The NYPD is making good on its promise to crackdown on cyclists who ride through red lights, go the wrong way on streets, or pedal on sidewalks. The Post reports that cops handed out nearly 1,000 tickets to bicyclists in Manhattan in the first two weeks of January. 315 were issued in Brooklyn and 167 were written for cyclists in Queens. "It's an all-time high," one high-ranking source told the tabloid, while another NYPD source says, "I think the moral of the story is it's not just obey the rules of the road, but to utilize the bike lanes and safety first." Speaking of bike lanes, two City Councilmen from Staten Island are joining forces to try and stop their rapid expansion. Heck, is there even a Pimp Squad arm of the Finest anymore? The AP reports that New York City's edge-factor is disappearing, noting the deaths of CBGBs, Coney Island's Shoot the Freak, and Off-Track Betting as some of the big losses. Are we doomed to become a metropolis filled with Starbucks and big box stores? The once seedy Times Square has now literally become Disney-fied, and the AP notes: "the weird, unexpected, edgy, grimy New York—the town that so many looked to for so long as a relief from cookie-cutter America—has evolved into something else entirely: tamed, prepackaged, even predictable."... [ MORE ] |  | Real estate website Trulia conducted a study (based on information on its own site) about where it's more affordable to rent or buy in the top U.S. cities—and, surprise, surprise, New York City takes top honors for being more affordable to rent than buy. According to Trulia, the median list price (for the top 50 cities) is $140,201.37, but the median price for a 2-bedroom apartment in NYC is $1.3-1.4 million! Median rent (for the top 50 cities) is $1,871.65, but it's $3500-4000 in NYC for a 2-bedroom apartment. ... The Board of Trustees will meet today to vote on a plan to prohibit smoking from all 23 CUNY campuses; currently smoking is only banned inside buildings and CUNY vehicles. In addition, all tobacco industry promotions, advertising, marketing, and distribution would be prohibited on campus properties, and tobacco industry sponsorship of athletic events and athletes would be prohibited.
