Video: Man Goes Medieval On Rat On The Subway

_Video: Man Goes Medieval On Rat On The Subway

This month, we've already seen two prime examples of how NYers react to rats on their subway: with nonchalance, or utter panic. Now rat-video king NYC The Blog is offering a third, much more primitive and cruel response to the mix: stomping on the rat. The video, taken by Vasily Zinchenko, is a vintage one made in 2008 on a D train near Grand Street station in Manhattan (but just uploaded yesterday to YouTube). Zinchenko's friend who was on the train with him, Uladzimir Taukachou, told NYC the Blog: "I saw how rat jumped in the train,. People were seating with their legs on seats. They were afraid that rat could bite them. Kids were so exited. It was fun." But be warned: a man in white shoes goes the ungentlemanly route, and furiously steps on the rat, seemingly killing it. Regardless, this is just further proof that it's the rats' city now, and we're just renting space in it. [MORE]

Joel Klein: Easier To Prosecute A Killer Than Fire A Teacher

Former Schools Chancellor Joel Klein may be making millions at News Corp. now, but he's still annoyed by NYC's byzantine process to fire teachers. He told the Sunday Times of London, "Five to 10 percent [of educators] are not remotely capable. It's easier to prosecute a capital-punishment case in the US than terminate an incompetent teacher." And of the United Federation of Teachers, he said, "The union is going to protect incompetent workers -- that is their job." ... [ MORE ]

Photos: Long-Eared Owl Chills Out On An AC Unit

Reader Suzanne Abbott sent us these beautiful photographs of an owl in Inwood, "This morning as I raised my window shade I was greeted by a Long-Eared Owl across the way. He has been there all day and I have spoken to the Park Rangers who said that these owls are very rare in New York and very skittish so it is unusual to see them up close like this."... [ MORE ]

Parking Dibs Are The Stuff Of Fights

Since we've already been blessed/damned by 56 inches of snow this winter (and it's not even February yet), we must continue our question about whether parking dibs—as in claiming a parking space on a public street that you've shoveled out for your car—are acceptable. While most of our readers think parking dibs are a joke, they clearly don't live in the heart of Parking Dibs land, Middle Village, Queens. After the Daily News found passionate parking dibs supporters there, WCBS 2 sent reporter John Slattery to the belly of the beast... and he found trash cans, traffic cones, and chairs reserving spaces.... Hit-And-Run Driver Who Struck Bicyclist Charged With DWI

Police charged a driver with a DWI, plus vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident, after he struck a delivery man on Friday night. Ricardo Gonzalez had been biking up Eighth Avenue when he was struck from behind by Clark Gettiner, who was in a Lexus. According to the Post, Gettinger, 40, "struck Gonzalez with so much force Friday night that he was thrown from his bike and skidded 20 feet down slush-soaked Eighth Avenue before ending up beneath a double-parked BMW."... Senator Schumer Wants To Ban "Bath Salts"

It was only a week ago that we first heard about the crazy new bath salts drug trend, but they're already being targeted by the man for permanent banishment. Senator Chuck Schumer announced a bill today to add the two active ingredients in the powders, mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV, to the list of federally controlled substances.... Georgi Vodka Owner Wants A Piece Of The Mets

Yesterday, the owners of the Mets, Fred and Jeff Wilpon, announced that they intended to sell part of the team, in order to offset a lawsuit brought upon their company because of their dealings with Bernie Madoff. By seeking to sell off 20-25 percent of the ball club, the Wilpons tacitly admitted how shaky things are financially for the Mets, who they said they want "to have the necessary resources to fully compete and win." And now we have our first serious bidder: Long Islander Martin Silver, liquor distributor and owner of the Georgi Vodka brand.... [ MORE ]

Update: BMW Trunk Victim In Coma, On Ventilator

Akeem Ajimotokan, the 33-year-old man who was found beaten, his ear nearly sliced off, and stuffed in the back of his own BMW, is still in critical condition today. According to NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, he is in a coma and breathing with the aid of a ventilator; his family members flew into NYC yesterday to see Ajimotokan, a lawyer who works at Columbia University. Police believe Ajimotokan was assualted by the BMW-obsessed Barion A. Blake, who answered an advertisement the victim had posted on the web offering to sell his car. ... [ MORE ]
