs no glasses. This is the sort of TV all people looking to go 3D have been waiting for. Toshiba says the set isn't ready for the market yet, and we agree, but the tech has some promise. Qualcomm purchased Athros this week for a massive $3.1 billion. the purchase will get Qualcomm into computing, networking, and consumer products in a big way and branch Qualcomm into some new categories.

We spent a bit of hands on time with the Notion Ink Adam at CES. We think the Adam is a very impressive Android tablet and its Eden UI is one of the coolest parts about the tablet. We also ran some benchmarks on the Adam at CES and some Flash testing. We loaded Quadrant Advanced on the Adam, it scored 1,836, and we point out that Froyo isn’t optimized for multithreading so real world performance will be different.

Samsung has unveiled a new Sliding PC 7 Series that looks interesting. The machine is a combination of a notebook and a mobile PC skirting the land between tablet and netbook. It runs Windows 7 and weighs in at 2.2 pounds with up to 64GB of storage, a 10.1-inch screen, and an Atom Z670 CPU at 1.66GHz. What appear to be parts for the Verizon iPhone have been spotted online. The parts could also be for the next iteration of the iPhone, but the Verizon version is more likely if these pics aren't fake.

Motorola has unveiled the Atrix 4G smartphone at CES hailed as the most powerful smartphone in the world. The thing is very impressive sounding on paper and is the first smartphone to ship with real RAM inside. Apple retail workers learned this week that there were no vacation days coming the last three weeks of January. This usually happens when new gear is coming and the Verizon iPhone is what is expected.

The Apple Mac App Store launched this week with about 1000 apps to start with. The store ended up moving a huge number of apps in the first few days it was available proving the store is very popular. Verizon went official with the HTC ThunderBolt smartphone. The device is the first LTE smartphone in the country and has nice specs like Android 2.2.1, 8GB of storage, and a microSD card slot with a single core 1GHz CPU.

JVC unveiled a cool new 3D camcorder at CES that records 3D in full 1080p resolution. It is the first camcorder for consumers to do 1080p 3D and it will cost you with a retail price a touch under $2000. A Chinese auction site has 50,000 stolen iTunes accounts up for auction with 12 hours of access offered to the accounts for about 15 cents here in the US. The site refuses to pull the auction until it gets an official request from Apple.

We ran into Mike Lazaridis at an event at CES and he whipped out the BlackBerry PlayBook and showed the thing off. We liked the bright and clear screen along with the capacitive controls in the bezel; the thing is pretty darn cool. Steve Jobs took only a buck in salary from Apple in 2010 according to documents filed by Cupertino. The board at Apple also asked for a clear succession policy for Steve is he was unable to continue at CEO of Apple.

Reports are coming in that the iPhone on Verizon may launch on February 3. That makes me wonder if the phone is coming on February 3, why the blocked vacation days for the three weeks in January? The Wall Street Journal has reported that the Verizon iPhone is going to launch on January 11. That fits in with the days workers can’t take off at Apple stores and makes that February 3 date more questionable.

After all the gear was unveiled at CES, the item voted best in show was the Motorola Xoom tablet. I admit the thing looks really cool with its Tegra 2 processor, HDMI output, 10-inch screen, and LTE data access. I want one. Thanks for reading this week’s edition, see you next time!

Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone Hands-On

Posted: 09 Jan 2011 12:25 AM PST

2011 is definitely the year of 4G, it seems everyone is getting 4G ready, and with the push comes an array of new smartphones and 4G connected devices. One of these phones, the Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone, was one of the most impressive and refined devices we got to handle at Verizon’s Press Event and we gave it the full hands-on treatment.

The Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone was definitely fast and super responsive. Movement through menus was fluid and Google Maps ran without any apparent lag. Coupled with Verizon’s ultra-fast 4G network, we saw pages load extremely fast and scrolling was incredibly smooth.

Still officially unnamed, the 4G LTE Smartphone will hit Verizon the first half of this year. Be sure to check out our hands-on video with the unit below.

Swiss Army Knife fits a 256GB Solid State Within

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 10:05 PM PST

It’s amazing how much storage can fit in such a small device. The original Swiss Army knife has been modified to include a 256GB solid state USB. It can either include other tools at the cost of gigabytes, or can include all the usual tools you normal find in a Swiss Army knife.

This flash drive is shock resistant as well as waterproof, so damaging this device will be a bit tougher than your average USB. The two options with knives are termed the Victorinox Slim and the Victorinox Slim Duo both with a capacity up to 128GB.

Tivizen Mobile Digital Telivision for Apple products now available

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 09:17 PM PST

Watching digital television on your portable Apple devices couldn’t be easier with the Tivizen digital television receiver. This is the first one ever made for the iPod and is completely wireless; just download the application from the app store and plug the dongle into the iPod.

It will support models iPod Touch models 2nd Generation and above, iPhone 3G/3GS/4, and the iPad. The dongle requires a USB micro AB for recharging and should operate for ~2.5 hours until a needed recharge. Because of the receiver has its own battery, it won’t leech all the power out of your portable device. The Tivizen dongle will be available for $99 within the next few months.

Motorola ATRIX 4G and Laptop Dock Hands On Demo [Video]

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 09:01 PM PST

Motorola says they have the most powerful smartphone around with the ATRIX 4G, and they’ve been showing it off at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show without hesitation. The device is feature-rich in of itself, but Motorola managed to throw in plenty of extras to sweeten the deal for potential customers. Including a laptop-like dock that allows owners to connect the device, and access the device with a keyboard, display, and mouse. We managed to get some hands-on time with the device, while Motorola demoed the handset and its main accessory.

The ATRIX 4G features a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen display, and a dual-core Tegra 2 processor under the hood. It’s running Android 2.2, and while it may not be the latest build of Android, it has plenty of extra features. First and foremost, the laptop dock. The device isn’t a full-featured laptop in any sense of the word. Namely, it’s just a screen (measuring 11.6-inches), a keyboard, and a mouse. It won’t do anything if an ATRIX 4G isn’t plugged into it, at the back of the dock.

Once we plugged the device in, we were escorted through the main features of the set-up. Accessing the phone’s features, like the separate homescreens, and even applications, is easy through the representation of the device on the dock’s display. You can launch and use some applications, like the Browser and even games.

The best part, though, is the usage of Firefox. This isn’t a mobile version of Firefox. It’s the full desktop version. And from what we could see of its usage in the demo, it works really well. The display is crisp, and rendering webpages is quick. Even Flash video loads up quickly, and we watched it play through without interruption.

There are even small flourishes, like window transitions, that making the dock worthwhile. Simply put, we were blown away by the performance a dock of this sort has, especially considering that a smartphone is running the entire show.

As for the ATRIX, it is snappy. Considering that Android 2.2 is the Operating System (OS) of choice, it’s not a deterrent from purchasing this phone at all. As of right now, with this demo as evidence, Motorola’s statement that the ATRIX 4G is the world’s most powerful smartphone may be true. Other features like the fingerprint sensor, which works as both security and the method to power on the device from sleep mode

Of course, the real test will come when we have the first review unit, and we can run the device through all of the necessary benchmarks. Until that day, go ahead and check out the video below, and let us know how you think the ATRIX 4G stacks up.

Samsung ST700 and PL170 Point and Shoot Cameras Hands-On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 08:14 PM PST

Not everything showcased at CES is high-end advanced user products, Samsung was also showing off their consumer-level point and shoot cameras at CES this year. Bringing in an all new universal UI, Samsung will focus not only on quality on their upcoming cameras, but also usability.

The new UI is obviously based on cell phone operating systems. Samsung is pushing heavy into the app market on their devices, first with their TV and Samsung Apps UI, and now with the consumer-grade point and shoot interfaces Samsung thinks it’s the best way for users to navigate around software.

On the showroom floor, we saw two of their upcoming devices – the ST700 and PL170. The ST700 boasts a 16 megapixel sensor, dual screens (3-inch touch-screen LCD on the back and 1.8-inch LCD on the front). Hitting the market in March, the device will sell for $279.99.

The PL170 is also a 16 megapixel camera and will be a more entry level camera when compared to the similar ST700. Sporting a 3-inch LCD and 1.5-inch front-facing LCD the device is very slim and lightweight all while feeling like a quality durable product. Also available in March, the PL170 will retail for $199.99.

Note: The PL170 we saw on the showroom floor did not have a front-facing LCD even though the Press Release and info sheet stated it should have. No word yet on whether it was just a prototype unit or the PL170 will just not feature a front-facing screen. But, it lacking a front-facing display would explain the price difference for two seemingly similar cameras.

BlueAnt S4 Car Speakerphone Hands On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 07:55 PM PST

Having one car speakerphone isn’t enough for BlueAnt. No, they’ve got to have options. That’s where the S4 “true handsfree” voice controlled car speakerphone comes in. Shown off at the company’s booth on the showroom floor at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the S4 is a bit more of a streamlined device.

The S4, much like the S3, is a voice-activated device that makes it easier for drivers to focus on driving, instead of having to worry about their phone. The S4 will also be able to call out who is calling, along with being able to read out text messages aloud. You will be able to listen to music, podcasts, or even turn-by-turn navigation from a GPS application.

What separates the two devices is the S4′s Microsoft BING integration, which gives the speakerphone a leg up with the ability to read out information. Bluetooth connectivity makes it easy for users to connect the S4 to an appropriate device.

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 05:52 PM PST

BlueAnt also shown off the T1 Rugged Bluetooth Headset with with wind armour technology. Offering up clear audio in wind speeds of up to 22mph, the device features the revolutionary technology for audio that we have yet to see in a bluetooth headset of its price-range.

The device sports dual microphones allowing for the selective audio cancellation that allows it to reduce background noise. Sporting a rugged design the T1 comes with many features as the Q2 such as the ability to read out text messages if your device supports it, listening to music, GPS turn-by-turn directions and podcasts, and has caller name announcing.

Available now, the BlueAnt T1 is on sale for $79.99.

BlueAnt Stereo Headphones Hands On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 05:39 PM PST

While we were impressed with the S3 Compact Bluetooth speakerphone, it was the over-the-ear headphones that got all of our attention pretty quickly. We managed to get some time with the headphones, testing them against the noise of the entire showroom floor at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and we walked away both surprised, and pleased.

The Bluetooth stereo headphones feature technology that, when we asked, went nameless that brings some pretty amazing “true to life” audio. The headphones are remarkably lightweight, thanks to the aluminum hardware. The ear-pads are made from leather, which helps with the comfort. The connectors inside the headphones are gold-plated, making sure that you always get high-fidelity sound.

The stereo headphones are designed specifically for Apple’s iPod line-up, as well as the iPhone. They feature a folding design as well, making it easy to carry. The two year replacement warranty is in full swing as well.

BlueAnt Q2 Bluetooth Voice Controlled Headset Hands-On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 05:36 PM PST

CES is just about wrapping up and we stopped by the BlueAnt booth to see what they have planned for 2011. BlueAnt always impresses, and it looks like their 2011 lineup will be no different bringing many new Bluetooth products to market. The first set we got to test was the Q2 Platinum which is the new finish for the Q2.

The headset was very durable and had an adequate amount of weight to it, without being too heavy, of course. The audio was crystal clear, and even on the showroom floor we could hear the other end of the conversation. Features include the ability to read out text messages if your device is supported, caller name announcement, and wind suppression up to 22mph with Wind Armour Technology.

The headsets are not only for calling. They will allow you to listen to audio from music, podcasts and mobile GPS turn-by-turn directions proving them to be an ultra-versitile headset. Available now, the Q2 retails for around $69.99.

BlueAnt S3 Compact Voice Answer Car Speakerphone Hands On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 05:30 PM PST

BlueAnt has managed to show up at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with plenty of devices to show off. Continuing their focus on Bluetooth headsets and other devices, the company was happy to showcase their new S3 Compact Voice Answer Car Speakerphone. It’s keeping with the compact design, but still packing in the features to make sure that potential customers are purchasing the device with everything inside.

With our hands-on time, the S3 device was pleasantly surprising in its construction. The device will still give you the ability to answer or reject phone calls with just your voice, and it has a simple, one-touch operation that will mean you’ll be able to keep your eyes where it’s important: the road.

It also comes packed with an advanced EQ, which delivers rich audio. When you receive a phone call, the little device announces who is calling, and there’s even a vibration sensor that will automatically connect your BlueAnt S3 Compact with your phone when you get into your car. The company pointed out their two year replacement warranty as well.

GOSCAM Explorer Premium Wireless Inspection Camera Hands On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 05:18 PM PST

Running through the labyrinth that is the showroom floor of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is a feat in of itself, but it makes it all worth it when you find something like the Explorer Premium Wireless Inspection camera. A device that, for all intents and purposes, could be used perfectly for a plumber, and with the aesthetic appeal of a hardware store enthusiast, the Explorer Premium is “Your Extended Eyes & Hands!”

While the hands part may be a bit overboard, the Explorer Premium does indeed give you the ability to see things in otherwise inaccessible locations. Whether that’s a pipe, or under a door frame and into the other side, the Explorer Premium can handle it. Featuring a 3.5-inch TFT LCD display (that isn’t a touchscreen), and the ability to use a microSD card to save your recorded video, the Explorer Premium is the perfect gadget for those who need to be able to see into tiny locations.

There’s a USB port on the side, and a video output. And the box comes with the device, the flexible tube, a hook, and a magnet — giving you the ability to hang the camera somewhere where you can easily see it.

Garmin Nuvi 3760T Hands On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 05:04 PM PST

With all of these tablet devices running around the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, we wanted to make sure that we found some time with a smaller tablet-like device. That’s when we ended up at the Garmin Nuvi booth, and found ourselves playing around with the 3760T.

Our hands on time with the device confirmed the idea that Garmin’s presence in the GPS navigation market is still a strong one. The company’s new device is certainly responsive, and we were able to find our way through the menus quickly, and without much effort. The 3760T is compact, and lightweight as well — perfect for the holder you’ll be sticking to your windshield.

Gold-Plated Xbox 360 Up for Grabs in Tournament of Champions by The Behemoth

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:59 PM PST

Even if you’re comparing the new slim-line Xbox 360, and the previous iterations, it doesn’t come close to the image that’s below. That’s a gold-plated Xbox 360 Elite, and it is currently the main prize for winning The Behemoth’s “Tournament of Champions.”

The studio is currently giving away a 24-karat gold-plated Xbox 360 Elite for the person who manages to make it to the top spot in the Castle Crashers Arena fighter on Xbox LIVE Arcade. There’s another themed Xbox 360, with the Castle Crashers on it, but that still pales in comparison to the gold 360 Elite. Oh, and if you happen to get in third place? See those strange looking chicken dolls? You’ll get 250 of those.

Soultra Solar Powered Sound System Hands-On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:53 PM PST

As we move into the technology age we are becoming more and more attached to our devices and would like to bring them more places. Soultra has helped with this want and has announced plans for their solar powered Soultra XL sound system.

Being an ultra-rugged and splashproof speaker system, the Soultra XL is ready to handle the elements while you enjoy your music outdoors. The device is powered by a lithium ion battery which is charged by a 72 square inch enhanced monocrystal solar panel.

Sporting 8 speaker drivers (2x tweeters, 2x woofers, and 4x passive radiators) the system was surprising loud all while being incredibly clear. Performance wise we were told that the system will take 5 hours to fully charge in the sun, which would yield 4 hours of playback.

Last year’s Soultra is available now for $200 and is a more compact solution with Aspen Green and Crimson Graphite colors coming soon. The Soultra XL will be shipping the second quarter of this year for an estimated retail of $300.

BOOX eReader Hands On

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:32 PM PST

Not many eReaders were on the show room floor at the Consumer Electronics Show, but we managed to find one, and while it may not be the number one eReader on the market, it’s certainly got the potential in there somewhere. Of course, without a name brand that folks can recognize, it may not rise to the top of the pack in record time. The BOOX M Series eReader device doesn’t slack on the features, at least.

The BOOX M Series eReader is running Android under the hood, but it looks like it’s Android 1.6 at best. The display measures in at 9.7-inches, and features a Vizplex display. There’s an 800MHz processor, and 4GB of Flash. It features USB 2.0, and there’s a microSD card slot that can be expanded to 32GB. A 3.5mm audio port means you can listen to your music while you’re reading. It has integrated WiFi, but no support for 3G. It has a 1600mAh rechargeable battery inside.

Technology that powers the devices we love so much has to find some limelight, and thanks to company MultiTouch, the tech that many of us use in our mobile devices every day had an entire wall to show off its grand design. The company was showing off four 32-inch displays, set up in an inter-connected fashion, where they were going through the motions of moving pictures with 10-point contact, and talking up the usefulness of a system such as this.

The large touchscreen “tables” were designed to be used like Surface, from Microsoft, but this is a lot thinner. What’s better, is that MultiTouch says that they could easily set up a large assortment of the displays, as a wall, and use it to let users interact with a huge, multitouch wall.

We played with it, and it certainly felt responsive. The multi-inputs were fun, in the sense that we got to move images around a large multitouch, interactive table. It’s good to see the technology advancing.

CES 2011: One of the Best

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:15 PM PST

This years CES marks my 12-year of attendance. I know for many people I associate with 12-yrs is nothing. For my father for example this is his 27th year attending CES.  I am however ready to declare this years CES one of the best and certainly the most exciting one I have ever attended.

The primary reason I am ready to declare this is simply because mobile devices are one of the hottest topics in the industry. At this year's CES there have been plenty of exciting and innovative mobile devices announced and demonstrated.

There really is no doubt that we are and probably have been at an inflection point in our industry. I predict that this year the number of worldwide smart phones shipped will surpass the number of desktop and notebook PC's shipped worldwide. This will be the first time a pocket computer ships in more volume than the traditional desktop and notebook PC we all know and love.

Mobile devices like cell phones and tablets, which are all the rage at this years CES, are devices that have high emotional attachment by consumers. These devices are some of the most personal devices any consumer can own. So it stands to reason that consumers are passionate about them thus generating a ton of excitement about all things mobile.

This years CES delivered on the promise of personal technology. We saw and got to play with the first dual core processor super phones. We saw Google's Android tablet specific operating system called Honeycomb and it impressed. And with Tablet's being all the rage we saw half a dozen, and counting, dual core tablets in all their glory.

For a gadget and specifically a mobile gadget freak like me this years CES was extremely exciting. As an industry analyst, all the interesting market developments that make studying this industry gratifying showed up at this years CES.  I even had the privilege to speak this year and keynote a session called Tablets: A New Era of Personal Computing.

My award for most exciting, interesting and cool product of this years CES is the Motorola Atrix 4G and its accessory ecosystem. The Motorola Atrix 4G is a dual core super phone running NVIDIA's Tegra 2 for a combined processing power of 2.0 ghz. And the coolest thing about this Motorola device is that the phone itself becomes a fully functional desktop and laptop computer with the notebook and desktop dock accessories.

This product opened my eyes to how a mobile pocket-able computer can potentially become the only computing device a consumer like me needs.

Haier Unveils Line of New WiFi-Enabled TVs at CES 2011

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 03:36 PM PST

For TVs, having a connection to the Internet, where users can access applications in some fashion or another, has been a big point at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. For Haier, which have officially unveiled a new line of Internet-connected TVs, it’s about the hardware as much as it is the partnership that they’ve developed with Yahoo!.

They’ve announced the partnership with Yahoo! at CES 2011, and outlined the plan to incorporate Yahoo! Connected TV into the new sets with built-in WiFi. The new units will be able to access 50,000 TV shows and movies, courtesy of Yahoo! Connected TV’s on-demand feature. It also means that the TVs will have access to Connected’s applications, which include YouTube, CBS, Twitter, and Facebook, amongst others.

The new TVs will also feature Netflix integrated, and the remotes will feature a Netflix button as well for easy access. However, the remotes with the Netflix button will only appear on the remote controls that ship with Haier’s upcoming Web-connected Blu-ray players. As of the time of this writing, the company has not said when the new TVs will be released, nor a price point for any unit.
