A few days ago City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Queens) lamented that he's "never, never seen a cop car pull over a bicyclist for running through a red light. I wish they would, because those are the ones who are creating problems every day in the city." Well, it looks like Ulrich's wish has come true: for the second time this month, a cyclist in Central Park has been shocked to find cops pulling him over for running a red light. Today's report comes from composer Alec Hall, who tells us he, along with another cyclist, got caught in a dragnet in the park yesterday: [ MORE] | Consider your shiny new $104 MetroCard your express pass to... poor health. Yep, it's one more reason to hate the MTA and consider becoming a bike commuter. According to a new British study, public transit riders are six times more likely to suffer from acute respiratory infections. Only take the subway sometimes? Well occasional riders aren't safe either, in fact the study showed they are most at risk. Those who ride public transit everyday may build up an immunity to viruses, making the occasional straphanger the one to get sick more often.... [ MORE ] | | If you've been in one of our major train stations in the past few months you've probably seen them and thought "WTF?" Y'know what we're talking about: police officers in bike helmets riding souped-up three-wheeled scooters in circles. Does it it help that nobody really seems to have a good argument for the mall cop-style transports, called T3 electric standup vehicles? No? Oh well. The NYPD is now the proud owner of 29 of them.... Maddow has been covering the increased debate on gun control in the wake of the Tuscon massacre, and her guest was activist filmmaker Michael Moore, who asked the same difficult question that perplexed him in his smash hit 2002 documentary (which won an Academy Award): Why are Americans so trigger happy? The interview began with that stunning segment from Moore's film wherein K-Mart reps meet with two Columbine High massacre victims, whose presence persuades the company to stop selling handgun ammunition.... Gabrielle Giffords and since releasing her "blood libel" video statement. And guess what—she's still upset at the lamestream media! Palin said, "They're not going to shut me up. They're not going to shut you up or Rush or Mark Levin or Tea Party patriots or those who, as I say, respectfully and patriotically petition their government for change." But former George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum said on (lamestream) MSNBC, "She should stop talking now.” ... [ MORE ] | | Today the tabloids lob post-Blizzageddon snowballs at their respective targets; the Daily News at Mayor Bloomberg and the Post at NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. According to the News, Bloomberg has declined to send Sanitation Department reps to perform at the City Council's touring political theater production about his administration's response to last month's blizzard. Instead, the role of Commissioner John Doherty will be played by understudies from Community Affairs, who are supposedly "equipped" to answer questions during the exciting "audience participation" part of the show. Now costar and Council Sanitation Committee Chairwoman Letitia James is "fuming."... [ MORE ] | | |
