_Video: Cyclists Slam Proposed Bike License Law
Over the weekend, we spoke with young City Councilman Steve Ulrich (R-Queens), who is seriously proposing legislation that would require all cyclists over the age of 18 who use city streets to register with the city and affix IDs to their bikes. Ulrich told us, among other things, "This is the reality of the situation we're in, given the large number of people on bikes. And frankly, it's amazing this hasn't been passed already. The people on bicycles brought this on themselves by behaving this way." Meanwhile, ABC 7 was out on the streets getting reactions from diehard cyclists braving the frigid elements. But some of the cyclists they found might not be the best spokespersons for the anti-license side. [MORE]

Sen. Schumer Calls For "Rational Gun-Control Laws"

In the aftermath of last week's tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona, which left six people dead and 14 others injured during an apparent assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, much of the ensuing discussion has revolved around gun laws. After Mayor Bloomberg and Peter King called for stricter gun laws this week, Senator Charles Schumer wondered this morning how accused shooter Jared Lee Loughner, who was rejected for military service because of drug use, was able to buy a gun: ... _Ricky Gervais at the Globes: Too Much? Or Not Enough?

Ricky Gervais at the Globes: Too Much? Or Not Enough?

On last night's Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais delivered a number of his jokes—possibly closeted actors who are Scientologists, Hugh Hefner's fiancee waiting for him to die while pleasuring him, the alleged corruption at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which runs the awards)— to some awkward silences. On TV at least—at home we were laughing out loud. But comedy being relative, it looks like Gervais' performance (when he wasn't missing for half the telecast) split opinions all over. Where the Daily News thinks that Gervais is already "the front-runner for 2011's worst performance by an awards show host," others at Time his performance was hailed as the Hollywood version of Stephen Colbert at the White House Correspondents' Dinner (which, uh, seems a bit generous).... JETS DE-FEET PATS!!!

We're still picking our jaws off the ground, but they did it: the Jets just defeated the Patriots 28-21 in New England. They played a ferocious defensive game, and Pats QB Tom Brady never looked entirely comfortable. Bill Simmons of ESPN tweeted, "Outcoached, outplayed, outeverything. Congrats to the Jets." Sports writer Michael Weinreb tweeted, "An overzealous goofball has absconded with Tom Brady's birthright. This is his Winklevoss moment." And Dan Shanoff of Quickish wrote, "if you're going to talk, you better back it up. But if you can back it up, you have earned the right to talk all you want." We're excited to watch the post-game interview with Rex Ryan, for what is sure to be one of the greatest post-game interviews of all time.... [ MORE ]

The Social Network Nets Four Globes, Glee Gets Three

No rest for the weary, moments after the Jets de-feet of the Patriots the awards season run-up to the Oscars kicked off for reals when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave out the 2011 Golden Globes. The boozy Ricky Gervais-hosted show (well, except when he went missing for an hour of the telecast) had the usual, in the words of Robert Downey Jr., "mean spirited with sinister undertones" vibe, but that is sort of the point. Though things started off with a surprise Best Actress in a TV Drama win for Sons of Anarchy's Katey Segal, the the big winner of the night was The Social Network, which took home four awards—Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), Best Dirctor (David Fincher) and Best Drama.... Grande, Venti, Trenta? Starbucks Super Sizes Its Cups

We know, that almost sounds like an Onion headline (or an April Fools), but its true! After retooling its logo last month, Starbucks has announced plans to roll out a new, massive, 31-ounce "Trenta" cup size. Only available for iced coffee and tea drinks, the larger cups will run $.50 more than a Venti when it rolls out on May 3. Close 'bucks watchers shouldn't be surprised by this development though, they've been testing the cup in select markets since last March. But will the cups actually hold 31 ounces of fluid?... _2011 Golden Globes Fashion: Angelina Rules Again

2011 Golden Globes Fashion: Angelina Rules Again

Natalie Portman is the Golden girl of the moment, what with her win for Best Actress in a Drama for Black Swan. But the reception to her pale pink Viktor & Rolf gown is more mixed: Style.com said it was "ravishing" but the Fug Girls said, "Portman's pink sheath is Grecian in its draping, with a large red flower between her boobs. In the end, it's a bit of a wah-waaah moment... the more we look at it, the less we are endeared." If anything, it's the surprisingly-nominated Angelina Jolie who stole the show in a green sequined Versace gown. ... [ MORE ]
