Bicyclist Killed ON the BQE

_Bicyclist Killed ON the BQE
We received reports this morning that a cyclist was fatally hit by a car in a hit and run around 4:30 a.m. near the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp to the BQE, and now WABC is reporting that the cyclist was actually riding ON the BQE. The NYPD could not confirm any details to us at this time, but WABC says the unidentified male victim was hit in the westbound lanes of the BQE by a vehicle that drove away. The cyclist was then hit by a second vehicle and pinned underneath until first responders could get him out. That second driver stayed at the scene, and EMTs rushed the victim to Long Island College Hospital. [MORE]

_Prospect Park West Bike Lane Study All But Locks in Lanes

Prospect Park West Bike Lane Study All But Locks in Lanes

The DOT's report on the impact of the controversial Prospect Park West bike lane is so overwhelmingly positive that it's difficult to see how the bike lane opponents can win this one. The bike lane, which was installed in June 2010, is still technically a pilot program, but the DOT's study all but assures its permanence. According to the DOT, speeding has been dramatically reduced on the former drag strip that was Prospect Park West, injuries and accidents are down, and despite the fears voiced by some local residents, there has not been a single reported pedestrian injury from a pedestrian-bike crash. ... Note: Don't Call Emergency Locksmiths Late At Night

The Awl points us in the direction of blogger Caroline, and the sad, all-too-typical story of her experience with an emergency locksmith one late night. Caroline called an emergency locksmith at 1 a.m. when she couldn't get into her apartment, and was handed an exorbitant $613 bill, which he demanded she pay in cash on the spot. We can attest to the ridiculous pricing, since we had a similar experience last Fourth of July (the price goes up even higher on holidays, of course). But after Caroline called the locksmith's bluff about bringing in the cops, what happened next is a bit surprising: by her account, the officer who arrived treated her like shit.... [ MORE ]

Abortion Doctor Charged With Killing 7 Babies, One Adult

Gosnell, whose Women's Medical Society practice served lower income, minority women, is not a licensed OB/GYN and had his unlicensed staff (including a teenager) administer drugs to patients, according to the Philadelphia DA's office. The DA's office investigated the family practitioner after drug agents who raided the practice found out a patient had a fatal heart attack after being given a lethal dose of narcotics. ... [ MORE ]
_Is Your Subway Hot, Or Not?

Is Your Subway Hot, Or Not?

Which subway line is carrying around the man/woman of your dreams? Where are the city's hottest commuters? Refinery29 recently sent out photographer Angela Pham to document how the lines are lookin' these days. In a three week time span, Pham snapped shots of 80 commuters, and now the site has posted a gallery of the 36 hottest: almost all riding the N/R, L, and F lines. This "study" seems a bit hipster-centric, and may need a broader scope—but as it stands, how does your line measure up?... [ MORE ]

MTV Now Worried Skins Shows Too Much Underage Skin

We have yet to watch Skins, MTV's latest, since we're worried it'll ruin the excellent British original for us (and we hear it is basically a carbon copy, anyway). But no matter, MTV is happy these days since 3.3 million people did tune into the show's premiere on Monday. Well, except for the part where they are suddenly worried the sight of a 17-year-old boy's bare bottom running down a street in an upcoming episode might be construed as child pornography. ... _N and Q Service Suspended Because of Person on Tracks

N and Q Service Suspended Because of Person on Tracks

[UPDATE BELOW] For the second time in 24 hours, subway service has been snarled by someone on the tracks. Last night we received reports that first responders were rescuing someone on the 1/2/3 tracks at 34th Street; the unidentified person had a leg injury but wasn't trapped under the train. This morning, N and Q service has been temporarily suspended between Queensboro Plaza & 57th St/7th Avenue because of someone stuck under the train with unspecified injuries. We've just received word that EMS has rescued the victim, and we'll update when we know more, but stay tuned to @NYCTSubwayscoop for breaking updates on train service. ... [ MORE ]

Code Red: o.b. Tampon Shortage Continues (Allegedly!)

As we enter Day Whatever of this non-applicator tampon drought, things are turning ugly. According to the Daily News there are bidding wars on eBay, turning o.b. brand loyalists against each other. As we noted yesterday, Johnson & Johnson had a "temporary supply interruption" (whatever that means) which has led to their product being out of stock in many places... though we found a few boxes at Bridge Apothecary in DUMBO this week....
