New iPhone App Locates Products in Aisles at Stores Posted: 22 Nov 2010 05:31 AM PST aisle411 is today launching its iPhone application for locating products in specific aisles and sections at retails stores. The application works at more than 600 stores in the U.S. and is meant to serve as a faster, more convenient way for shoppers to search and find items at stores. Application users can type in product search queries or use the voice recognition technology, powered by Nuance, to search at participating stores. For each supported store, aisle411 also includes a comprehensive store map and store info, and UPC barcode scanning to pull up user-generated product reviews. Generic product searches — double sided tape, for instance — will return search results that specify available types and brands. App users can then glance the section and aisle number for each result, select to map a product for navigational assistance or choose to add it to a shopping list. Participating stores may also opt to include coupons and offers. The application surfaces Coupons.com offers available at stores, and highlights them in the offers portion of the app. The service even includes a now ubiquitous checkin feature, so users can check in to stores, share their location with friends via Twitter and Facebook and earn badges and titles for their behaviors — think becoming the “Captain” of a particular store. These features seem a bit tired and unnecessary; if there’s a voice search or barcode scan, then there should be sufficient information for the service to automatically recognize that you’re at a particular venue. aisle411 currently works at locations such as Schnucks Market drug stores and at Shop’n Save’s grocery chain. Obviously, the application is limited by the fact that its application only works at participating retailers. The idea certainly has traction, apart from the copycat checkin features. We’ve already seen applications and services tackle location-based rewards and in-store barcode scans (Shopkick and Checkpoints come to mind), but solving the problem of locating products in stores feels fresh and will certainly be useful to lost shoppers. aisle411 was founded in 2008. The company works with partner retailers to provide the in-store product search and offer experience; more retailers are said to be signing on with the startup on an daily basis. The aisle411 app is currently for iPhone only, but similar applications for Android and BlackBerry will be released in 2011. ![]() Image courtesy of Flickr, Gavin St. Ours More About: iphone app, Mobile 2.0, mobile shopping, retail, shopping For more Startups coverage:

WikiLeaks Announces Release 7x the Size of the Iraq War Logs Posted: 22 Nov 2010 03:21 AM PST WikiLeaks has announced an important release on their Twitter account, claiming it’ll be 7 times bigger than the Iraq war logs, which are widely considered to be the biggest military leak in history. “Next release is 7x the size of the Iraq War Logs. intense pressure over it for months. Keep us strong” was the message posted to the Wikileaks Twitter account earlier today. The message was followed by an even bolder statement two hours later: “The coming months will see a new world, where global history is redefined.” WikiLeaks is an organization that publishes submissions of otherwise unavailable documents, keeping the sources anonymous. It has published nearly 500,000 secret U.S. documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Recently, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange found himself in the center of a rape scandal. The rape charges against him were initially dropped, but the case still looms over Assange’s head, with the Swedish court recently approving a motion to bring him into custody for questioning. No details about the upcoming release have been revealed, but the fact that it was mentioned in the same context as the Iraq war logs points to another military-related leak. LG Launches Windows 7 Tablet in Korea Posted: 22 Nov 2010 01:38 AM PST LG has launched a Windows 7-based tablet computer for the Korean market, named the E-Note H1000B. The tablet features a 10.1-inch capacitive touchsreen, an Intel Atom Z510 or Z530 CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of SSD storage, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, an SD card reader and two USB 2.0 slots. Interestingly enough, it comes with the severely limited Windows 7 Starter Edition and it has no camera, which is the distinguishing feature of most tablets in the post-iPad era. The slightly lackluster specifications of this tablet won’t send anyone into ecstasy, and neither will the price of about $850. However, LG also plans to launch an Android tablet soon, which will hopefully be more of an iPad competitor than the E-Note H1000B. 10 Unique iPhone Photography Accessories Posted: 21 Nov 2010 05:58 PM PST The iPhone boasts a pretty decent camera, backed up by a ton of really cool apps, but there’s no doubt there are a few specialized areas of photography — shooting video and still life, for example — where the iPhone could use a helping hand. We’re not suggesting anyone buy the entire set of accessories we’ve listed below, but you may find one or two items could really improve the shooting capabilities of Apple’s mobile. So, take a look at the add-ons we’ve found, and let us know in the comments any iPhone accessories that have helped you with your iPhotography. 1. iPhone Tripod Holder![]() This tripod holder is one of a few options available, but its real selling point is its low price, making it ideal for anyone who might have an occasional need to stick their iPhone on a tripod. For just under $10, you’ll get a simple but useful sturdy mount that features durable brass threads for a secure attachment. Cost: $9.95 2. Owle Bubo![]() The Owle Bubo is a fairly major accessory for the iPhone. It transforms the mobile device into a camera with some comprehensive features. It adds a full-size lens, an external microphone, four tripod mount points and an integrated cold shoe for adding lights and the like. Finally, with an ergonomic design, the added weight the Bubo provides increases control for a more camera-like experience. Cost: $169.95 for iPhone 4, $159.95 for 3G/3GS 3. Flip-Cage with iPhone 4 Mount![]() This folding tabletop stand for your iPhone 4 or 3GS model can be used as a small tripod and doubles as a desktop stand for watching movies or making Facetime calls. In addition, the iPhone mount can be removed so you can use your phone on any tripod. Cost: $38.90 4. Factron Quattro Cases![]() The high-end Factron case for your iPhone will add some metallic and leather chic to your mobile, giving it a classic camera look and feel. The five interchangeable lenses (sold separately) will add more effects to your shooting repertoire. The case is available in 15 different colors and finishes and is made of “duralumin,” which certainly sounds rugged. Cost: Approx $220 5. Zacuto Zgrip iPhone Jr. Handgrip![]() The Zgrip iPhone Jr. is a handgrip system for shooting more stable video on the move with your iPhone, and it also offers a thread to mount the handgrip to a tripod for stationery shooting. There’s also another thread on the top for mounting other accessories such as a light. Cost: $69 6. USBFever’s Special Effects Lenses![]() If you can’t afford to splurge on Factron’s case-and-lenses system above, then USBFever offers some affordable alternatives. Its range of detachable lenses for mobile devices include fish eye, wide angle, macro and telescopic. The success of the results will no doubt vary, but there’s certainly some fun experimentation to be had. Cost: From $13 to $22 7. Griffin Clarifi![]() Designed for iPhone 3G and 3GS, Griffin’s Clarifi case boasts a built-in lens that claims to give your iPhone a boost in camera resolution. Macro and close-up shots are instantly finer in detail, while you can still slide the lens aside for normal photography. Cost: $34.99 8. Joby GorillaMobile for iPhone 4![]() Joby is now offering a product especially for the iPhone 4. The stand-alone bumper protects your phone, while the detachable, flexible tripod offers adaptable positioning. In addition to photography, the GorillaMobile can also be used as a desk stand, or even, suggests Joby, attached to a treadmill to watch your favorite show while working out. Cost: $39.95 9. ZoomIt SD Memory Card Connector![]() This clever dock connector accessory (and the free app) allows you to use SD memory cards with your iPhone. It lets you view, access and share all of your photos (and other files) from your SD cards on the go without the need to connect to your camera, Mac or PC. It’s slightly pricey, but a fab solution for anyone who favors the SD memory card format. Cost: $59.95 10. Glif![]() The soon-to-be-released Glif (enabled by Kickstarter) offers two functions: letting you mount your iPhone to a standard tripod and using a kickstand to prop your phone up at an angle. It’s a simple and elegant solution that’s seen some positive backing. You can pre-order yours now. Cost: $20 More iPhone Photography Resources from Mashable:

“Angry Birds” + Evil Pigs + Peace Treaty = Destruction [VIDEO] Posted: 21 Nov 2010 04:02 PM PST Have you ever wondered why the angry birds and evil pigs from Angry Birds can’t put aside their differences? A new YouTube video helps explain why. Angry Birds have taken the world by storm. It is the iPhone’s most popular game (no longer the top-grossing one) and hugely popular on Android. For those of you who haven’t played yet, the story focuses around the angry birds trying to reclaim their eggs from the evil pigs. In this short, two-and-a-half minute video (which is going viral as we speak), the angry birds finally sit down at the negotiating table with the evil pigs to end the struggle, “which has cost millions of innocent people their ability to concentrate in work.” However, things go wrong and not even the negotiator or the Angry Birds theme music can keep both sides from engaging in all-out war. The video was created by Erez Nehederet (Hebrew for “Wonderful Country”), a popular live sketch comedy show in Israel, as part of a promotional campaign for its upcoming season. Originally the video was created in Hebrew, but after a lot of U.S. interest, the video’s creators created the English version that you see here. Check out the video below and let us know where your allegiance stands in the war between the birds and the pigs. Warning: some of the language is potentially NSFW. You have been warned. New Campaign Seeks to Stop Flash Ads from Breaking the Web Posted: 21 Nov 2010 02:40 PM PST A new Internet campaign is seeking to stop Flash ads from breaking websites across the entire web by convincing ad networks to make changes to their Flash embeds codes. Flash Ads Are Broken, which launched yesterday, is focused on stopping Flash ads from creating nasty overlays and destroying site designs. The real issue though is that the campaign claims that site owners can’t actually fix the problem. It’s up to the ad networks (especially Google) to fix it on their side. “It took me a while to come up with a partial solution,” Flash Ads Are Broken campaign founder and Scribd Senior Product Developer James Yu told Mashable. “However, I figured out that when it’s in an iFrame, it’s impossible to fix. I was floored.” The campaign’s goal is simple: to get advertising networks to change the wmode parameter in their Flash embeds to “transparent” or “opaque.” In order to convince the ad networks to take action, Yu’s campaign is trying to draw more awareness and attention to pressure them to make the change. The campaign’s website even has a form where people can submit screenshots of offending Flash ads. “Web developers around the world have been dealing with issues like this with Flash,” Yu said. “I’m just trying to get the word out and bring awareness to this issue.” Yu goes on to say that a better solution would be for ad networks to adopt HTML5 instead of Flash for creating and delivering ads. “It’ll happen,” he stated. There is one major issue that stands in the way of Yu’s campaign though. Changing the wmode parameter in Flash embeds from “window” to “transparent” or “opaque” consumes more CPU. While the Flash Ads Are Broken campaign claims that consumers now have machines that are fast enough to avoid major issues, we’re not in agreement. While most developed countries will have machines that can handle the additional CPU load, most developing nations have older and slower PCs that would be adversely affected by the change. Even newer machines could exhibit strain if there are enough Flash objects on the page. We agree with Yu’s basic premise, though; Flash ads are indeed broken. They are often the slowest loading pieces of any webpage and having an unwanted ad overlay break a website is beyond frustrating. While the change Yu suggests might solve the problem in the short term, the long-term solution is either for Adobe to fix Flash or to convince ad networks to switch to HTML5 ads. HOW TO: Use Social Media to Enhance Your Event Posted: 21 Nov 2010 01:57 PM PST Meaghan Edelstein has gained national media attention through her blog, I Kicked Cancer’s Ass, which she started to document her battle with end stage cancer. She is an attorney, the founder of the non-profit organization Spirit Jump, and works for the Real Time Marketing Group. Using social media to enhance events might seem like a no-brainer, but many conferences — even social media ones — fail to take full advantage of the low-hanging fruit that social platforms offer, like ways for attendees to communicate with each other, broaden their participation, share information and have fun. If you're planning a conference, here are some ways to incorporate social networking into your big day. 1. Help Attendees Connect With Each Other![]() An important part of any conference experience is connecting with other attendees. Whether for the purpose of making business connections, making friends or building brand exposure, conference networking is key. SXSW, the annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival, recognizes the value of connecting – so much so that it is launching SXsocial for its upcoming event. SXSW CTO Scott Wilcox reveals the event’s new platform. “For 2011, SXSW is embarking on the creation of a new platform called SXsocial to help registrants network with each other by leveraging their social media relationships on networks and sites like Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, LinkedIn and others," Wilcox says. SXsocial will enhance how attendees already use social networking sites at conferences. "Registrants can build an extended profile including a photo, bio, links to their profiles on other networks, and tags of their interests both professional and personal. Users can search for other registrants based on this criteria and flag their favorites," Wilcox says. Helping attendees form relationships benefits both those buying tickets and the event organizers, SXSW has found. "Overall, SXSW aims to have a simple but smart way for registrants to connect with other registrants one-on-one before, during and after the event in a way that forms lasting relationships,” says Wilcox. 2. Broaden Participation![]() Social media platforms provide a unique, zero-cost marketing opportunity to expand conference participation beyond the confines of a venue. Twitter spokesperson Carolyn Penner says Twitter can get people who aren’t even at the event involved. "When an event happens offline, whether a conference, sporting event or concert, the conversation around the event is happening online in real time on Twitter. This offers a unique opportunity not only for attendees, who can interact with each other and see what other attendees are saying, but also — and more interestingly — for people who aren’t there. They can become part of the event without actually being there — with hashtags, photos, videos, and other content being shared on Twitter. And, the new version of Twitter makes it even easier to follow the conversations and see media via the details pane," Penner says. Facebook's live stream box can also be a powerful tool for broadening event participation. With more than 250 million people connecting on Facebook every day, it's the perfect space to reach out to millions who may not be in attendance. Live streaming via Facebook gives anyone who has access to the Internet the ability to get involved. The use of Facebook's live stream box during President Obama’s inauguration is a perfect example of how effective this feature can be, according to Randi Zuckerberg, Facebook’s head of consumer marketing. Working with CNN, Facebook built a live stream box that resulted in unique status updates by more than 2 million people and 26 million live streams on CNN. During Obama’s inauguration, CNN saw half a billion viral updates linking back to its site. You can also broaden conference participation on social networks with commenting on the conference's Facebook Page, answering questions posed by speakers, tagging pictures and encouraging attendees to vote by "liking" the best wall posts. 3. Encourage Attendees to Share Information![]() A great wealth of information can be garnered by using social media platforms during your conference. Attendees can leave and receive tips about particular speakers, share what they think about the venue, post pictures, find other attendees quickly and, of course, share the best places to eat. Organizers, in turn, can use these same social platforms to – almost immediately – address any concerns, enhance those things that are working and ultimately build an even better event. Foursquare is one of the hottest social tools for sharing tips. Foursquare spokesperson Eric Friedman explains the site’s many uses related to events. "Setting up a Foursquare venue at a conference, event or trade show, and encouraging people to check in, lets the organizer see which areas of the event are most popular and lets attendees find each other and meet easily. There are a myriad of reasons and opportunities available to event organizers, and we try to make the system as easy as possible. You can get great feedback from people who come by, track stats and see the breakdown of your visitors, as well as reach out to people. Individuals can see who else is around them, as well as what events are ‘hot’ and see comments." But don't limit yourself to just one social platform; each has unique abilities, and often attendees have a favorite network where they prefer to express themselves. 4. Provide Recreation![]() If you’ve ever attended a professional or academic conference, you’re probably well aware they can be made of long days and sometimes dry lectures. Use social media to create some recreational activities to increase the energy and ameliorate the tedium. Try creating games and contests that get attendees involved. For instance, you can encourage participation by employing social media platforms that use rewards. Event organizers must be creative in this endeavor, though. Monetary prizes aren't necessarily the most effective. Consider what might motivate the attendees of your particular conference. Face time with speakers or a celebrity at an event could be valuable to attendees. Try giving away what might be desirable collectables or memorabilia to your particular audience. For example, people attending a writers conference might value a signed book by a presenting author, and attendees of a social media conference love access to the newest technology. 5. Put It All Together![]() Blogworld takes advantage of a multitude of social networking platforms like, Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Plancast, Sched.org, USTREAM and Plixi to amplify the conference experience. According to founder and CEO Rock Calvert, the company’s use of social media prior to, during and after the the world's largest social media conference and trade show is "…light years ahead of other conferences." Prior to the conference, Calvert uses various social platforms to inform people about the event, accept speaker applications and make announcements. In addition, Blogworld allows attendees to socially pick sessions, as well as invite and tell people that they are attending. During Blogworld's three-day conference, social platforms help facilitate and encourage attendee participation. Facebook is used to create polls, allow for public comments and encourage suggestions from attendees on how to improve the event. Organizers also encourage attendees to micro blog, which gives readers the opportunity to experience the event from numerous vantage points. Calvert credits these tools with "keeping the Blogworld experience transparent." How does social media make Blogworld better? In 2009, Blogworld set a Guiness World Record for the distribution of the largest mass message through social media, with a #Beatcancer hashtag. The campaign also raised more than $70,000 for social good efforts. In addition, Calvert tells us, "Social media creates social attendee lists, starts conversations, encourages meet ups, [and] allows conference organizers to react to issues immediately…. Incorporating social into our conference simply makes the experience better." ConclusionWhether customizing your conference on the fly to meet the needs of your audience, creating media buzz or engaging participants, one things is clear: social media has revolutionized events. If done right, your conference or event can become a global experience. How have you used social media to enhance your own events? And, how have you used social media, as either an attendee or from home, to participate in an event? Share your thoughts in the comments below. More Social Media Resources From Mashable:

Is Rupert Murdoch’s iPad-Only Newspaper the Future of Journalism? [OP-ED] Posted: 21 Nov 2010 12:52 PM PST Apple and News Corp are reportedly set to launch The Daily, the first iPad-only news publication. Can Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs usher journalism into a new digital age? The joint “newspaper” will have no website and no print edition; the only way to get it will be to download The Daily via iPad application. Each new edition will cost $0.99 to download. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the publication will have, “a tabloid sensibility with a broadsheet intelligence.” It’s Apple’s involvement that makes this project interesting, though. The tech giant has reportedly been offering its engineering talent to help create a seamless delivery experience for the publication, which should launch sometime in early 2011. For his part, News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch has hired approximately 100 journalists to run the publication. They are preparing for the publication’s launch next year and are thought to be led by Jesse Angelo, the former managing editor of The New York Post (also a News Corp publication). Our bet is that you will see Rupert Murdoch and/or Jesse Angelo on stage with Steve Jobs at the launch of the next iPad early next year. But will it be a pivotal moment in journalism history? Murdoch Gets It![]() According to reports, Murdoch has believed that the iPad will be a “game changer” ever since he read studies that demonstrated people were more engaged with content on their tablet devices than either traditional newspaper or the web. He calculates that if he can just get a fraction of the eventual iPad market (one estimate: 5% of 40 million iPad owners by the end of 2011), then his digital publication will succeed. It’s a big and risky bet that could either fall flat on its face or cement Murdoch’s legacy as a visionary and kingpin of news. Murdoch’s financial commitment to The Daily makes it a project nobody can write off. With Angelo at the helm, the publication is going to have a fast-paced but fun feel. The publication will not just be a newspaper formatted for the tablet, though; it will incorporate a great deal of video content and utilize the iPad’s technology in ways that no newspaper or website currently accomplishes. Will people pay $0.99 for news that they can get for free on the web? I actually think so, especially if The Daily can deliver a top-notch video experience. Apple’s done a great job of making it easy to make in-app purchases, and all indicators suggest that it’ll be even easier to make these payments for subscriptions like Murdoch’s iPad-only newspaper. While I may not like some of Murdoch’s ideas, (see Murdoch: Take Your Google Ball and Go Home), I give credit where it’s due. Murdoch’s commitment to a digital future for journalism is commendable and forward-thinking. He realizes more than his competitors that the future of news isn’t in propping up print publications, but creating truly immersive digital experiences. He may very be creating the template that brings other newspapers into a profitable digital age. Let’s be clear, though: while The Daily could very well take off and become the must-have publication on the iPad, it will never be the only player on the block. People won’t stop reading blogs or newspaper websites in favor of the iPad. Instead, they’ll add The Daily to their many sources of news. Some days, they’ll make the $0.99 purchase, and on others they’ll be reading through the archives of Mashable or Perez Hilton. 2011 is going to be another interesting year for the rapidly changing world of journalism. 5 Magnificent Memes [Mashable Awards] Posted: 21 Nov 2010 11:54 AM PST As part of the ongoing Mashable Awards, we’re taking a closer look at each of the nomination categories. This is “Best Internet Meme,” supported by Dynadot. Be sure to nominate your favorites and join us for the Gala in Las Vegas!
Below you will find my personal favorites from 2010 as part of a look into one of our newest Mashable Awards categories, “Best Internet Meme.” Yes, there were a bevy of memes on the scene in 2010, and I’m sure every commenter has his/her own opinions as to what should make the cut. So read on, and then take to the comments and run and tell that or nominate your favorite. Sad Keanu![]() Sad Keanu hit this past summer courtesy of a glorious paparazzi photo and the folks over at Reddit. Strangely enough, it took Reeves until October to find out about his own memetastic existence. Thanks to still more amazing photos — and the skills of the Internet set — the meme continued to roll, from sandwiches to helmets to cupcakes. How can one possibly be sad whilst eating a cupcake? Here’s how: ![]() Vuvuzelas![]() You know what’s more annoying than the most annoying sound in the world? When said sound becomes a meme. When the World Cup kicked off last summer, so did the memification of the vuvuzela — a stadium horn blown by fans at soccer matches in South Africa. The horn found its way into Twitter accounts, iPhone [iTunes link] and Android apps, Facebook apps and parody protest videos. YouTube even added a vuvuzela button. While this meme waned as the weather has grew warmer — and the festivities drew to a close — we’re looking forward to a renaissance come next World Cup. This time, we’re packing ear plugs. HipstersGranted, I’m a bit biased on this one considering — full disclosure — I write a humor blog about hipsters, but there’s really no denying that this was the year that the plaid-clad ones became a certifiable meme. From the roots of blogs like Hipster Runoff and Look At This F**king Hipster sprung a whole genre of Internet culture devoted to poking fun at “the hipster.” See: Unhappy Hipsters, Hipster Puppies, Hipster Wife Hunting, If Superheroes Were Hipsters, Hipster Dating, and, of course, the corporate world’s attempt at getting in on the game: How Much Hipster Can You Fit in a Jazz? I would wager to say that this is the first counter culture (yeah, I know, that term is in contention) to go this intensely viral. It makes one wonder what would have happened had the Internet existed in the ’60s as it does today. Look At This F**king Hippie, anyone? Cee-lo Green’s “F**k” YouWhen this song hit, the Mashable team dubbed it the “unofficial song of the summer.” Now it’s become the unofficial cover song of the Internet set. With contributions from 50 Cent, Madam Butterfly (the female version), 8-bit, William Shatner and even Glee, “F**k You” has gone full-on meme. Why? I guess there’s a lot of angry people out there. Double RainbowMy final choice for meme of the year was a tough one — boiling down to a face-off between “Double Rainbow” and “Bed Intruder.” I guess it’s just the optimist in me, but, in the end, I chose rainbows. Hungrybear9562’s (a.k.a. Paul Vasquez) ode to rainbows hit at the beginning of July, capturing our hearts and imaginations with the beauty of a simple act of nature: The rainbow. Vasquez posted the video of himself "freaking out" about the rainbow in Yosemite, California back in January; it only had a few hits until comedian Jimmy Kimmel tweeted about the comedic merits of the now-famous clip. Fast forward to today, and there are now auto-tuned covers (see above), numerous parodies, a Windows commercial and even an iPhone app. Looks like old Hungry Bear has found his pot of gold. What's Your Pick?Which memes captured your heart this year? Let us know in the comments or nominate them for a Mashable Awards. iPad 3G With an Integrated SIM Card Coming Soon [REPORT] Posted: 21 Nov 2010 10:51 AM PST Apple has given up on releasing an iPhone with an integrated SIM card. However, the company might soon launch an iPad 3G with an integrated SIM card, The Sunday Telegraph reports. Currently, both the iPhone and the 3G version of the iPad use a micro SIM card, provided by mobile carriers such as AT&T in the U.S. and Vodafone and O2 in Europe. With an integrated SIM card in an iPhone, Apple could cut the mobile carriers from the sales process, as users could buy the device directly from Apple and choose a carrier later. However, according to “a senior source at a mobile operator”, this did not sit well with the carriers. “Apple has long been trying to build closer and closer relationships and cut out the operators. But this time they have been sent back to the drawing board with their tails between their legs”, the source said. On the other hand, it’s far easier for Apple to introduce the integrated SIM with the iPad 3G, since that device is not subsidized by mobile carriers. According to The Sunday Telegraph, Apple plans to launch the integrated-SIM variant of the iPad either before Christmas or in early 2011. For Google, Social Networking Is Just One Chapter of the Book Posted: 21 Nov 2010 05:47 AM PST With its valuations and the number of users going through the roof, Facebook is perceived by many as the company that might dethrone Google as the next Internet superpower. Google, however, doesn’t see Facebook as a direct threat, since social networking is just one part of Google’s overall strategy. “The digital world is exploding and it has so many chapters — it has cloud computing, it has mobile, it does have social, it has searches, it has so many elements. (…) Yes, absolutely it will be part of our strategy, yes it will be embedded in many of our products. But at the same time remember it’s one chapter of an entire book,” said Google’s chief financial officer Patrick Pichette to Australian public television on Sunday. While that may be true, with Facebook’s recent foray into e-mail, it’s getting obvious that Facebook is competing with Google on many fronts, not merely as a social network. The real question here is whether Facebook’s core product — social networking — is more powerful a foundation than Google’s core product — search. Pichette also weighed in on the state of mobile and Google’s great success with Android. “Now that everybody has a smartphone everybody searches, so these few hundred engineers (who developed Android) have accelerated (a market that) would have taken 10 years to develop into a few years,” he said. Pichette also repeated Eric Schmidt’s claim that 200,000 new android handsets are being activated every day. Finally, Pichette gave his thoughts on what drives Google as a company, delivering another quote that goes hand in hand with Google’s long-standing “don’t be evil” mantra. “The first driving principle of Google is in fact not money — the first driving principle of Google is understanding that the Internet is changing the world,” he said.
