BOGO at T-Mobile USA, Buy One Smartphone or Samsung Galaxy Tab, Get a Smartphone Free! Posted: 22 Nov 2010 12:24 PM PST Not just ANY smartphone, of course, and there’s a catch: Starting Black Friday, new and existing customers signing up for a T-Mobile FAMILY PLAN with a 2yr agreement and purchase any of several featured smartphones (including the T-Mobile myTouch 4G, or the Samsung Galaxy Tab) get a fatured smartphone or “affordable Android handset” for free! Sounds like a reasonable enough deal, yes? Totally family oriented. There’s some sweet phones on that list, too, including a favorite of mine, the T-Mobile G2.
Featured smartphones on the list for purchase to get into this deal or for free if you’ve already done the first part of the requirement include the T-Mobile myTouch 4G, T-Mobile G2, HTC HD7, and the BlackBerry Bold 9780. Included in the list of “affordable Android handsets” are these: Motorola DEFY, Motorola CHARM, LG Optimus T, and the T-Mobile Comet. This promo works on all T-Mobile family plans including legacy and Even More, for new customers activating two or more lines, or existing customers who are already on a T-Mobile family plan and upgrade at least one of their eligible lines. Also note: “Mail-in rebates are applicable on all devices and data plans will be required.” So get ready for some extra costs if you’re the sort of person who ends up just forgetting to do the rebate part of the process. This offer is good between November 26th 2010 and January 18 2011. — Thanks Lori! |
Volvo’s Air Motion Concept Car Runs on Air Posted: 22 Nov 2010 11:53 AM PST Probably the best part of being a concept, is that you get to use your imagination a little bit more than you would in an actual production model. At least, until you have to figure out how to actually get what you conceptualized to work in the real world. While we’ve seen plenty of other concept vehicles in the past work on all sorts of things, this new design from Volvo, called the Air Motion Concept, is a design that would have the vehicle running on nothing but the air.
Teh Air Motion Concept is powered by compressed air, and compressed air only. It’s held within a tank, and accessed when the vehicle needs power. Considering that the whole vehicle is powered by air, and the frame is constructed from carbon fiber, it’s no surprise that the vehicle would weigh somewhere in the ballpark of 1,000 pounds. There’s no combustion engine under the hood, either. Instead, designers implemented a pneumatic motor. When asked at the LA Auto Show how you would refuel the vehicle that runs on air, Volvo said that they believe there will be wind-powered stations ready to fill up your Air Motion Concept when the time comes. Verizon LTE SIM Cards Showing up in Some Verizon Stores Posted: 22 Nov 2010 11:18 AM PST With Verizon getting ready to launch their 4G LTE-based network in just a matter of weeks, there’s no surprise that the company would be getting their retail locations ready for what’s to come. We know that there aren’t any handsets being readied for the initial roll-out, but that doesn’t mean that the USB modems and netbooks won’t need their own LTE 4G SIM cards.
The photo does indeed show a 4G-branded SIM card, with the Verizon logo present as well. As we mentioned above, Verizon won’t have any handsets ready to go right off the bat, but the SIM cards should be used for USB modems, as well as notebooks that get green-lit for 4G connectivity. With the LTE launch due in December, at least a few Verizon customers out there are counting down the days until they can access the faster speeds. [via Droid-Life] |
The FOKI Will Clean the Floor While You Walk Posted: 22 Nov 2010 10:59 AM PST While you’re walking around your home, or maybe even in a restaurant or retail location, you sometimes notice that a spot on the floor may be sticky, or have a spill on it that you wish you could clean up, right then and there. But sometimes getting something to clean it isn’t all that easy, so what if your shoes could clean it? That’s where the FOKI come in.
The FOKI floor cleaner shoes are a concept design from designer Adika Titut Triyugo. They are designed to feature a pair of rotary cleaners on the bottom of each shoe, which rotate to clean the floor, and kill bacteria. You just charge them up during the night, and then throughout the day you should have enough power to get through some spot-cleaning here and there. There’s an LED indicator on the side of the shoes, which will tell you how much power is left. No word on when, or if, this design concept could ever see the light of day, but considering how many people hate sweeping, and are always looking for new ways to make cleaning easier, there’s a chance that these FOKI shoes could see the light of day. Thanko Soundproof Keyboard Cover Silences the Keystroke, Covers Your Hands Posted: 22 Nov 2010 10:38 AM PST Depending on your situation, you may not want everyone around you hearing you type. Or, maybe you just don’t like the sound of keys being pressed repeatedly, all day long. Thankfully, Thanko has you covered (pun intended). They’ve just shown off their brand new Soundproof keyboard cover, and instead of using some kind of new technology to silence the keystroke, they’ve just made you wear something over your hands.
According to Thanko, this very unique design makes sure that the sounds of the click on “older” keyboards isn’t heard. But, there’s enough room inside to make sure that touch-typists can go about their business without being hindered by the cover. And, if you’re someone who needs to look at the keyboard, there’s a nice viewport at the top of the cover, giving you ample room to see what’s going on inside the cover. The cover costs about $36, or 2,980 yen. It’s available for purchase from Geek Stuff 4 U, if you really think you have to have it. [via Akihabara News] |
Posted: 22 Nov 2010 10:18 AM PST It’s been a long time coming, but iOS 4.2 is now officially available for those with an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. We knew it was coming earlier today, and we even brought you some on-time analysis of the major software upgrade for iOS-base devices. And now that it is finally, officially available for the masses, there should be plenty of people plugging in their iDevice, getting ready to sample some of the 100 brand new features that 4.2 brings to the table.
Of course, of those 100 new features, there’s going to be a few in there that shine brighter than others. For example, if you’re updating your iPad to iOS 4.2, one of the best features is the multitasking that is now supported by the tablet device. You will also get access to Folders, Game Center, AirPlay, and AirPrint. When it comes to GameCenter, these are just upgrades to the social networking feature, as it has been available since iOS 4.1 on the smaller iDevices. For you iPad owners, welcome to the new social networking of gaming. Go ahead and get to downloading, and let us know in the comments if iOS 4.2 has been everything you thought it would be. And, if you’ve got yourself an iPad, how’s that multitasking working out for you? [via Apple] |
Laser-Guided Slingshot is Do It Yourself Project for the Family Posted: 22 Nov 2010 10:08 AM PST As a kid, having a slingshot is one of the coolest things to show off to your friends. Even if it is, usually, just a piece of wood, some rubber, and something small enough that you can fling at some unsuspecting person. The idea is cool, in of itself. But, what if someone decided to make it better? That’s exactly what KipKay asked, and then he went about and actually made it happen. So, now instead of a hunk of wood and some rubber, you now have some aluminum chunks, some rubber, and a laser-guided system.
This new slingshot was a do it yourself project from KipKay, which would initially make it a one-of-a-kind item, but he’s happy to show you how he made it in the video, which you can watch below. So, if you’re someone who likes to put things together, which include lasers, and you’ve missed your slingshot of your childhood days, here’s a great way to bring it back to life, with a nice enhancement. The design features chunks of aluminum, and a single 6mm red laser diode. The whole thing is run by a pair of AA batteries, which are tucked away inside. What’s better, though, is that the handle works as a storage compartment for your ammunition, too. Go ahead and check out the video below, to see the laser-guided slingshot in action. [via DVICE] |
iPad 2 Launching in April, According to Analyst Posted: 22 Nov 2010 09:42 AM PST A yearly refresh for Apple products is expected. Even for something like the iPad, Apple’s magical and revolutionary tablet device, which could probably be just fine on the market without seeing a hardware refresh so soon, people are already counting down the days until early 2011, when they expect Apple to come forward and announce a brand new tablet device. Rumors regarding the tablet, which range from featuring a Retina Display of its own, all the way to featuring a carbon fiber frame, help fuel the hype of the device, but according to a new report from analyst Brian Marshall, the iPad 2 may not be all that different from the first iteration, and we should expect to see it in April.
If the second generation iPad does launch in April, that would put it on course for a yearly refresh, much like we see with the iPhone and iPod line-up. No one is expecting anything different. But, what Marshall, of Gleacher & Co., is warning people, seems to paint a dull image of the next iPad. More precisely, Marshall believes that the new device will look, and feel, much like the previous version, and that many of the features will be the same as well. He doesn’t make any mention of a Retina Display, or any one of the othe rumors about the device. Except for that front-facing camera, along with another camera on the back. Marshall is convinced that the new iPad will feature a dual-camera set-up this time around. It’s been pointed out in the past that the original iPad featured space at the top of the bezel, on the front, to include a camera, but obviously Apple must have felt that a camera on the first generation tablet device wasn’t necessary. But, now that FaceTime is up and running, with people enjoying it all over the place, it would make sense to have the same feature on the tablet device. Marshall also suggests that Apple won’t switch around the storage capacity, either. He believes that the second generation iPad will feature the same 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models. He doesn’t make mention of pricing, though. So, if Marshall is correct, and the iPad 2 launches in April, with hardly any differentiating features from the first iteration, the question is pretty simple: how well will it sell? Considering the original iPad is still on track for seeing huge sales this holiday season, it will certainly be an interesting first half of 2011 for Apple. [via ComputerWorld] |
Sony and Philips TVs Having Color Issues with Apple TV [Video] Posted: 22 Nov 2010 09:26 AM PST There’s obviously a lot of testing that goes into any major product, all in hopes that when it finally hits retail shelves, and ultimately into the possession of customers all over the globe, that nothing goes wrong. But, unforeseen things can happen. For example, it’s become apparent that some owners of Sony and Philips-branded TVs are experiencing some major color issues with their Apple TV set-top boxes.
According to the owners, the video output is being altered, causing all sorts of issues on the color front of viewing their favorite programming. Unfortunately, some of the issues include a strange green tint on the display, or even inverted colors. Some owners are even experiencing black screens, where they can’t see anything at all. Owners of these TVs apparently date back to early October, but there’s no word on what, exactly, is causing the issue. However, Apple is aware of the situation, and as anyone might have guessed, they are hard at work on trying to figure out a solution. Apple engineers have in contact with some owners, trying to acquire more information about the problem, while those who have contacted AppleCare due to the issue, have been reportedly told that a fix is in progress, and should be coming soon. Check out the video below to see an affected TV in action. [via Electronista] |
MicroVision SHOWWX+ Laser Micro-Projector Unveiled Posted: 22 Nov 2010 09:07 AM PST Have something on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad that you really want to show off to people? What if you want to project an image onto the back of a seat on an airplane, during a long flight? MicroVision has your back, as the company has just released the MicroVision SHOWWX+ laser micro-projector, and it’s fully capable of doing all of those things. But, with a small package, and features to boot, MicroVision is asking a pretty penny for their micro-projector.
The new laser micro-projector is compatible with Apple’s iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhone. You just connect the device, and then the projector will shoot out a 16:9 image, which can range in size from 12-inches, all the way up to 100-inches. MicroVision also claims that the new projector is 50% brighter than their previous iteration. The SHOWWX+ laser micr-projector is about the same size as your standard smartphone, so it should be easy enough to carry around. As far as battery life goes, the company suggests that you should get anywhere between 90 and 120 minutes of usage out of it, depending upon how you use it. As for price, you’ll be looking at spending $499, right from MicroVision, to get your hands on this little projector. [via UberGizmo] ![]() ![]() |
Nintendo DSi in Orange and Green Landing on Retail Shelves for Black Friday Posted: 22 Nov 2010 08:46 AM PST With Black Friday just around the corner, and plenty of deals and exclusives beginning to pop up here and there, Nintendo is looking to spice things up with a pair of brand new colored DSi portable gaming consoles. The new consoles are a Black Friday exclusive, and they’re being announced by Nintendo directly, which means the new mobile consoles should be arriving in plenty of retail locations.
While the video game retail locations are probably safe bet, as are the larger electronics retailers out there, Sears will also have the new consoles in stock by the time Black Friday rolls around. The orange DSi, along with the green one, will retail for $150, and it includes one free title: Mario Party DS. So if you’ve been waiting to get your hands on a uniquely colored DSi, just wait a couple more days, and your dream could come true. Press Release

Samsung’s bada most successful OS launch since iPhone? Posted: 22 Nov 2010 08:37 AM PST Samsung’s bada OS didn’t convince us at its launch, and the first bada device – the Samsung Wave S8500 – was soon overshadowed by the Android-based Galaxy S. Turns out, that may have been too hasty; according to the most recent smartphone figures, crunched by Tomi Ahonen, bada’s launch has been the most successful OS debut since that of the original iPhone.
In fact, Samsung managed to take 2-percent – or 1.3m users - of the market in Q3, a market that consists of roughly 80m users worldwide. That puts it a single percentage point behind Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, and means bada’s first four months of availability were more successful than those of Android. That’s despite having no US carrier support for the platform, and – up until recently – just one handset representing Samsung’s play for the market. Of course, the company is still putting the majority of its weight behind Android, but it looks like we shouldn’t be too quick to count bada out. [via GigaOm] |
Dell Inspiron Duo hands-on [Video] Posted: 22 Nov 2010 08:03 AM PST Dell’s Inspiron Duo convertible hybrid netbook/tablet made waves back at IDF 2010 in September, and is fast approaching for an early December launch in the US and Europe. We caught up with Dell today to grab some hands-on time and see whether it’s possible to deliver the portability of a tablet with the usability of a netbook, all with Windows 7. Video demo after the cut
As announced earlier this week, the Dell Inspiron Duo will go on sale from $549 with Intel’s dual0-core Atom N550 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard-drive and Broadcom’s Crystal HD video accelerator. The display itself is a 10.1-inch panel running at 1366 x 768 resolution and using a capacitive touchscreen layer. Dell Inspiron Duo hands-on: First impressions are that it’s not the lightest tablet we’ve played with. As a netbook, it’s reasonable, but flip the display around and the form-factor is chunky and heavy. Comfortable to rest on your lap on the sofa, perhaps, but this isn’t the mobility device for use while walking. It’s a shame, as Dell’s choice of grippy rubber for the casing makes for an easily-held machine with none of the fear over it slipping out of your hands as you might have with the iPad or Galaxy Tab. The display looks small compared to the chassis, thanks to the double-bezel, though Dell’s choice of panel is bright and clear. The touchscreen, too, seemed reasonably responsive, though some of Windows 7′s smaller icons proved tricky and we resorted – in netbook mode, anyway – to the trackpad instead. As for the QWERTY keyboard, that’s a solid chiclet style and held up well to some rapid-fire battering. What you don’t get is a capacitive stylus (or, indeed, an active digitizer) to take advantage of Windows 7′s handwriting recognition. This particular Inspiron Pro unit is pre-production, running unoptimized software, and so it’s hard to tell exactly how the netbook will perform. As it stands, it was a sluggish and disappointing experience running Dell’s custom UI apps, but we’re told that will all change before the tablet hits shelves. Dell’s finger-friendly interface automatically kicks in whenever the screen is rotated into tablet orientation, and supports both portrait and landscape orientations. When it’s finished, it will have music, video, photo and ebook browsers, together with internet access, though it’s unclear how much changed the browser UI will end up being. The Inspiron Duo scored 2.4 in the Windows 7 Experience ratings, helped by its 2GB of RAM and Broadcom HD video chipset. Unfortunately, that video acceleration is somewhat wasted since there’s no video output on either the Duo itself or the optional speaker-dock. The tablet gets power, two USB 2.0 and a headphones socket, while the dock – complete with JBL speakers – has a multiformat memory card reader, two further USB 2.0 ports, audio, ethernet and power. No HDMI or even VGA, as you’d expect to find on even the most basic of netbooks. We’d loved to have seen a wireless video connection between the dock and the Duo, for streaming content to your TV, but it seems that’s not on Dell’s agenda. With an estimated 4hr battery life and a reasonably tubby body – for a tablet – the Inspiron Duo feels more like an at-home machine than suited to frequent-flier mobility use. It’s too early to say how well the dual-core Atom and Windows 7 holds up to the user experience of something like an iPad or Galaxy Tab, but there will be typists pleased to have the option of a solid physical keyboard when there’s more than a few lines of text to be entered. We’re still curious, but will wait until the final product drops before deciding whether the Dell Inspiron Duo offers the best of both worlds or falls short in each. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Verizon’s “most advanced” 4G LTE network confirmed for Dec 2010 [Video] Posted: 22 Nov 2010 07:30 AM PST A new Verizon commercial has confirmed that the carrier intends to launch its LTE network in December 2010, fulfilling its previous promise to have the high-speed 4G system up and running in select markets by the end of this year. Verizon’s LTE service won’t be available in handsets initially; instead, the carrier will initially use it for 4G data cards before handsets arrive early in 2011.
According to the commercial, Verizon reckons its LTE system is the “most advanced 4G network in the world.” The carrier has previously said that speed-based pricing is being considered, where users would pay more not only for extra data but for the speed at which they could access it. More information on the new 4G network here. [via Android Community] |

Netflix out $7.99 streaming-only plan; increase DVD plan pricing Posted: 22 Nov 2010 07:06 AM PST Netflix has launched a US streaming-only subscription plan, offering unlimited streamed movies and TV shows for $7.99 per month. Meanwhile, if you still fancy a physical DVD in your mailbox, stand by to pay a little more each month, as Netflix has also bumped its unlimited DVD/streaming plan to $9.99.
The launch follows the release of a similar streaming-only plan in Canada earlier in the year. In fact, Netflix is now describing itself as “primarily a streaming video company delivering a wide selection of TV shows and films over the Internet” according to Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and CEO. As for the price increases, they affect just about all of the existing monthly plans. Full details in the chart below. Press Release:

Over 600,000 Galaxy Tabs sold claims Samsung Posted: 22 Nov 2010 06:52 AM PST Samsung has announced that it has sold more than 600,000 of its Galaxy Tab slates so far, with the company predicting it will meet its self-imposed target of 1m unit sales by the end of 2010. In Korea alone, Samsung has sold around 30,000 Galaxy Tab units since it went on sale there on November 14.
The company has said that consumer demand for the 7-inch tablet has been robust, outpacing supply in most countries. The ambitious 1m target was set back at IFA 2010 in the glowing aftermath of the Galaxy Tab’s launch, with Samsung's mobile division head Shin Jong-kyun predicting that “tablet PCs will take over a bigger portion of the market next year.” The company has confirmed that it has several models in the pipeline, with both larger and smaller screen sizes than the first generation model. iPad shines as a touch computer with iOS 4.2 Posted: 22 Nov 2010 06:36 AM PST iOS 4.2 was released today for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. iOS 4.2 boasts over 100 new features however I feel AirPrint and AirPlay are among the most significant new features and deserve a deeper analysis. AirPrint and AirPlay will be nice new additions for the iPhone and iPod Touch however the iPad is where they shine. Printing had been one of the main early requests after the iPad came out signaling that consumers wanted to do more with their iPads than just surf the web and play games. Apple has provided that feature and gone one better with AirPlay.
AirPrint is integrated most seamlessly right now with the core apps Apple makes where printing makes sense like Safari, the Photos app and the entire iWork suite of apps. Consumers will be able to print to printers that have updated their drivers to support AirPrint. Given that I do a lot of photo editing and management with my iPad instead of my Macbook Pro this feature is very useful. I have a Kodak wireless printer and Kodak has not released drivers supporting AirPrint so I wasn’t able to test AirPrint. Given the popularity of the iPad I fully assume many printer companies will release updates soon. AirPlay is one the features I have been most excited about. I've been able to use a final release of iOS 4.2 for iPad and when connected to my Apple TV the experience is impressive. What surprised me about AirPlay was how easy it was to set up and start streaming photos, music and movies to the TV. On the screen is a new icon that when selected will ask you which screen you want to play your content on simply select the device, in this case Apple TV, and instantly it streams to the TV. You use the touch interface on the iPad to control the content playing on the TV. Since iOS 4.2 supports multitasking you can start a movie or slideshow on the iPad move it to Apple TV using AirPlay then still use your iPad to browse the web, check email and more. I plan on using AirPlay extensively over the the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday to show off our latest family portraits and summer vacation videos to all our family and friends. AirPlay works currently only with Apple's applications but let's hope they extend the service to other apps like Netflix, Hulu, ABC Player and maybe even games in the future. Audio does however work with any application through AirPlay making it possible to use and control Pandora and stream the audio to another AirPlay supported iDevice. iOS 4.2 definitely makes the iPad feel like a new iPad. Those buying the iPad for loved ones for the holiday will enjoy the robust new features. Even though the iPad is not quite a replacement for your notebook or desktop PC the added ability to print and stream content has taken it a few steps closer. |
Verizon FiOS gets 150/35 Mbps plan Posted: 22 Nov 2010 06:35 AM PST
Meanwhile Verizon has promised to have the 150/35 option available to all of their existing FiOS small-business customers by the end of 2011. As for what you can do with it, a 2hr SD movie (around 1.5GB) will download in under 80 seconds, while the same HD movie (5GB) takes less than 4.5 minutes.
Meanwhile uploading 100MB of photos would take less than 23 seconds. Obviously not everyone will get the maximum speed the press release talks about, but it’s impressive stuff all the same. Unfortunately, while the speed is eye-watering, so is the price: $194.99 per month assuming a one-year agreement and Verizon wireline voice service. Press Release:

Find My iPhone now free for iPad, iPod touch 4G and iPhone 4 Posted: 22 Nov 2010 06:20 AM PST iOS 4.2 isn’t the only free product coming out of Apple today. The company has also announced that Find My iPhone – the cellphone tracking service previously part of the paid MoabileMe suite of services – is now free for those users with an iPhone 4, iPad or fourth-gen iPod touch.
Functionally the service is the same as before: a free app is available in the App Store and installed on the device, and with it users can log into Apple’s site from any browser and see where their device is. Should it merely be misplaced, you can remotely instruct it to play a noise or display a message on-screen. However, if you suspect the phone has been permanently lost or stolen, you can lock the phone and wipe its data. If you’ve got an eligible device, you should be able to download the Find My iPhone app from the App Store now. |
iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch released Posted: 22 Nov 2010 05:30 AM PST Apple‘s latest mobile software release, iOS 4.2, has made its official debut today, consisting of what’s said to be over a hundred new features and innovations. Available for iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod touch, iOS 4.2′s main updates include iPad multitasking, folders, AirPrint, AirPlay, Game Center (updates to this, since it’s been around since 4.1), improvements to Mail, text search in Safari, enhanced enterprise support, and enhancements in accessibility, keyboard, and dictionary functions.
This is only the second major update to iOS 4, and it affects some of the most popular devices in the world right now. Developers already had access some time ago, to allow them to get their applications ready for things like iPad multitasking, as part of Apple’s usual seeding process. There were a few rumors about this release way before it ended up being shot out of a cannon, including a fix for the lock-screen exploit, together with a WiFi issue fix for iPad. Now the real deal is here. We’ll be putting it through its paces on the SlashGear devices, but let us know how you get on with iOS 4.2 in the comments. It’s available via iTunes on your Mac or PC. Mavizon AutoBot helps you find a lost car and keeps up with maintenance Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:54 AM PST A company called Mavizon has unveiled a new device that works with the iPhone and looks interesting called the AutoBot. I would bet a suit from Hasbro over the name chosen for the device would be coming in short order. AutoBot won’t turn your new Camaro into a crime fighting robot, but it will help you find your car if you forget where you parked.
The device is compatible with “almost any” cell phone and computer out there according to the maker and will work with most cars from year 1996 and up. It will tell you when you need maintenance like oil changes and such, presumably you have to tell the thing when you changed the oil and what interval you want. It can also give you trouble codes from your car too. The part of the system that connects to the car is a silver rectangle that plugs into the OBDII port under the steering column on most rides. The system can send the GPS location of the car to 911 and other numbers in the event that an accident is detected. It can also be used to track exactly where you car is whether it’s stolen, your kid is borrowing it and you want to know where they are, and if you just forgot where you parked. |
Audi TTS autonomous racecar climbs Pikes Peak sans driver Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:38 AM PST Cars that drive themselves are really cool and the area is a hot bed for research for all sorts of uses. The military likes the though is autonomous vehicles since they could move supplies without putting soldiers in harm’s way. Audi has announced that its cool looking TTS autonomous vehicle has participated in the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
If you have never seen this event, it’s really cool. Racecars storm up the massive Pikes Peak hill to see who is the fastest on narrow roads that sometimes sit on the side of a cliff with huge drops to a crushing death if the turn is missed. The Audi autonomous vehicle made it to the top of the track without a driver in a time of 27 minutes. That sounds like a long time, but human drivers are expected to do it in around 17 minutes. The course is 12.42 miles long and the Audi hit a top speed of 47 mph during the run. ![]() ![]() |
Geek combines love of beer and PC gaming in one sweet casemod Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:23 AM PST I have seen some really cool casemods over the years. I am partial to the ones that have lots of attention to detail. A geek has taken two of his loves and combined them in an epic mash up of beer and PC gaming. The details on the computer he put inside this keg are scant, but really who cares what the hardware is.
The dude took an old, beat up Anheuser-Busch keg and cut some windows into the thing. He then cut the bottom off so he could slip those PC components inside and powered coated the whole thing black. After the powder coating was done some chrome trim went on to finish the bling. Inside the keg PC the dude added some blue lights. It won't hold beer any more naturally, but it has a bottle opener on the side to open your favorite bottled beverage. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Gmail call recording rolling out widely Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:12 AM PST
People that like to archive calls will really like it and those that fear their privacy being violated with calls recorded may not be a fan of the new feature. The ability to record calls has been a feature for a while, but you had to press “4″ on the keypad to do the recording and most didn't know about the feature. The roll out is integrating the record button into the GUI of the Gmail call features. The feature only works for recording inbound calls and there is a verbal warning that both users can hear when the call is recorded. That should make those that fear their privacy feel better. |
UK iPad shoppers to get a deal for the holidays with Orange and T-Mobile Posted: 22 Nov 2010 03:57 AM PST If you are a UK geek that has an iPad on the shopping list for the holidays, you need to be watching Orange and T-Mobile stores. The mobile carriers are both expected to start selling the iPad directly from the retail stores at a subsidized discount for buying a 3G mobile plan and signing away some of your wireless freedom.
The deals are expected to be formally announced today. Expectations are that the iPad will go for as little as £200 for users who agree to an 18-month contract or a 2-year contract on a data plan. That is way cheaper than the normal price for the iPad of £700. This may be the best deal going in the UK for the iPad this holiday season. If you are planning to get a new data, plan to go with the iPad 3G version anyway it makes little sense unless you are really allergic to contracts to not take advantage of this deal. |
