Alabama Girl Dreams Of 1-Bedroom in Brooklyn

_Alabama Girl Dreams Of 1-Bedroom in Brooklyn
A girl in Montgomery, Alabama is currently saving up to move to Brooklyn, New York... and she could use a few bucks. Laura Zamora is an art-school grad and printmaker, and has decided to accelerate her stalled plans by setting up an Etsy page asking for donations so she can get out of dodge (specifically, her dad's place). Video: Markowitz Says Activist Cyclists Distorted PPW Study

Back in April, as the Prospect Park Bike Lane war raged in Park Slope, bike lane hating Borough President Marty Markowitz told WNYC that if the new bike lane "causes no bottlenecks, no inconvenience, and if it works, I’ll be the first to say I was wrong." A new report on the bike lane's impact proved just that, but instead of eating his shoe, Markowitz is getting conspiratorial. In an angry, unhinged interview with WCBS, Markowitz contends that cycling activists were secretly tipped off about which days the DOT contractor was counting bike riders, enabling them to flood the lane to skew the stats. Watch him expose what Streetsblog dubs a "vast biking conspiracy."... [ MORE ]
_Video: Teens Gone Wild at Wendy's

Video: Teens Gone Wild at Wendy's

Today's depressing reminder of our civilization's gurgling downward spiral comes to us via a YouTube video (where else?) of teenagers (of course) attacking a Wendy's employee who tried to break up a fight in Queens Village. Our narrator is a teenage girl—another orphan of a bankrupt culture who thinks she's 50 Cent—who yells, "Wendy's lady, move!" But the Wendy's lady does not move, and after someone throws some food at her, she's pummeled by at least two of the girls.... [ MORE ]

Pedestrian Killed By Truck Driver With Suspended License

Yesterday at around 5:40 p.m., a woman crossing an Upper East Side street was struck by a private garbage truck driver. And it turns out the driver had a suspended license. Laurence Renard, a 35-year-old fashion stylist, was crossing First Avenue at 90th Street "when the truck took a sharp left and smashed into her with such force that her body was severed,"according to the Post's sources. ... Map: U.S. of Shame Map Calls Out NY For Worst Commute

The truth hurts, so we're just gonna come out and say it: New York is the worst at something. Turns out we have the longest average daily commute (which we knew already)... and big deal, right? So we have to sit on the subway a little bit longer—it gives us time to catch up on this week's New Yorker, which is why we aren't the the dumbest state (hello, Maine). According to Pleated Jeans, every state has a statistical skeleton in their closet, and now they've put them all into a Unites States of Shame map. At least we aren't known for our porn usage, ugliness, gonorrhea, or bestiality. Way to go New York! See you on the late, overcrowded, overpriced subway later.... [ MORE ]
_Next MTA Fare Hike Could Dwarf Last Fare Hike

Next MTA Fare Hike Could Dwarf Last Fare Hike

The MTA's chief financial officer painted a dire, depressing picture of the future yesterday. Speaking to the Finance Committee, Bob Foran estimated that because of ballooning debt, the MTA may have no choice but to raise subway and bus fares by approximately four-and-a-half times the last fare increase, Reuters reports. The problem, as Second Avenue Sagas elucidates, is that the MTA has to spend more and more money maintaining its aging infrastructure, and that investment, unlike expansion projects, doesn't lead to any increased revenue. ... _Bloomberg and DOT Booed Over Bike Lanes

Bloomberg and DOT Booed Over Bike Lanes

A group of angry Queens residents booed a DOT representative and Mayor Bloomberg at a community meeting in the Rockaways last night, according to accounts in the Daily News and the Post. The jeers erupted after one local resident asked the DOT to get rid of the bike lanes that were installed last summer on the main thoroughfare of Beach Channel Drive. The response from Maura McCarthy, the DOT’s Queens Borough Commissioner, didn't go over too well. ... [ MORE ]
_Man Arrested For Driving His Own Car

Man Arrested For Driving His Own Car

Jamieson Prince of the Bronx is suing the NYPD for $1 million after he was arrested for "stealing" his own car in November. Cops allegedly cuffed Prince as he was getting ready to drive his daughters to school in his 2007 GMC Yukon, and would not listen to him when he said he had papers proving ownership. Here's how the mixup went down.... [ MORE ]
