Mystery HTC leaks: Incredible HD aka Mecha?

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:30 PM PST

Mystery today, as what looks to be a hitherto-unseen HTC smartphone emerges courtesy of a new tipster. The handset – only the bezel of which, together with a section of the rear panel including the camera and a dual-LED flash – is unnamed and we don’t yet know whether it runs Android or Windows Phone 7.

Update: It’s been suggested this is the HTC Incredible HD, aka the HTC Mecha, in which case we could be looking at a 4G LTE device.

What we can say is that it doesn’t tally with any of HTC’s other recent devices, as far as we can tell. The fascia is most like the Nexus One, but appears to be finished in a chromed metal rather than the Google-phone’s metallic grey, while the dual-LED flash on the rear doesn’t look to line up with that of the Desire, Desire HD or any other known handset.

So, new Android device or Windows Phone 7 smartphone leaking ahead of CES 2011 or MWC 2011? Could well be – this is certainly the time for HTC to be testing handsets ahead of the company’s refreshed range in Q1 2011 – but we’ll have to wait for more information before we know anything for certain.

Lonely Planet Gives Several City Guide Apps Away Free During 2010 Holiday Season

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 01:48 PM PST

If you’ve ever traveled outside of your own country (or state or city for that matter), you know the importance of the most important tool you can have: the city guide. I personally have gone through a few cities overseas with nothing but a map, a backpack full of scraps of paper, and my wallet, but once I had the chance to grab a city guide booklet (this was back before smartphones), my whole experience changed. Flash forward to today when we’ve got these tiny screens we can keep in our pockets, and Lonely Planet has a collection of city guides you can grab and keep handy at the flick of the finger! And what’s the big news today? Lonely Planet is giving away a batch of big cities away during this holiday season, totally freaking free of charge!

This bag o’ apps includes Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, London, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Prague, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Vienna and Warsaw, and on December 23rd also the home of the guides: Amsterdam – this day is also the last of the free offer. Usually these each would cost $5.99 in the app store, so grab them all now, instantly!

Unnamed Sony VAIO tablet PC Found at FCC

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 01:07 PM PST

A VAIO Business Group representative has filed a Sony tablet PC today at the FCC, and it’s totally full of mystery. Facts known about the tablet thus far are that it connects through WiFi-only with 802.11b/g plus single band n, it comes with several model numbers: PCG-31211L, PCG-31311L, PCG-312xxL meaning it could be released in different colors, with different specs, basically anything. The rest of the details are set to be released on January 20th, which is right past the dates of CES 2010 (Jan 6-9) which is a good indicator it might be previewed there.

Looks spectacular doesn’t it? Sometimes its just painful to report on pieces of technology sliding their way through the FCC, searching for patents, etc, because I know, we know, that this just gets your tastebuds all bumping and your glands all salivating. Maybe have a candy bar while you wait?

iPad is the New Christ

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:55 PM PST

Or at least that’s what the folks at One More Thing are saying, in a way, in a totally fun way, might I add, as they’ve here created for the world an all-apple Nativity Scene (aka Christmas Creche) for you to print out and set up for yourself. You’ll find all your favorites here illustrated to witness the holy birth of the iPad. God, forgive them for their sin (if you would consider such a thing a sin,) as this is totally a bunch of fun and in no way takes away from the fun of your son’s birthday party.

In the scene you’ll find Jonathan Ive, Tim Cook, and Phil Schiller as three shepards, pundits David Pogue, Walt Mossberg, and John Gruber as the three wise men, and of course Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak on a segway as Mary and Joseph. With a little baby Jesus – I mean iPad in the center! Behind all of this you’ll find the manger had been transformed into an Apple store, the Genius Bar right in the center under the guiding starlight of the Apple logo. Merry Apple!

Amazon Likely to Break 8 Million Kindle Units Sold This Year

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:40 PM PST

And that’s a LOT. Not really the most a pad-type piece of tech has sold, compared to Apple’s 4.5 million iPads sold PER QUARTER this year (according to Tech CNN), but heck! It’s up there! And it’s over 60 percent more than analysts projected on Bloomberg. Business Week’s spoken with two sources “aware of the company’s sales projections” who say that compared to last year’s 2.4 million Kindles, their figures for this year are monstrous. Bloomberg estimated, on average, that Amazon would sell 5 million Kindles in 2010.

Quite a varied group of analysts are still suggesting that Amazon will sell a number closer to 5 million Kindles this year: Citigroup, Barclays Capital, BGC Partners LP and ThinkEquity LLC. Close to these are Caris & Co. predicting 4.8 million, and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. are deciding to be that one guy on The Price is Right calling it somewhere between 4 and 5 million.

The only mathematical figure released by Amazon itself has been a report back in October (2010) which said that the new lighter, faster Kindles released in July had surpassed their total sales in the fourth quarter of 2009, the busiest time of the year for sales. It may be important to note that Barnes & Noble and Sony don’t release numbers for their e-reader sales either. I think they’re all just shy.

FCC Net Neutrality Vote Commented on by Verizon, Steve Wozniak, and More

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 12:01 PM PST

As you might already know, the FCC Federal Communications Commission has adopted the “Open Internet Order,” what some are saying is Net Neutrality – and others are saying is no such thing. The regulations adopted an Order that bans content blocking, requires transparency from ISPs, requires that network management and packet discrimination be “reasonable.” Wireless broadband is exempt from all but the transparency and blocking rules. “Managed services” that are delivered over a last-mile broadband pipe will be allowed but monitored for “anti-competitive behavior.” This move has been commented on by a slew of voices from all bits and pieces of life, check out a few of the more pertinent ones below. *Watch out for the Woz!

*Image from ArsTechnica.

First lets hear from Media Access Project, aka MAP:

“MAP respects and admires the work of Commissioners Michael J. Copps and Mignon Clyburn on this important issue, but MAP cannot support the watered-down, loophole-ridden option that the FCC appears to have chosen. The inadequate protections for wireless technologies are especially troublesome, as wireless services provide an onramp to the Internet for many of the nation’s poor and minority citizens.”

Next up is Verizon, who sent out a press release today:

Although we share with the FCC the overarching goals of an open Internet, we are deeply concerned by today’s 3-2 decision.  The FCC’s majority breaks with years of bipartisan communications policies that recognized that Internet innovation and investment – and the jobs they create – thrive without government intervention. There is no doubt that the policies put in place by the Clinton Administration and the Bush Administration to jumpstart innovation and the spread of broadband worked.  As a result, America’s broadband and Internet marketplace is intensely competitive and an engine of economic growth, job creation and multibillion-dollar investment. Today’s decision, however, unnecessarily departs from these successful policies.

After that, Timothy Karr who is a Campaign Director at Free Press and SaveTheInternet.com:

The rule is so riddled with loopholes that it’s become clear that this FCC chairman crafted it with the sole purpose of winning the endorsement of AT&T and cable lobbyists, and not defending the interests of the tens of millions of Internet users. … For the first time in history of telecommunications law the FCC has given its stamp of approval to online discrimination.

Finally, the wise wizard, your friend and mine, co-founder of Apple and the coolest Santa-looking technology voice in the world, Steve Wozniak:

I was also taught that space, and the moon, were free and open. Nobody owned them. No country owned them. I loved this concept of the purest things in the universe being unowned.

The early Internet was so accidental, it also was free and open in this sense. The Internet has become as important as anything man has ever created. But those freedoms are being chipped away. Please, I beg you, open your senses to the will of the people to keep the Internet as free as possible. Local ISP’s should provide connection to the Internet but then it should be treated as though you own those wires and can choose what to do with them when and how you want to, as long as you don’t destruct them. I don’t want to feel that whichever content supplier had the best government connections or paid the most money determined what I can watch and for how much. This is the monopolistic approach and not representative of a truly free market in the case of today’s Internet.

We have very few government agencies that the populace views as looking out for them, the people. The FCC is one of these agencies that is still wearing a white hat. Not only is current action on Net Neutrality one of the most important times ever for the FCC, it’s probably the most momentous and watched action of any government agency in memorable times in terms of setting our perception of whether the government represents the wealthy powers or the average citizen, of whether the government is good or is bad. This decision is important far beyond the domain of the FCC itself.

Feel free to leave your own comment below with fire or ice OR contact FCC to get wild or congratulate them on their work. The internet belong to us!

PalmPad Tablet on the Horizon from HP, New WebOS Inside, Hardware Like iPad

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 11:32 AM PST

Everyone’s favorite news source FoxNews.com has obtained a spec sheet for a forthcoming PalmTablet today from “a trusted source.” They’ve revealed that HP will introduce three models of a PalmPad at CES at the beginning of 2011, each of them with only minor hardware differences inside. Each of these tablets will run WebOS 2.5.1 and will represent a sort of spin-off of the magical mystical never-saw-daylight HP Slate. Also included in this upcoming series will be a fourth tablet (that won’t be seen at CES) but will be “custom made for university students to prove how versatile the machines can be.”

This fabulous new PalmPad is set to work on Sprint’s “4G” network and has a set of hardware specs “nearly identical” to the Apple iPad. Tiny differences include an HDMI port instead of the universally Apple port the iPad features, a slightly thinner overall size, rounder sides, 1.25 pounds in weight, and a USB 3.0 port as well as a “multi-switch” like the one featured on the Palm Pre.

The PalmPad is set to feature front and rear-facing cameras with LED flashes at 1.3 and 3 megapixels. Each of the three CES-released versions will have a screen right around 9.7-inches while the university version is set to have a 8.9-inch screen. The university version will have complete access to the univerity’s internal educational software set, university requested features, and HP hopes they’ll be in use by Fall semester 2011 (lofty goal?)

Don’t forget to head on over to http://webosforums.com/ and chat it out as WebOS continues its ascent into superstardom and the taking over of the world written in its destiny!

Motorola Starts Countdown until Tablet, says “Ready to Skip a Generation?”

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 09:56 AM PST

Remember yesterday when Motorola was talking smack about the iPad and Galaxy Tab? Oh dang that was hardcore. Today they’ve taken the next step and put up a countdown on their site, marking today to be just 15 days away from the unveiling of their product. And what’s more, they’ve got a place where you can sign up to get updates on the product that includes a place for your mobile phone number – watch out for infinite texts forever.

What does “Ready to Skip a Generation” mean? Could it mean they’re skipping over Android 2.3 and going straight to 3 (which could very well be Honeycomb?) Who can tell?

Israeli Hospital Using Apple iPad to Help Treat Patients with Help of Microsoft’s Chameleon

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 09:14 AM PST

Mayanei Hayeshua Medical Center is said today to be the first hospital to use the iPad to interact with Microsoft’s Chameleon software for use in hospitals. Dr Yoram Liwer, chief executive of Mayanei Hayeshua, spoke with Reuters on the matter, saying they’ve now got access to the same program and database they’d have on their computers now on their iPads, working in a much more mobile manner: “The patients’ data are in the computer … so physicians who are out of hospital but on call can see X-rays and ultrasounds through their iPad and give more intelligent advice to staff in the hospital.”

A good example of how the iPad is being used happened recently when a patient arrived at the emergency room with a broken hip. The senior orthopedic surgeon was not in the hospital and a full hip replacement was needed, so the doctor on duty contacted the OS sending X-rays and CT scans which he (or she) could view with the iPad. The OS was able to respond immediately, offering advice on how they should move forward, then again he (or she) was able to follow up right after the surgery’s results were sent out.

Liwer continued, “The high resolution of the screens enables good viewing of the X-rays and also the iPad is fun to work with. People like to carry it with them wherever they go. They don’t take a laptop but the iPad is with them all the time so we get better and more intelligent consulting.” Well played.

Two Top-Down Monster Murdering Apps Applying for Mac App Store Acceptance Soon

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 09:01 AM PST

Whooo doggy these games look fun. Gameprom, the group of designers that created my all-time very favorite app SLAYER Pinball Rocks has released a couple of videos teasing at the release of a couple of massive mayhem games for the Apple App Store. First there’s Crimsonworld, a fabulously fast-moving game where you’re a robot in an alien environment where every monster you see wants to destroy you – murder them! Then there’s Magnetar, a space scroller along the lines of all your favorite overhead airplane war adventures.

They’re calling Crimsonworld a “Doom-style bloody mess with a top-down view.” That sounds right up my alley! Looks like there’s probably no chainsaw, which is regrettable (lol), but WOW does this look fun.

Magnetar seems like a relatively short game (5 unique worlds with 4 levels in each of them with 5 bosses,) but LOOK at it! It’s bright and fabulously layered. Can’t wait to play it.

Tegra 2 Isn’t Enough

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 08:45 AM PST

It’s easy to get swept up in the hardware race. Several years ago it was PCs and then notebooks; now it’s smartphones and tablets chomping at the bit to clash spec sheets. CES 2011 is expected to bring dual-core mobile CPUs to the fore, with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 cropping up inside devices like the LG Optimus 2X and slates including Notion Ink‘s much-anticipated Adam. Yet, despite the hype, it’s finally dawning that Tegra 2 – or, indeed, any of the new dual-core chips – isn’t enough.

Speed alone isn’t sufficient for a good mobile device experience; you need the software to back it up and make the most of it, and right now that’s where many gadgets are falling short. Viewsonic’s underwhelming “user experience” saw it yanked from Staples shelves this weekend, echoing the Toshiba Folio 100′s fall from grace in the UK last month over a similarly buggy implementation of Android. Our time with the Advent Vega, meanwhile, showed that while you can have a bulging spec sheet and a relatively tiny price tag, the software is equally important if you want a device that’s impressive beyond mere benchmark results. Toshiba’s AC100 is another good example of how dual-core on its own isn’t enough to make a good product.

Take then, for example, the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Dismissed by many as overpriced, a smaller – later – rival for the iPad crown, Samsung has nonetheless seen impressive sales figures for its 7-inch tablet. You have to be offering something special to charge roughly double what the white-box Android slates are going for, and Samsung’s magic seems to be its custom software. Rather than slapping on Android and relying on the Google brand halo to carry the Tab, the Korean company’s software engineers took the time to deliver unique calendar, contacts and other apps suited to the screen size and resolution.

It’s the same reason we’re excited about Notion Ink’s Adam. Yes, the Pixel Qi screen option is promising, and on paper the hardware generally doesn’t disappoint, but the start-up’s work on its unique Eden UI and multitasking system will be what makes or breaks the Adam’s long-term usability. “It’s a big phone” is a criticism often levelled at tablets, but most manufacturers aren’t doing much to avoid it. Instead they’re throwing the latest generation of chipsets into a new range of models and rolling out another PR campaign championing the boost in speed.

Perhaps we cling to the idea of hardware salvation because it’s easier, or sexier. The shiniest new chip with a sky-high clock speed or umpteen cores is more straightforward to quantify than software; you can slip into Top Trumps mode and bang the stats together, proclaim device X is better than Y or Z without doing much more than casting an eye over the spec sheet. Maybe we’re just biased toward hardware because software has become devalued: when Google gives away Android free, when you can find just about any app distributed as a torrent, it’s little surprise that we still put more emphasis on the physical despite it being the virtual we interact with daily.

Dual-core isn’t some silver bullet, and while CES 2011 will bring plenty of shiny new smartphones, tablets and more, without the software to back it up we’re still looking at a half-solution that will likely disappoint in day-to-day use. Honeycomb should answer some questions for Android devices, though only later in 2011, but there’s a lot to be said for manufacturers taking the time to develop their own unique implementations. 2011 will be the year of the tablet, and of the dual-core mobile CPU, but more importantly it should be the year that smart software gets the equal attention it deserves.

Notion Ink Adam’s custom Mail’d email app gets video demo

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 08:26 AM PST

Notion Ink has released another video of its Adam tablet, and this time they’re focusing on perhaps one of the most important mobility apps bar the browser: the email client. Their homegrown “Mail’d” app is, the company boasts, one of the fastest around, and includes features like a multitouch QWERTY keyboard and the ability to recall messages you’ve sent accidentally.

Video demo after the cut

There are also handy additions such as reminders if you’ve said you’ll attach a file but subsequently forget to. The app supports multiple accounts simultaneously, as you’d expect, with color-coding and other organization features. Things look pretty slick from Notion Ink’s video, certainly, and we even like the company’s choice of Newton’s cradle as the “thinking” status icon; it beats a spinning pinwheel, certainly.

Viliv X7 & X10 Android tablets and X70 Windows 7 slate due at CES 2011

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 07:39 AM PST

Viliv has joined the crowd of companies promising tablets for CES 2011 next month, with both Android and Windows 7 models promised. The Viliv X7 Android Tablet and X10 Android Tablet are billed as offering “anywhere connectivity” (suggesting 3G or perhaps even 4G wireless) and the “longest battery life” respectively, with the X7 presumably having a 7-inch display while the X10 has a confirmed 10.2-inch display.

Meanwhile the Viliv X70 Windows 7 slate is described as the “most slim and light Windows 7 based tablet in the world”. The previous-gen X70 has a 7-inch touchscreen and measures 210 x 117 x 22.5 mm while tipping the scales at 660g.

We’ve already seen the X10 previewed at Computex 2010 earlier this year, complete with 1080p from an HDMI port as well as optional 3G and/or WiMAX. Still to be revealed is what processor the slate runs, as well as that of its presumably 7-inch X7 sibling.

Verizon LTE SIM-lock potential could dampen 4G fun

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 07:21 AM PST

Verizon’s LTE smartphones may not have the same SIM flexibility as many GSM handset users are familiar with, according to SIM specialist Gemalto, with the potential for cards to only work in Verizon-provided devices or only function if a certain service plan is in operation. Gemalto’s VP of business development, Jean-Louis Carrara, told PCMag that while the new SIMs should permit swapping between Verizon handsets, it’s up to the carrier to decide whether to use the optional lock-down features.

Unlike most GSM SIMs, Carrara says, cards for use with LTE service support greater two-way communication with the network and thus can lock themselves if certain criteria is not met. That could include trying to use a non-Verizon LTE phone on the network (assuming the 4G frequency bands were compatible).

Gemalto is more positive about the advanced SIMs – unsurprising, perhaps, given their position in the market – and would rather we look at the potential flexibility to use a single card with GSM, UMTS, CDMA and LTE network subscriber data in multiple devices. The first Verizon 4G LTE phones are expected to be unveiled at CES 2011 next month; for more on the sort of speeds the network is capable of, check out our data card review.

Roku sales doubled as Apple TV brought halo effect to streaming media

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 06:56 AM PST

Apple TV may be headed to the 1m sales mark, but that doesn’t mean streaming rivals are quaking in their boots. Roku CEO Anthony Wood is actually thankful to Apple for the new Apple TV, telling Business Insider that sales of his products doubled at the time of the Cupertino device’s launch. He credits new attention and awareness of the streaming media category – fuelled by Apple’s massive marketing push – for Roku getting on toward selling its 1 millionth box by the end of 2010.

As for 2011, Roku is planning broader retail distribution along with a greater number of embedded implementations courtesy of licensing deals (as with Netgear’s Roku XD); there’s also the promise of new content. The company recently updated its streamers with 1080p Full HD, together with support for Hulu Plus.

EA 99 cent game promotion wins them 8/10 in the iTunes chart

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 06:33 AM PST

Electronic Arts’ $0.99 iOS game sales promotion looks to have been a success, with the company’s titles taking eight out of the ten top spots among paid iPhone games, and a full 21 of the top 30. The news will likely mean that EA’s games retain prime position among the Apple charts when the company freezes them over the December 22 to December 26 holiday period, giving them a significant attention advantage among new iOS device owners receiving iPads, iPod touches and iPhones this Christmas.

The price slash affected all of EA’s titles for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, bringing games such as The Sims 3 and FIFA 11 down to a mere $0.99 [iTunes link] in the US (or £0.59 in the UK). In case you’re wondering, EA owns game publisher Chillingo, who was responsible for publishing Angry Birds and Cut the Rope.

Over 1.5m Windows Phone 7 sales in first 6 weeks confirms Microsoft

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 06:17 AM PST

It’s taken them long enough to ‘fess up, but Microsoft has finally announced sales figures for handsets running Windows Phone 7. According to Achim Berg, Microsoft’s VP of business and marketing for Windows Phones, the company’s hardware partners sold over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks of availability.

That’s sales between the European October 21 launch and the November 8 North American launch, up to roughly the beginning of December. It’s a figure that will likely be compared with Apple’s 1.7m iPhone 4 sales over the space of three days, when the fourth-gen iOS smartphone launched midway through this year.

Update: To clarify, these are sales to “mobile operators and retailers” as per Berg’s interview below, not to end users.

Press Release:

Windows Phone 7 Sales Off to a Promising Start, First Step in a New Era of Mobile

Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, discusses the momentum, strengths and challenges of the company's newly launched Windows Phone 7.

REDMOND, Wash. – Dec. 21, 2010 – There is one phrase that Achim Berg uses repeatedly to describe the new Windows Phone 7.

"It's a different kind of phone, fast and easy," says Berg, vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones. It's a sentence he relates with enthusiasm daily, whether he's giving a Windows Phone 7 demonstration to a large crowd, or showing off his phone to someone he's just met.

Berg arrived in his role this past summer and has spent time getting to know the team, his partners and the opportunities Microsoft has to re-establish itself in mobile. He made the move just as Microsoft was rolling out Windows Phone 7, which launched in Europe and the Asia Pacific region on October 21 and in the United States and Canada on November 8.

Prior to coming to Redmond, Berg was general manager of Microsoft Germany and area vice president of Microsoft International. Before working at Microsoft, he was a member on the board of directors of Deutsche Telekom T-Com, Europe’s largest telecommunications company, where he was responsible for marketing and sales of the company’s fixed line business.

The Microsoft News Center recently spoke with Berg on how Windows Phone 7 is doing in its first two months since launching worldwide.

News Center: You've just launched Windows Phone, how is it going?

Berg: We believe that to succeed in mobile you need, first of all, a great product, and we think we have that. What we're hearing from our customers is that they're thinking the same way. Additionally, early customer survey data on the overall software experience is very positive and the willingness to recommend our phone is very high. That's really good for us.

What we see as well is that people like the new design and the different approach that we've taken. On the developer side, our tools are really good and leverage the skills they already have. Developers are validating that the tools make it easy to make great apps and games quickly – we have more than 4,000 apps in our marketplace. With more pouring in daily, this is an enviable pace for any new platform.

And just as we did something different with the phone, we did similarly with advertising. Our campaign, with the "Really?" ads, is completely different advertising, and it's very gratifying to see the positive response we've received. Our campaign has been well-accepted and shows that our product has been correctly targeted.

News Center: Windows Phone 7 has been in market for almost two months now worldwide, how are sales going?

Berg: Sales are ramping well as our reputation is growing for offering users a unique experience and are in line with our expectations – especially when compared to other new platform introductions. With a new platform you have to look at a couple of things, first of all customer satisfaction. As I mentioned before, we've seen great response on the complete mobile phone experience.

Another is phone manufacturer sales – phones being bought and stocked by mobile operators and retailers on their way to customers. We are pleased that phone manufacturers sold over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks, which helps build customer momentum and retail presence.

We know we have tough competition, and this is a completely new product. We're in the race – it's not a sprint but we are certainly gaining momentum and we're in it for the long run.

News Center: Do these sales figures meet your expectations?

Berg: Yes, and I think our expectations are realistic for a new platform. We started fresh with Windows Phone 7, and it's a different kind of phone. Measuring for success is more long term than short term. We launched with many of the top mobile operators in the world, and even more in the coming year in 2011. We have 18,000 developers who are developing for our marketplace. It's just getting better and better.

News Center: How does this stack up against the competition?

Berg: It's a bit of apples and oranges comparison; our numbers are similar to the performance of other first generation mobile platforms. We introduced a new platform with Windows Phone 7, and when you do that it takes time to educate partners and consumers on what you're delivering, and drive awareness and interest in your new offering. We're comfortable with where we are, and we are here for the long run; Windows Phone 7 is just the beginning. Our opportunity is to make sure people get to play with a Windows Phone. Once they do, they love it. This is very important for us.

News Center: The smartphone industry is so competitive, how will you catch up?

Berg: We all know that the competition is extreme in this industry, and we have to compete on multiple fronts. We have to deliver a great product that people want to use. We have a different point of view than just delivering apps, and we have received great customer feedback on our approach. We are working on updates that will take us to the next level. Plus, we have great support from the ecosystem including developers, operators and device manufacturers, which will add to momentum we are already seeing.

From this perspective, we're in a good place. We are on a path to begin releasing the first of several updates in the next couple of months, and several more mobile operators around the world will introduce Windows Phone 7 on their network in 2011 and we will have a broader portfolio of devices from phone manufacturers at different price points delivering on our commitment of providing customers choice. We believe doing these things right will lead to continued success.

Pixel Qi & CPT partner to boost transflective display production; 7-inch due in Q2 2011

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 06:03 AM PST

Pixel Qi displays should be in greater supply next year, with the transflective screen company announcing a manufacturing partnership with CPT. The deal will see the two firms release three new screens “of various sizes” in the new year, including a 7-inch 1024 x 600 panel that is expected to go into mass production in early Q2 2011 after making its debut at CES in January.

The partnership between the two companies was apparently prompted by CPT’s demonstration of a transflective display of their own development, presumably the 1366 x 768 panel we covered back in June; the company went on to show the CPT SunLight Viewable panel at the Taitronics show in Taipei in early November. “Discussions between the two companies at that show made it apparent that Pixel Qi and CPT should work together to bring stronger product to market faster” Pixel Qi founder Mary Lou Jepsen says, “a close alliance was formed and the teams have been working together quietly all fall.”

CPT currently produces nearly 40 million screens per month, making it the second-largest mid-size LCD manufacturer in the world. The news hopefully means that stock shortages of devices like the Notion Ink Adam will be addressed as production capacity for Pixel Qi tech displays increases dramatically.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play tipped as PlayStation phone as SE go on domain spree

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:37 AM PST

The discovery of a number of “xperiaplay” domain registrations by a Swedish PR company that counts Sony Ericsson among its clients has led to suggestions that the upcoming PlayStation Android smartphone will launch as the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play. The gaming handset has been spotted in the wild on numerous occasions, complete with PlayStation-style control pad buttons, but so far its branding has been unclear. The hunt for the domains was prompted by PocketNow‘s discovery of an “XPERIA PLAY” trademark filing.

Some prototypes have used the XPERIA logo, as found on Sony Ericsson’s current range of Android handsets, but other sources have suggested that the device would launch as the PlayStation Phone so as to better emphasize its gaming credentials. XperiaX10Blog discovered that Jung Relations has snapped up multiple “xperiaplay” domains, including the .com.org.co.uk and .net, however, leading to suggestions that it will be the name under which the smartphone will be released.

Sony had reportedly been concerned that launching the device with PlayStation branding might dilute the good reputation of its gaming range, so this seems like a halfway compromise that allows for both brands to be represented. The XPERIA Play is expected to make its official debut at MWC 2011 in February, though an actual release date is yet to be confirmed: leaks earlier this month suggested March 2011, though Pocket-lint reports today that their sources say it will be April before the gaming handset reaches the UK.

3DMark 11 gets an update to version 1.01

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:35 AM PST

Geeks all around the world were excited when Futuremark’s latest version of 3Dmark landed earlier this month. There were a few early issues with the benchmarking app that might have soured things a bit for some geeks and a new update has been posted to fix some of those issues.

Futuremark has a new patch out that brings 3DMark 11 to version 1.01. The update fixes issues across all versions like a problem with SystemInfo that stopped Physics and Combined tests from running. Letterbox scaling now works with wide displays, and automatic update notification has been added among other fixes.

The advanced and pro versions get an option for manual GPU count selection. A scaling mode has been added. In addition, the results tab offers individual scores for each test. The Pro version gets exclusive updates with audio working from command line and new quality tool enhancements. You can download the update here.

Pioneer offers new white CDJ-350 and DJM-350 DJ gear

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:15 AM PST

Way back in March of this year Pioneer unveiled the CDJ-350 and DJM-350 DJ gear for pros and beginner DJs to rock out with. That gear was in black and looked like all the other DJ gear we see. Pioneer has announced a new version of the CDJ-350 and the DJM-350 that come in a cool white color.

This is the gear that a Storm Trooper turned DJ would want to rock the Deathstar with. Other than the color, the gear has the same specs as the black offerings from earlier in the year. The CDJ-350-W media player has a BEAT display that helps the DJ to see where the beat position of a song is. It also has a beat loop, loop divide, and hot loop function. The device has tons of other features as well.

The DJM-350-W is a DJ mixer with functions that are the same as the black version and similar to other DJM mixers offered by Pioneer. It offers four effects including noise, short echo, filter, and jet. It converts analog signals to digital, and has multiple other features as well. The packaged pearl white DJ system with two CDJ-350W and one DJM-350-W will sell for $2445 and will ship in January.

Ben Heck cobbles up portable PS3 mod

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:02 AM PST

Ben Heck is a modding guru that can turn big home gaming consoles into portable rigs that geeks can take with them on the road. The latest mod that Heck has come up with is an epic portable PS3 mod that is inside a military-grade portable case.

The mod came to be when Heck got a request from a couple UAV pilots in Afghanistan that wanted a portable PS3 console that was housed inside a military grade iM2600 Pelican Storm Case to pass the time in between flights. The problem with normal gaming gear is that the conditions in the Stan are too harsh for normal gear.

You will have to watch the build episode to see exactly how Heck built the console, but it looks cool. It reminds me of something a James Bond baddie would whip out to destroy the world. I wonder where the discs go on the thing.

Haxor hacks AirPlay to run on XBMC Linux rig

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 04:31 AM PST

We have seen plenty of hacks for AirPlay that extend the service and allow it to operate on things that Apple never really intended. Last month AirPlay was hacked to run on all iDevices for sending video. Earlier this month there was another hack that allows Macs to support AirPlay Streaming from iOS devices using AirPlayer.

TUAW reports today that another hack has surfaced for AirPlay and this time it takes streaming outside of the Apple world and crams it inside an XMBC Linux machine. The machine running AirPlay in the video below is an Ubuntu Linux machine. TUAW also reports that several people have said they are working on a port for Windows rigs too.

I wonder how Steve Jobs feels about that. On the Linux machine, the content can be played directly from the integrated iOS video menus on the XBMC application that uses Bonjour.

Evo 4G for $99 at RadioShack and more deals this week

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 04:20 AM PST

RadioShack has turned itself into one of the places that you need to check before you upgrade to a new smartphone or buy a new device. The thing I like best about the deals RadioShack offers is that there are no mail-in rebates; the price advertised is what you pay.

If you have had your eye on a new Evo 4G smartphone and are a new customer or have an upgrade you can get the Evo 4G for $99 until December 25. To get that price you have to trade in any working cell phone and sign a new 2-year contract. The phone you trade doesn’t even need to be a smartphone, it just needs to work.

If the Evo 4G isn’t what you want you can also get the Samsung Captivate on AT&T for $49.99. If Windows Phone 7 is your thing, the LG Quantum is also $49.99. The iPhone 3GS is also being discounted to $49 along with the BlackBerry Torch. All new devices will also get a free Bluetooth headset with a qualifying 2-year mobile plan.

Gynormous Kno dual screen and single screen tablets ship today

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 03:57 AM PST

Tablets are really hot right now with the iPad having the vast majority of the market. The device has taken a big bite out of notebook sells according to some analysts. There are other tablets on the market though with notables like the Galaxy Tab and others. A new choice in the tablet market is shipping today with the single and dual screen version of the Kno tablet heading to buyers.

The gigantic dual-screen Kno is aimed at students and sells for about $900. The idea behind the tablet is that you can read textbooks on it and take notes. It’s interesting to note that the company behind the tablet won’t say how many were ordered. At that price, I say it’s not many.

The company also hasn’t allowed any reviews of their tablet. I would personally buy nothing from a company not comfortable enough with its offering to allow reviewers to get hands on. The single screen version is a 14.1-inch tablet that is aimed at competing with the iPad. One of the cooler features of the Kno tablets is that users can highlight text and write in the margins of their books for notes. The single screen Kno is $600. I think I would hold out for a review of the things before ordering if I were interested.

Apple prunes WikiLeaks app from App Store

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 03:45 AM PST

You would have to live under a rock, or even worse not have internet access to not know the saga of WikiLeaks that has been going on over the last few months. All of the leaked documents that the site published finally came back to bite the site and the man behind the curtain is facing some serious criminal charges.

Apple has now removed the WikiLeaks app from the App Store. The app wasn’t official and was designed to let you follow the site via the WikiLeaks Twitter account. The app was pulled at some point early this morning apparently.

The app was very short lived with TechCrunch reporting that it had only gone live on December 17, which was last Friday. The app sold for $1.99 and was one of those apps that many were surprised to see approved at all considering the controversy around the site right now. I wonder if Apple will use the kill switch to pull the app from the devices of anyone who happened to buy.

If you are the proud owner of a Google Nexus One smartphone you may have been wondering exactly when you will be getting your Android OS updated to Gingerbread officially. We have some good news and bad news for you.

The good news is that the official Gingerbread update will be coming for your device. The bad news is the only ETA we have is “in the coming weeks.” Yeah, that sucks. It’s sort of like your parents telling you as a kid that you could have that new game systems “one of these days.”

The tip on the update came from the Nexus Twitter account and read, “The Gingerbread OTA for Nexus One will happen in the coming weeks. Just hang tight!”
